Nokia announces N82
Nokia today made official their latest N-Series smart phone the Nokia N82. The N82 sports a 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens and integrated GPS functionality. Until the N82 the only other Nokia phone with a 5 megapixel camera was it's flagship N95. The N82 also supports various Nokia services including its N-Gage gaming platform, music store and Nokia Maps. Nokia has recently made an effort to move beyond handset development and begin offering services that often compete with similar services from carriers.

Google announces new mobile OS: Android
Google and a bevy of partners today announced details about the oft-rumored "Google Phone". Confirming previously leaked details Google will not be building its own cell phone like Apple and the iPhone, instead it will be developing an operating system, called Android, that runs on a variety of devices from many manufacturers. As part of today's announcement a group of heavy-weights in the mobile industry announced that they will partnering with Google in this endeavor, including handset manufacturers like Motorola. carriers like T-Mobile and thirty-one other companies. This partnership will be known as the Open Handset Alliance, which references the open nature of the software that will be developed. Google stated in its press release that the alliance's goals include "...fostering innovation on mobile devices and giving consumers a far better user experience...".

Verizon launches XV6800 Windows Mobile smart phone
Verizon Wireless today announced the availability of the XV6800 Windows Mobile Professional smart phone. The XV6800 is the successor to the XV6700 and sports a slide out QWERTY keyboard, 2.8 inch touch screen, Wi-Fi and support for Verizon's high speed EVDO data network. The XV6800 is manufactured my Hight Tech Computer (HTC), which produces the majority of Windows Mobile devices worldwide. The HTC Mogul on the Sprint network is the same underlying model as the XV6800. The XV6800 is available from Verizon's website today and will be available in stores on on December 5th. The phone will sell for $449.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate and a 2-year contract agreement.

iPhone rapidly gains market share in North America
Technology research firm Canalys, in a study on smart phone trends, found that Apple's iPhone has rapidly gained market share in North America. In an analysis of the global smart phone market done for Symbian Canalys found that in the third quarter of this year the iPhone had gained 27% market share in North America. Only RIM's BlackBerry devices performed better with the iPhone outpacing both Windows Mobile and Symbian devices in North America.

Cell phone industry gathers in Barcelona
February 11, 2008 - This week in Barcelona the wireless devices industry has gathered for its biggest event of the year the Global World Congress. As expected manufacturers and other wireless industry players have made announcements and released handsets at a dizzying rate. The biggest story of the event so far may be Sony-Ericsson's move into the Windows Mobile space with the Xperia X1 handset. Microsoft also made news by announcing that they have purchased Danger Inc., responsible for the Sidekick line of smart phones popular with young people.

HTC announces Touch Pro
June 4, 2008 - HTC today announced the Touch Pro Windows Mobile smart phone. Running their latest version of the TouchFlo interface the Touch Pro is very similar to the previously announced HTC Touch Diamond with the addition of a slide out QWERTY keyboard. The Touch Pro also sports support for WCDMA data up to 7.2 Mbps, GPS, Wi-Fi and a 3.2 megapixel auto-focus camera. The Touch Pro will be available overseas later this summer and in the U.S. later in 2008.

iPhone 3G to be available July 11th
June 9, 2008 - Apple today announced that the new iteration of their iPhone will be available worldwide on July 11th. The new version of the iPhone is little changed except for the addition of high speed data via 3G (third generation) cellular networks and GPS. The new iPhone will also see a price drop with the 8GB version available for $199 and the 16GB version available for $299. Apple also touched on the expected software update for the iPhone, which will be available in early July and unveiled a new service called Mobile Me.

Android is here: T-Mobile G1 Introduction
T-Mobile introduced the first mobile device powered by Google's open source Android platform today. Recent rumors revealed many details of the handset, but information today confirmed that the G1 handset has a touchscreen and slide-out QWERTY keyboard. Missing from the handset is support for synchronization with your desktop computer or corporate Exchange servers, oversights that will likely put it at a disadvantage in the smart phone market. Nokia Announces N97 Touchscreen Device
Nokia announced a new device today, the N97, with some impressive specs that will give other touchscreen phones a run for their money. The N97 has a 3.5-inch touchscreen, 32GB of on-board memory with expandability to 48GB with a microSD card, a 5-megapixel camera with a Carl Zeiss lens, and a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. It is quad-band GSM device that will operate on 3G networks around the world, including AT&T's 3G network in the U.S. The N97 also has a GPS receiver, integrated compass, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR.

Palm Announces Pre Smartphone and webOS
We're still here at CES covering the biggest cell phone news and Palm made a major announcement today to introduce the Palm Pre, a touchscreen smartphone with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard featuring the new Palm webOS. The Pre weighs in at 3.9 inches tall, 2.3 inches wide, and a thickness of 0.67 inches, tipping the scales at 4.67 ounces. Its touchscreen measures 3.1 inches diagonally with 320 x 480 resolution, and is capable of sensing multiple touches at once. Rounding out the hardware is 8GB of memory, Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, an accelerometer, and both ambient light and proximity sensors.

Palm and Sprint Host Webcast on Palm Pre

RIM Announces BlackBerry with WiFi Calling
18th July 2007 - BlackBerry manufacturers Research In Motion (RIM) have just announced the latest addition to the BlackBerry family; the 8820, which includes support for 802.11G wireless networking. This WiFi connection isn't just about faster web browsing; it also supports UMA (Universal Mobile Access), which allows for calls to be made over WiFi connections, which can then be invisibly switched to the cellular network when the user goes out of range of the WiFi connection. The 8820 also includes a GPS receiver and a MicroSDHC port, which can support MicroSD cards up to 2GB in size, and MicroSDHC memory cards up to a capacity of 32GB. No pricing details were revealed, but RIM did say that AT&T would be offering the new BlackBerry later in the summer.

Verizon Announces new Chocolate
5th July 2007 - Verizon has just announced a new version of their popular Chocolate slider phone. The new Chocolate by LG is claimed to be slimmer; although only by two hundredths of an inch; at 0.67 inches thick, against the 0.69 inches of the previous mode that we reviewed here. It will also include a number of new features, including a redesigned navigation wheel and a vibrating touch keypad.

Skype application now available for the iPhone
Skype has released an application to offer their VOIP calling and messaging services on Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch. The app became available today in Apple's App Store and is free. Skype is a popular VOIP service that can be used on multiple platforms, offering low-cost calls, text messaging, and more.

FCC Approves iPhone
Today the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved Apple's eagerly awaited iPhone for use in the United States. FCC approval is required for cellular devices to be sold in the United States. The iPhone is expected to be available for purchase late in June. Apple requested 45 days of confidentiality for several documents submitted to the FCC, including the user manual and photographs of the device. Such requests for confidentiality are fairly common to protect trade secrets.

AT&T Launches Nokia N75
AT&T today made available the Nokia N75, a smart phone based on Symbian OS and built specifically for the North American market. The Nokia N75 is Nokia's first commercially available smart phone to support AT&T's 3G network. Nokia has been trying for some time to get its high-end smart phones onto US networks, but the N75 is the first one with a 3G radio to be picked up by a US carrier.

15.9 Million Symbian Smart Phones Shipped Last Quarter
Symbian today announced that 15.9 million handsets shipped in the first quarter of 2007 that run versions of its Symbian operating system. Symbian is the underlying operating system that is used with Nokia's Series 60 and Sony Ericsson's UIQ handsets. The 15.9 million handsets shipped last quarter represent 35.9% growth over the same quarter one year ago. Symbian gathered royalties worth $37.9 million. Symbian is owned by Nokia and Sony Ericsson, which are also its largest customers.

HTC Moves Ahead With Dopod Purchase
HTC Today announced that it has signed an acqusition agreement with Dopod of Taiwan, a longtime distributor of HTC's Windows Mobile products. HTC and Dopod have been in acquisition talks for an extended period. Today HTC's Board of Directors approved the purchase, which is still subject to shareholder approval. In conjunction with this announcement HTC announced that they will be using Dopod's extensive Asian distribution channels to begin shipping HTC branded phones in Asia.

Palm Announces Treo 755p
Palm today announced the latest iteration of its popular Treo line of smart phones. The Treo 755p is an update to the Treo 700p, a version of the Treo that runs Palm OS, as opposed to versions that run Windows Mobile. The 755p adopts a slightly revamped form factor that was introduced with the Treo 750 and 680 models late last year. The major differences from the Treo 700p is the removal of the external antenna, a shift form SD to Mini SD cards for storage and a slightly slimmed down profile. The 755p will be available on Sprint's CDMA network initially.

Gartner Releases Global PDA Report
Gartner Inc. today released a report outlining the global PDA market in the first quarter of 2007. According to the report growth in the market was driven by Windows Mobile devices, which grew by 64 percent and drove the 39.7 percent growth in the market overall. According to Todd Kort “Microsoft Windows Mobile licensees accounted for nearly 3.2 million PDA shipments in the first quarter of 2007, or more than 60 percent of all PDA shipments in the quarter,”. RIM was the leading manufacturer of PDA's, with 18.1 percent of the overall market.

18th June 2007 - Sprint has announced the replacement for their venerable PPC-6700; the Sprint Power Vision Smart Device Mogul by HTC. The new cell phone is smaller and thinner than the PPC-6700, and runs the new Windows Mobile 6 OS. It also includes the same style of slide-out QWERTY keyboard, a 2 megapixel camera and an EVDO radio that will be upgradeable to support the faster EVDO Rev A data connection in the near future.

SanDisk Unveils 4GB Card for Sony Ericsson Phones
March 27, 2007 – Data storage company SanDisk today announced a higher capacity Memory Stick Micro card that will work with Sony Ericsson mobile phones. Pricing hasn’t yet been determined, but the new 4GB card will be shipped to OEMs in May and to retailers later this year.
The new card, called the SanDisk M2, addresses the increasing trend for Mobile phones to becoming multimedia devices with the ability to store audio, video, and pictures. SanDisk is hoping to capitalize on this trend.

Motorola Replaces CFO, Shuffles Execs
23 March 07 – Cell phone manufacturer Motorola has replaced their Chief Financial Officer and is shuffling their other executives. The old CFO David Devonshire will be replaced by Thomas Meredith as of April 1 st, and a handful of other top executives are being moved around within the troubled company. Greg Brown is appointed as President and Chief Operating Officer of Motorola and will be specifically focusing on the cell phone handset side of the business, which has been facing sales below estimates and delays in launching new products.

Palm Sale Deal May be Announced Tomorow
March 20th 2007 - Rumors have been circulating for some time about PDA and cell phone manufacturer Palm being up for sale, and a number of potential bidders have been named, including Nokia and Motorola. And we may not need to wait to find out who the winner is: according to press reports in the industry blog Unstrung and others, the deal may be announced within the next day or so. It seems that the bankers who are advising them on the deal are trying to get the deal finalized before the 22 nd, when Palm announce their third quarter results. Companies typically try and work out deals before they announce results like this to avoid speculation in the stock market. We’ll bring you news on the final buyer for Palm when (or if) the deal happens.

Amp’d Gets The Q
Pre-paid network Amp’d has just announced that they are now offering the Motorola Q on their network. The Q (which we reviewed on Verizon here) will be personalized for their youth target audience with the addition of software to support downloadable music and video, social networking and access to original content. The Amp’d Q will also include access to 24 channels of live TV (from networks such as Adult Swim and Fox Sports) and 55 video on-demand channels. The company did not offer pricing or availability details, nor did they explain which plans the Q will be offered on; they offer both pre-paid and monthly plans.
