Apple negotiations with Chinese carriers on iPhone off to rocky start
Reports from several sources have indicated that attempts to bring Apple's iPhone to the Chinese market have encountered some obstacles. The biggest stumbling block seems to be Apple's insistence on receiving a portion of iPhone user's subscription fees. Apple has signed deals with several carriers worldwide that provide them with up to $18 per month per subscriber in income on top of any profit arising from the sale of the iPhone. Chinese carriers have been very reluctant to agree to such a revenue sharing deal, with one Chinese executive telling Reuters that: "[O]ur business model does not entail sharing revenue with terminal producers -- we don't share revenue. That's a Chinese rule,".

Chinese Network To Roll out 3G
China is going 3G. The Chinese government has just awarded the first license to build a 3G network in the country, where cell phone use is growing at a remarkable rate (there were 334 million cell phone users in china in 2004, according to infoplease). The first license was awarded to China Mobile, the state-sponsored cellular network, who willb e spending $5.2 billion to build and upgrade their existing network. More licenses expected to be awarded to other companies soon. But you won’t be able to take your US 3G phone and roam over there; the network will be built using the TD-SCDMA standard, which isn’t compatible with the CDMA or GSM standard used in the USA.
