T-Mobile Launches Hotspot@Home WiFi And Cell Service

27th June 2007 - T-Mobile has just launched a new service that combines cellular calling with WiFi. Their T-Mobile@Home service offers unlimited calling from home over a DSL or Cable Internet connection, or from any T-Mobile hotspot for a monthly fee. When the user is out of WiFi range, the calls are carried on the T-Mobile wireless network. The new service requires a cell phone that supports calling over WiFi, but T-Mobile are offering two new phones that support it: the $49.99 Samsung t409 and Nokia 6086.

Cell phone industry gathers in Barcelona

February 11, 2008 - This week in Barcelona the wireless devices industry has gathered for its biggest event of the year the Global World Congress. As expected manufacturers and other wireless industry players have made announcements and released handsets at a dizzying rate. The biggest story of the event so far may be Sony-Ericsson's move into the Windows Mobile space with the Xperia X1 handset. Microsoft also made news by announcing that they have purchased Danger Inc., responsible for the Sidekick line of smart phones popular with young people.

Sprint to debut WiMAX network

December 13, 2007 - This week Sprint plans on taking its WiMAX networks live. The soft launch, which is limited to Sprint employees, will include Chicago and the Baltimore/Washington D.C. area. Sprint has doled out network-building responsibilities to its three major hardware vendors: Motorola built Chicago's network, Samsung handled the East coast, and Nokia Siemens is currently building a third network in Texas. While no hard dates have been set, Sprint is set on a full commercial launch for the second quarter of 2008. Sprint hopes to extend the network to 100 million people by the end of 2008. Following in the footsteps of fellow carriers, Sprint will keep this network "open", meaning any device will be able to access the network.

Google announces new mobile OS: Android

Google and a bevy of partners today announced details about the oft-rumored "Google Phone". Confirming previously leaked details Google will not be building its own cell phone like Apple and the iPhone, instead it will be developing an operating system, called Android, that runs on a variety of devices from many manufacturers. As part of today's announcement a group of heavy-weights in the mobile industry announced that they will partnering with Google in this endeavor, including handset manufacturers like Motorola. carriers like T-Mobile and thirty-one other companies. This partnership will be known as the Open Handset Alliance, which references the open nature of the software that will be developed. Google stated in its press release that the alliance's goals include "...fostering innovation on mobile devices and giving consumers a far better user experience...".

Nokia announces N82

Nokia today made official their latest N-Series smart phone the Nokia N82. The N82 sports a 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens and integrated GPS functionality. Until the N82 the only other Nokia phone with a 5 megapixel camera was it's flagship N95. The N82 also supports various Nokia services including its N-Gage gaming platform, music store and Nokia Maps. Nokia has recently made an effort to move beyond handset development and begin offering services that often compete with similar services from carriers.

Is Apple Planning An iPod Nano Style iPhone?

5th July 2007 - Looks like Apple aren't going to be resting on their laurels from the iPhone; a recently unearthed patent application from the company describes a way that they could combine an iPod-style clickwheel and a number dial. In theory, this patent (which was found by Unwired View could be leading up to an iPod Nano-style cell phone.

Google Local Search Now Available By Phone

8th April 2007 - Don’t get the Internet on your cell phone? You can still search Google with their experimental voice local search service. The new way to search Google’s database of local businesses is available by calling 1 800 GOOG 411 (1 800 466 4411), and it allows you to search for local businesses by name or category: you search for Pizza restaurants by saying “pizza”. The service can then connect you to the business free of charge, or send you the details of the service in a text message.

Samsung Announces 8GB Micro SD Card

Samsung today announced an 8GB Micro SD card. Micro SD is widely used in mobile devices. Micro SD is about one quarter the size of full sized SD cards, which are used in digital cameras and other consumer electronics. Micro SD and the slightly larger Mini SD were developed for smaller devices such as music capable mobile phones. Samsung expects that by 2010 8GB Micro SD cards "...will be the market mainstream in terms of units sold."

LG Announces Touchscreen Watch Phone

We're here at CES bringing you the latest cell phone-related news. LG announced today their Touch Watch Phone, model LG-GD910, that features 3G connectivity and a full touchscreen. It's 13.9mm thick and has a curved tempered glass face and metal casing.

FCC Approves iPhone

Today the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved Apple's eagerly awaited iPhone for use in the United States. FCC approval is required for cellular devices to be sold in the United States. The iPhone is expected to be available for purchase late in June. Apple requested 45 days of confidentiality for several documents submitted to the FCC, including the user manual and photographs of the device. Such requests for confidentiality are fairly common to protect trade secrets.

Pantech Unveils 9.9mm Thick Phone

21st June 2007 - Supermodels may be bulking up, but cell phones are continuing to slim down: Pantech has just announced a new cell phone that is just 9.9mm thick. The IM-S230 is a slider phone that’s a whole millimeter thinner than the Samsung Ultra Edition U600. But the list of features this phone offers isn’t lightweight; it includes a 2.2-inch display, camera and a DMB digital TV receiver. It’s also available in black and white, but this svelte phone is only available in Korea at the moment through the Sky network. Samsung Announces All In One High Capacity Memory Chip

Samsung today announced that it has developed a multi function chip for cell phones that combines the operating and storage memory that is used by many phones with 4GB of additional memory for storing multimedia. Phones with expansive built in memory have been limited in recent years, with most phones using a separate expansion slot that allows users to add additional memory. The new chip uses the standardized eMMC interface to address problems faced by manufacturers when attempting to build support for different types of flash memory into the same device. The new chip may allow manufacturers to save precious space in cellular phones where space is at a premium.

Sprint To Offer Full Length TV Episodes From ABC

Sprint today announced that in partnership with Disney-ABC they will be offering full length versions of several popular ABC shows over its video streaming service. The new offerings will be available starting with the season finales of shows such as Desperate Housewives, Grey's Anatomy and Lost. Episodes will be available on demand the day after they air.

Samsung Announces WiBro Devices

Samsung today announced three new devices for Korea that will run on the next generation WiBro network that is being built up around Seoul. WiBro allows for maximum data throughput of between 30 to 50 Mbps. The WiBro network being rolled out in Korea currently provides around 13Mbps of data throughput.

Pandora Personalized Radio Comes to Sprint

Sprint today announced that it will be bringing online streaming radio service Pandora to select handsets in its lineup. Pandora provides personalized online radio by matching songs that users say they like with similar music. Users can customize their personal radio station by adding additional sample songs and can rate songs they hear based on whether they like it or not. Pandora is one of the most popular internet radio stations with over 6.5 million users. The service will cost $2.99 per month for subscribers of Sprint's Power Vision data plans.

CTIA, Orlando, March 26, 2007 – Kyocera Wireless Corporation and PCTEL Incorporated have joined forces to create a voice call continuity (VCC) solution for dual-mode Wi-Fi/CDMA handsets. A prototype at the CTIA show in Orlando is demonstrating the device’s ability to move between CDMA and Wi-Fi wireless connections without interrupting the call.
