TeleNav Updates GPS Software

11th June 2007 - Telenav, Inc. has introduced a new version of their widely used TeleNav GPS Navigator software. Version 5.2 adds a number of new features, including the ability to send your location and direction to it by SMS message; a boon for anyone sitting in a restaurant waiting for their partner/hot date to turn up.

Motorola issues profit warning

12th July 2007 - Motorola has had another bad quarter, with profits in their cell phone division falling. The company announced recently that their overall sales had remained flat at $8.7 billion, down from the $9.4 billion that the company managed in the first quarter of 2007. They blamed much of this dip on poor sales of cell phones in Asia and Europe.

Verizon Offers YouTube Uploads From All Video Messaging Phones

25th July 2007 - Verizon has just added the ability for all of their users with MMS video capable phones to upload videos to the popular video sharing site YouTube. If a Verizon user adds their cell phone number to their YouTube account, they can now upload a video from their Verizon phone by simply shooting the video and sending it to 98823 (which spells YTUBE) as an MMS message.

Helio Offers Exchange Support (For a Price)

26th July 2007 - Microsoft Exchange users, rejoyce: the Helio Ocean is getting support for Microsoft's popular email server system. Helios just announced Mail for Microsoft Exchange service that allows users of their Ocean handset (which we reviewed here) to send and receive messages through Exchange servers, which are commonly used in large companies.

AT&T Launches Non-DRM Over The Air Music Store

31st July 2007 - AT&T has finally launched their over the air music store. Created with Emusic, the store allows users to buy 5 songs a moth for $7.49, which can be downloaded both to a cell phone and to a desktop music player. But unlike other cell phone music services, the files downlaoded from the AT&T store do not have Digital Rights Management (DRM) on them; they can be copied and played on any device that can play MP3 files. However, the store currently only allows over the air downloads with a limited number of phones, and doesn't work with the iPhone.

Nokia announces N82

Nokia today made official their latest N-Series smart phone the Nokia N82. The N82 sports a 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens and integrated GPS functionality. Until the N82 the only other Nokia phone with a 5 megapixel camera was it's flagship N95. The N82 also supports various Nokia services including its N-Gage gaming platform, music store and Nokia Maps. Nokia has recently made an effort to move beyond handset development and begin offering services that often compete with similar services from carriers.

Google announces new mobile OS: Android

Google and a bevy of partners today announced details about the oft-rumored "Google Phone". Confirming previously leaked details Google will not be building its own cell phone like Apple and the iPhone, instead it will be developing an operating system, called Android, that runs on a variety of devices from many manufacturers. As part of today's announcement a group of heavy-weights in the mobile industry announced that they will partnering with Google in this endeavor, including handset manufacturers like Motorola. carriers like T-Mobile and thirty-one other companies. This partnership will be known as the Open Handset Alliance, which references the open nature of the software that will be developed. Google stated in its press release that the alliance's goals include "...fostering innovation on mobile devices and giving consumers a far better user experience...".

Cell phone industry gathers in Barcelona

February 11, 2008 - This week in Barcelona the wireless devices industry has gathered for its biggest event of the year the Global World Congress. As expected manufacturers and other wireless industry players have made announcements and released handsets at a dizzying rate. The biggest story of the event so far may be Sony-Ericsson's move into the Windows Mobile space with the Xperia X1 handset. Microsoft also made news by announcing that they have purchased Danger Inc., responsible for the Sidekick line of smart phones popular with young people.

HTC announces Touch Pro

June 4, 2008 - HTC today announced the Touch Pro Windows Mobile smart phone. Running their latest version of the TouchFlo interface the Touch Pro is very similar to the previously announced HTC Touch Diamond with the addition of a slide out QWERTY keyboard. The Touch Pro also sports support for WCDMA data up to 7.2 Mbps, GPS, Wi-Fi and a 3.2 megapixel auto-focus camera. The Touch Pro will be available overseas later this summer and in the U.S. later in 2008.

Samsung Announces 8GB Micro SD Card

Samsung today announced an 8GB Micro SD card. Micro SD is widely used in mobile devices. Micro SD is about one quarter the size of full sized SD cards, which are used in digital cameras and other consumer electronics. Micro SD and the slightly larger Mini SD were developed for smaller devices such as music capable mobile phones. Samsung expects that by 2010 8GB Micro SD cards "...will be the market mainstream in terms of units sold."

Helio Ocean Available

Today Helio announced that it's new high end multimedia phone the Helio Ocean is available for sale. The Ocean will be available for $295 at Helio Stores or by phone at 888-88-HELIO. The Helio Ocean has a dual slider design with a full QWERTY keyboard, 3G data via EVDO and integrated GPS capabilities. The Helio Ocean will compete with high end smart phones such as the recently released Treo 755p.

Qualcomm Denied Stay On 3G Chip Import Ban

June 22nd 2007- Cell phone chip manufacturer Qualcomm has been denied a stay on the import ban on phones containing their 3G chips. The company had been hoping that a federal appeals court would issues a stay in the case that would have allowed cell phone companies to continue importing phones that use Qualcomm’s chips, but the court did not. This means that the ban on importing new cell phones that use the chips will continue.

Motorola Launches New Razr

Motorola today launched the Razr v2, the latest iteration of its popular Razr lineup of phones. The new version sports an updated Linux/Java operating system, 2 megapixel camera and an innovative touch sensitive exterior screen that simulates the feeling of real button presses. Motorola has seen a steady decline in its profits and market share. Despite selling 98 million Razr phones Motorola has been hurt by the rapidly decreasing average sale price of these phones.

Verizon Launches Blackberry 8830 With World Roaming

Verizon Wireless today announced in a press release that they will be carrying the Blackberry 8830, which will use both Verizon's CDMA technology and international GSM bands for world roaming. The support for GSM networks will be limited to the 900/1800 bands, which means the phone won't work on domestic GSM networks like Cingular or T-Mobile. These bands are used widely in other parts of the world and will allow users of the 8830 to use their phone for both phone calls and email when traveling in over 150 supported countries.

Use the Blackberry Interface in Windows Mobile

RIM is planning to extend the interface for its popular Blackberry devices to the Windows Mobile device platform by using virtualization technology. Running as a separate application the Virtual Blackberry software will allow users to access all Blackberry services and applications including integration with RIM's push email solution. RIM expects to ship the software later this year on Windows Mobile 6 devices.

Gartner Releases Global PDA Report

Gartner Inc. today released a report outlining the global PDA market in the first quarter of 2007. According to the report growth in the market was driven by Windows Mobile devices, which grew by 64 percent and drove the 39.7 percent growth in the market overall. According to Todd Kort “Microsoft Windows Mobile licensees accounted for nearly 3.2 million PDA shipments in the first quarter of 2007, or more than 60 percent of all PDA shipments in the quarter,”. RIM was the leading manufacturer of PDA's, with 18.1 percent of the overall market.

Nokia Announces 6120 classic S60 Phone

Nokia today announced that they will be shipping the 6120 classic. The 6120 classic is a mid-range Series 60 smart phone that features a 2 megapixel camera and support for high speed data via HSDPA. As a Series 60 smart phone the 6120 also includes support for synchronization with your computer, multimedia features and the ability to install third party programs that run natively on the device.

Research In Motion Announces Revenue for 2007

Yesterday Research In Motion (RIM), manufacturers of Blackberry devices, released a press release announcing their latest quarterly and annual results. Revenue for the fourth quarter of 2007 was $930.4 million, up 66% from the same quarter last year. Annual revenue was $3.0 billion, 47% above the previous year. Net income for the quarter was $.99 per share, just meeting analyst expectations.

Samsung Announces WiBro Devices

Samsung today announced three new devices for Korea that will run on the next generation WiBro network that is being built up around Seoul. WiBro allows for maximum data throughput of between 30 to 50 Mbps. The WiBro network being rolled out in Korea currently provides around 13Mbps of data throughput.

AT&T Launches Nokia N75

AT&T today made available the Nokia N75, a smart phone based on Symbian OS and built specifically for the North American market. The Nokia N75 is Nokia's first commercially available smart phone to support AT&T's 3G network. Nokia has been trying for some time to get its high-end smart phones onto US networks, but the N75 is the first one with a 3G radio to be picked up by a US carrier.

FCC Approves iPhone

Today the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved Apple's eagerly awaited iPhone for use in the United States. FCC approval is required for cellular devices to be sold in the United States. The iPhone is expected to be available for purchase late in June. Apple requested 45 days of confidentiality for several documents submitted to the FCC, including the user manual and photographs of the device. Such requests for confidentiality are fairly common to protect trade secrets.

Skype application now available for the iPhone

Skype has released an application to offer their VOIP calling and messaging services on Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch. The app became available today in Apple's App Store and is free. Skype is a popular VOIP service that can be used on multiple platforms, offering low-cost calls, text messaging, and more.
