AT&T Launches American Idol Videos and Tones

March 15, 2007 – For American Idol fans that can’t get enough of the reality show, AT&T is now launching Live Idol Videos and Live Idol Tones for their mobile phones. The videos and ring and answer tones will feature the 12 contestants of American Idol to be used with a 3G phone at $19.99 for unlimited video access and $2.49 per ringtone and $1.99 per answer tone.

Alltel Customers Can Get Answers

March 1, 2007 – For users who need movies times for a date, business professionals in need of flight information, or trivia contestants at the bar, Alltel Wireless now offers AskMeNow, a service that answers questions via text messaging. Users can access AskMeNow on smart phones for the monthly rate of $3.99 for smart phones or, for non-smart phones, $1.99 per month or 25 cents per question.

Cell Phone Networks are Improving, Claims Report

March 15, 2007 – Problems with cell phone networks are falling, with Verizon Wireless leading the pack, according to a J.D. power and Associates report released today. Over recent years, reported wireless call problems have reached an all-time low due to the rollout of the next wave of 3G networks, stated the report.

Verizon Launches V-Cast Mobile TV

March 8, 2007 – Verizon launched V-Cast Mobile TV this month, claiming to be the first major carrier to feature full-length broadband quality TV. The new service comes with eight channel options, including sports, news, weather, and entertainment through their mobile devices. Users can access Verizon V-Cast Mobile TV for a rate of $13 to $25 a month.

Harris: Consumers Wouldn’t Mind Mobile Ads

March 15 2007 - More than one-third of adults using cell phones would accept advertisements on their mobile devices, according to a study released today by market research firm Harris Interactive. In a survey of 903 persons, the report claims that 344 of the respondents said they were at least somewhat interested in receiving advertisements via their mobile devices.

Arizona Senate Kills Cell Phone Bill of Rights

March 15, 2007 – Arizona State Senate yesterday rejected a cell phone rights bill that would have allowed users to withdraw from their carrier plans due to unsatisfactory service. In a 16-11 vote, the Senate voted to deny Bill SB1241 because of undetermined consequences, according to the Associated Press.

New Prepaid Phone Service for Tweens

March 22nd 2007Kajeet is a new pre-paid cell phone service aimed a tweens (kids aged 8-12, between being kids and teenagers). The new service runs on the Sprint network and claims to offer a no long-term contract, no roaming and no termination fee experience. Also included are games and a number of unique features that allow parents to control how their tweens use the phone, including a time manager (which can determine when the phone can be used), a wallet manager (which lets parents determine who pays for calls and text messages) and a web-based contact manager. Four phones are available for Kajeet: the $49.95 LG LX150 flip phone, the $69 Nokia 6165i flip phone, the $69.99 LG 225 and the small and sleek $99.99 Sanyo Katana. The calling rates start at 10 cents a minute, 5 cents for text messages, and there’s a 35 cents a day access fee. The phones can be purchased online or through Best Buy stores.

Amp’d Gets The Q

Pre-paid network Amp’d has just announced that they are now offering the Motorola Q on their network. The Q (which we reviewed on Verizon here) will be personalized for their youth target audience with the addition of software to support downloadable music and video, social networking and access to original content. The Amp’d Q will also include access to 24 channels of live TV (from networks such as Adult Swim and Fox Sports)  and 55 video on-demand channels. The company did not offer pricing or availability details, nor did they explain which plans the Q will be offered on; they offer both pre-paid and monthly plans.

Helio Takes a Dip in The Ocean

26th March 2007 – The alternative carrier Helio has just announced the spring availability of the Ocean, a dual-slider handset produced by Pantech. Helio and Earthlink founder Sky Dayton makes the ambitious claim that “With Ocean, Helio has changed the shape of 3G with a new kind of device - the dual slide - a design that doesn't compromise on voice, text, IM, email, surfing, and every other way you want to stay connected." Amp’d Close to 200,000 Subscribers

10th April 2007 – The mobile network Amp’d has announced that they have close to 200,000 subscribers, 84,000 of which signed up in the first quarter of 2007. The network (which recently added the Motorola Q to their roster of phones) also claims that their users are doing much more than making phone calls; figures released by the company claim that their users have downloaded more than four million videos and songs in the first quarter.

Sidekick iD To Be Released April 25th

13th April 2007- T-Mobile today announced the Sidekick iD, the latest version of their popular Sidekick hybrid cell phone/data devices. The new Sidekick iD will be cheaper than the existing Sidekick 3 ($99 with a two-year contract, against $199 for the Sidekick 3) and is smaller and lighter.  It’s also lighter on features; the Sidekick iD has no Bluetooth and no camera.

Verizon Wireless yesterday announced that it will be joining the growing number of wireless operators to offer unlimited text messaging packages. Verizon's new offerings include individual plans starting at $59.99 and family plans starting at $99.99 that include unlimited messaging for all lines.

AT&T Launches Nokia N75

AT&T today made available the Nokia N75, a smart phone based on Symbian OS and built specifically for the North American market. The Nokia N75 is Nokia's first commercially available smart phone to support AT&T's 3G network. Nokia has been trying for some time to get its high-end smart phones onto US networks, but the N75 is the first one with a 3G radio to be picked up by a US carrier.

Alltel Close to Sale

Sources reported today that two equity firms are close to purchasing Alltel, the fifth largest wireless carrier in the United States. Alltel stated in an earnings conference call in February that the company was exploring strategic options. Analysts estimate that Alltel's sale price will be between $25 and $30 billion dollars.

Sprint To Offer Full Length TV Episodes From ABC

Sprint today announced that in partnership with Disney-ABC they will be offering full length versions of several popular ABC shows over its video streaming service. The new offerings will be available starting with the season finales of shows such as Desperate Housewives, Grey's Anatomy and Lost. Episodes will be available on demand the day after they air.

Sprint Offers Unlimited Voice & Data In More Markets

16th May 2007 – Sprint is widening the reach of their trial unlimited voice and data plan. The $119.99 a month all-you-can-eat plan for voice, text and data had been offered in the San Francisco Bay Area as a trail for the last few months, but they are now offering this to customers in the Minneapolis- St Paul, Philadelphia and Tampa, Florida areas.

Alltell Sold For $24 Billion

May 21st 2007 – The wireless network Alltel has been bought out by two private equity firms in a deal valued at $24.8 billion dollars.

The deal involves the two firms (TPG Capital and GS Capital Partners) paying $71.50 for each share of the company, which had a price of around $65.35 on Friday. Alltell have been aggressively marketing their services in a number of markets, with their main selling point being their MyCircle plan, which allows unlimited calling to 10 numbers on any wired or wireless network.

22 May 2007- T-Mobile has just announced the T-Mobile Wing, a Windows Mobile 6 handset with a full QWERTY keyboard that slides out from underneath the 2.8-inch, 240 x 320 pixel screen. Priced at $299 (with a two-year contract), the new handset is available today.

Pandora Personalized Radio Comes to Sprint

Sprint today announced that it will be bringing online streaming radio service Pandora to select handsets in its lineup. Pandora provides personalized online radio by matching songs that users say they like with similar music. Users can customize their personal radio station by adding additional sample songs and can rate songs they hear based on whether they like it or not. Pandora is one of the most popular internet radio stations with over 6.5 million users. The service will cost $2.99 per month for subscribers of Sprint's Power Vision data plans.

Amp’d Files For Bankruptcy

The cellular network Amp’d has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The motion for bankruptcy was filed late on Friday with the bankruptcy court in Delaware. According to the bankruptcy documents found by the web site MoCoNews, the company owes over 100 million dollars to various companies, including Verizon and Motorola. But the Amp’d is not done for; this type of bankruptcy allows for a company to rework their debts and continue operating.

AT&T Adds Data & Night Minutes to Pre-Paid Phone Plans

6th June 2007 - Pre-paid phone plans are generally pretty simple; you pay your money, you get a certain number of minutes per month. You don’t get access to extras like Internet access or off-peak calling. But AT&T is changing the rules: they have just announced a new set of pay as you go plans under their GoPhone brand that include free night and weekend calls, plus data access.

Ampd Gets Reprieve

22nd June 2007 - Amp'd users can breathe again; their phones aren't going to be cut off. Verizon (who provide the network that carries Ampd's  calls) had threatened to disconnect the network after Amp'd failed to pay $33 million they owed Verizon, but the two companies have now reached an agreement that will keep the network running for the near future.

Verizon Announces new Chocolate

5th July 2007 - Verizon has just announced a new version of their popular Chocolate slider phone. The new Chocolate by LG is claimed to be slimmer; although only by two hundredths of an inch; at 0.67 inches thick, against the 0.69 inches of the previous mode that we reviewed here. It will also include a number of new features, including a redesigned navigation wheel and a vibrating touch keypad.

Sprint Terminates Problem Users, Faces Complaints

12th July 2007 - Sprint has terminated the accounts of over a thousand customers that it claims were making excessive use of their customer service lines, but some of the users are fighting back. The company sent a letter to between 1000 and 1200 customers informing them that their service was being terminated as of the 30th of July because of the excessive calling, but many users are claiming that they have been unfairly penalized.

Ampd Users May Be Disconnected

19th July 2007 - Verizon is threatening to disconnect the bankrupt reseller Amp'd, a set of newly released court documents claim. The documents (which are reported by AP here) claim that Amp'd has been burning through cash since it declared bankruptcy, and that there is no way it will be able to pay Verizon what it owes. Verizon claims that the Amp'd will have just $9,000 of cash left on monday. And now Verizon wants to disconnect the company, leaving their subscribers without service.

Ampd To Shut Down And Sell Off Assets

22nd July 2007 - The end is in sight for Amp'd; following their bankruptcy and Verizon's attempt to cut off their users, the company is shutting down and selling what's left. What this means for Amp'd customers is that the service will probably shut down as of midnight tuesday, leaving both subscribers and prepaid users with dead air.

Apple shares fall on AT&T 2nd quarter results

AT&T today announced their 2nd quarter results, including the information that 146,000 iPhones were activated in the quarter. Only one and a half days of iPhone sales would be included in these results, however many analysts had speculated that several hundred thousand iPhones were sold during the opening weekend. These activation numbers from AT&T point to sales at the low end of analyst expectations. Apple stock is down today on the news, posting a low of $136.55 after closing at $143.70 last night.

Korean SK Telecom Denies Sprint Buyout Rumors

26th July 2007 - Press reports that Korean telecoms company SK Telecom may buy US network Sprint have been circulating for a while, but it seems that there is no real substance to these at present. In their second quarter earnings call this morning, SK Telecoms CFO Sung Min Ha downplayed the rumors, saying that "during the course of our work, we do receive many different investment proposals and this (Sprint Nextel) was one of those. But as we have already disclosed, we haven’t pursued the proposal."

Ampd Still Hanging On; Prexar Buys Access to Customers

2nd August 2007 - The death throes of the MVNO Amp'd aren't over yet: two days after the company was supposed to finally shut down, the service is still running, thanks to a last minute agreement with another MVNO called Prexar. They have bought the right to market to the remaining customers of Amp'd, and are trying to persuade post-paid users to switch over to their service. Under the terms of the bankruptcy agreement, this gives users a couple more days of grace, with the new deadline for disconnection now set at 12:01 PM EST on the 2nd of August.

Nokia To support New Microsoft Copy Protection System

6th August 2007 – Nokia has announced that they will be supporting Microsoft's PlayReady digital rights management (DRM) system in future handsets that use their Series 60 and 40 platforms. This support should mean that Nokia handsets will be able to play copy protected music and video purchased from online stores that use the forthcoming content protection system.

Apple Sold 270,000 iPhones On Launch Weekend

25th July 2007 - Apple has just released their financial results from the second quarter of 2007, which includes the iPhone launch on the 29th. And they claim that they sold 270,000 iPhones from 6pm friday (when the phone was launched) to midnight on sunday, when their second financial quarter ended, with 146,000 of these being activated in the same period.

IPhone Waiting Lists Building, But No Pre-Orders

25th May 2007 – AT&T has said that there won’t be any pre-orders for the iPhone, but you can start to get in line now if you want. The marketing research company The Channel Checkers claims that they have found that many AT&T stores are creating their own waiting lists for Apple’, with some stores having lists of thousands of people already. In their blog post on their research into the iPhone, they claimed that “64% of stores reporting a waiting list (We called 36 stores for this survey). The remaining 36% said sales were on a “first come first serve” basis”.

FCC asked to ensure that wireless carriers cannot bar SMS traffic

A consortium of public interest groups have asked the FCC to keep cellular carriers from blocking SMS traffic. Citing recent examples like Verizon's decision to block SMS messages from NARAL Pro-choice America and the decision by several carriers to refuse VOIP service Rebtel. Many groups now use subscription SMS services to send updates and information to wireless subscribers. Carriers are barred from discriminating against voice and email traffic, but not SMS traffic.

Verizon purchases Alltel

June 5, 2008 - Verizon Wireless today announced that they will be buying Alltel for $5.9 billion. The deal includes Verizon picking up $22.2 billion of Alltel's debt, for a total cost of $28.1 billion. Alltel currently serves 13 million customers. Combined with Verizon's customer base the transaction will create the largest carrier the United States, moving Verizon past the current leader AT&T.
