Apple Sells Half A Million iPhones
2nd July 2007 - Ask Steve Jobs how his weekend was, and he'll probably have a big grin on is face. According to analysts, Apple and AT&T sold over half a million iPhones over the weekend. Apple and AT&T themselves have not released any figures, but GEne Munster at Piper Jaffray is estimating that 500,000 iPhones were sold by close of business on Sunday, and Trip Chowdray of Global Equities Research claimed sales of 525,000. Although the real sales figures are known only to AT&T and Apple, it seems that Apple definitely has a hit on its hands.
However, it doesn't seem to be a sell out; Apple's own iPhone locator; was claiming on Sunday night that many stores still had them in stock, and our local store in Cambridge, MA happily confirmed on monday morning that they had both 4GB and 8GB models in stock, although they declined to comment on if they sold out over the weekend. Engadget reported that Californians may have a problem, though; they found that 34 of the 36 stores in the state were showing the iPhone being out of stock. But Apple is regularly supplying stores with new units overnight, so it seems unlikely that we'll see the supply running completely dry.
