Skype has released an application to offer their VOIP calling and messaging services on Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch. The app became available today in Apple's App Store and is free. Skype is a popular VOIP service that can be used on multiple platforms, offering low-cost calls, text messaging, and more.

Palm Pre Available 6th June
19th May 2009 - Sprint announce today that the Palm Pre will be available for purchase on the 6th of June, priced at $199.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate with a 2-year contract on Sprint's Everything Data plan from Sprint, Best Buy, Radio Shack and select Walmart stores. Also available on the 6th is the Touchstone, a $69.99 inductive charging device that recharges the Pre without wires.

Apple Announces new iPhone 3G S, priced at $199 for 16GB, $299 for 32GB
8th June 09 - Apple has announced the next generation of the iPhone; the iPhone 3G S. Announced at the 2009 developer's conference, the new iPhone will include extended battery life, and includes a faster processor than previous models. It will also include support for 7.2Mbps HSDPA and has a 3 megapixel camera that include autofocus and which can capture video. The new iPhone 3GS will cost $199 for the 16Gb version, and $299 for the 32Gb model The existing iPhone 3G will continue to be available, but at the reduced price of $99. The iPhone 3GS will be released on June 19th in the US and several other countries.

Palm and Sprint Host Webcast on Palm Pre

Palm Announces Pre Smartphone and webOS
We're still here at CES covering the biggest cell phone news and Palm made a major announcement today to introduce the Palm Pre, a touchscreen smartphone with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard featuring the new Palm webOS. The Pre weighs in at 3.9 inches tall, 2.3 inches wide, and a thickness of 0.67 inches, tipping the scales at 4.67 ounces. Its touchscreen measures 3.1 inches diagonally with 320 x 480 resolution, and is capable of sensing multiple touches at once. Rounding out the hardware is 8GB of memory, Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, an accelerometer, and both ambient light and proximity sensors.

Samsung Announces 8-Megapixel Memoir for T-Mobile
15th Feb 08 - Samsung has announced the forthcoming release of the Memoir, a touch screen cell phone with an 8-megapixel camera. The Memoir also includes GPS, an on-screen QWERTY keyboard and haptic feedback, and will be available through T-Mobile on Feb 25th. No price has yet been revealed.

Nokia Announces First Touchscreen Music Phone
Nokia announced its first touchscreen music phone today, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. Sony Ericsson Announces 12-megapixel Cell Phone For 2009 Launch

Android is here: T-Mobile G1 Introduction
T-Mobile introduced the first mobile device powered by Google's open source Android platform today. Recent rumors revealed many details of the handset, but information today confirmed that the G1 handset has a touchscreen and slide-out QWERTY keyboard. Missing from the handset is support for synchronization with your desktop computer or corporate Exchange servers, oversights that will likely put it at a disadvantage in the smart phone market. Apple Recalls 3G iPhone Power Adapters
Apple has issued an immediate recall on the power adapter that was supplied with the iPhone 3G after it emerged that the metal prongs may break off in the socket, exposing the user to a possible electrical shock. They are recommending that all users stop using the adapter, and will be making a replacement available soon.

iPhone 3G to be available July 11th
June 9, 2008 - Apple today announced that the new iteration of their iPhone will be available worldwide on July 11th. The new version of the iPhone is little changed except for the addition of high speed data via 3G (third generation) cellular networks and GPS. The new iPhone will also see a price drop with the 8GB version available for $199 and the 16GB version available for $299. Apple also touched on the expected software update for the iPhone, which will be available in early July and unveiled a new service called Mobile Me.

Verizon purchases Alltel
June 5, 2008 - Verizon Wireless today announced that they will be buying Alltel for $5.9 billion. The deal includes Verizon picking up $22.2 billion of Alltel's debt, for a total cost of $28.1 billion. Alltel currently serves 13 million customers. Combined with Verizon's customer base the transaction will create the largest carrier the United States, moving Verizon past the current leader AT&T.

HTC announces Touch Pro
June 4, 2008 - HTC today announced the Touch Pro Windows Mobile smart phone. Running their latest version of the TouchFlo interface the Touch Pro is very similar to the previously announced HTC Touch Diamond with the addition of a slide out QWERTY keyboard. The Touch Pro also sports support for WCDMA data up to 7.2 Mbps, GPS, Wi-Fi and a 3.2 megapixel auto-focus camera. The Touch Pro will be available overseas later this summer and in the U.S. later in 2008.

Sprint posts a loss in first quarter of 2008
May 12, 2008 - Sprint today announced that they posted a loss of $253 million for the first quarter of 2008. Revenues were down 9% compared to the same quarter last year at $8 billion. Sprint blamed the losses on a lower average revenue per customer. Sprint also stated that they lost 800,000 customers compared to the same quarter last year.

RIM Announces BlackBerry Bold
RIM today announced the BlackBerry Bold, the latest in their line of email focused smart phones. The BlackBerry Bold is RIM's first device to support AT&T's 3G network as well as international 3G networks, making it a global high speed device. The Bold's other major upgrades include a 480 x 320 pixel display, an upgraded web browser and improved multimedia functionality. The device also features a two megapixel camera, 1GB of built-in storage with support for Micro SDHC cards, a full QWERTY keyboard and GPS. AT&T has announced that they will be the exclusive U.S. carrier for the BlackBerry Bold when it is launched later this year.

Touch Diamond from HTC poised to compete with iPhone
HTC today announced their latest touch screen device at an event in London. The Touch Diamond is the successor to HTC's popular HTC Touch (review) device. Running Windows Mobile 6.1 with the latest version of HTC's TouchFlo interface, the Touch Diamond is supposed to make interacting with Windows Mobile with just your finger a more enjoyable experience. The Touch Diamond sports new styling as well as support for 3G connectivity and an upgraded 3.2 megapixel camera. The Touch Diamond is poised to compete with Apples upcoming 3G version of the iPhone (review).

T-Mobile launches 3G network
T-Mobile today announced that their long awaited 3G network was launched in New York City today. T-Mobile was the last major U.S. carrier to launch a 3G network, which uses the same UMTS/HSPA technology that is used by AT&T and other GSM carriers world-wide. Third generation networks such as this allow carriers to provide much higher data speeds, with current UMTS/HSPA networks able to achieve speeds up to 7.2 Mbps. It is not clear at this time what speeds T-Mobile's network will achieve. T-Mobile has indicated that they expect to roll out their new network across metropolitan areas throughout the country for the rest of the year.

Apple sold 1.7 million iPhones last quarter
Apple today released their quarterly results and indicated that they sold 1,703,000 iPhones (review) in the quarter. Total revenue for the quarter was $7.51 billion with profits of $1.05 billion. Apple mentioned excitement around the iPhone SDK in its conference call, which is expected to be available in June of this year. Apple has indicated that they expect to sell a total of 10 million iPhones in 2008.

Apple announces SDK and Exchange support for iPhone
March 6, 2008 - Apple today announced several new updates for the iPhone (read review) including support for Micorsoft's Exchange Server (blog post) and details about the software development kit (SDK) that will allow developers to create native applications for both the iPhone and the iPod Touch (blog post). Exchange integration and support for the new third party applications will come in a 2.0 update to the iPhone's software in late June. Developers will be able to download a beta version of the SDK today.

Qualcomm's patent claims ruled invalid
March 3, 2008 -- Today, another major ruling has been made in the ongoing Qualcomm/Nokia patent lawsuit. A United Kingdom High Court judge has ruled that none of Qualcomm's GSM patent claims are valid. This means Nokia will not have to pay Qualcomm for their use.
