Vodaphone lineup leak
Added on 2008-01-06 14:05:00
by Mark Brezinski
The astute guys at Boy Genius eagle-eyed a few new handsets Vodaphone name-dropped in a presentation. Fortunately for us and you, noble reader, they posted the slides. There was a mystery handset (pictured right) as well as two handsets each from Nokia, BlackBerry, HP, and Palm.
The Nokia phones were the E66 (Dora), and E71 (Liam). Logic dictates the E66 is a sequel to the E65. This means it's likely to have great enterprise software, VOIP and SIP capabilities (so you can forward desk calls to your VOIP), and, more than likely, Nokia's garbage 2-Megapixel camera.
The two BlackBerry devices were the Pearl 8110 and a mysterious 8000 series device that was previously fabled as a flagship 9000 series device.
HP's handsets are the Silver and Oak. Both will run Windows Mobile and have GPS and wi-fi.
Palm's devices, the Drucker and Wanda, will also run Windows Mobile and sport GPS. The Drucker will have wi-fi. The Wanda looks suspiciously like the Treo 500v.

Vodaphone restraining order threatens T-Mobile's iPhone exclusivity
Added on 2007-11-19 15:41:00
by Mark Brezinski
There is cellular unrest in Germany. The Vodaphone chapter out there has gotten a restraining order against the local T-Mobile branch over their exclusive rights to the iPhone. Basically, they're arguing that it's fine for T-Mobile to sell the phone exclusively, but they feel an unlocked version should also be offered, as is customary in Europe. No official reactions have been issued as of yet; the only info out there is that Vodaphone's bid for the restraining order was approved. We'll be sure to update as this German vignette plays out.

If you thought AT&T was the only carrier with visual voicemail, think again. European carrier Vodaphone has just introduced a new service in Germany where new voicemails are instantly sent to subscribers as a MMS that they can click on and play at their convenience. Looks like voicemail screening is getting a little easier…

iPhone accidently unlocked to work with Vodaphone?
Added on 2007-07-19 10:40:00
by Randall Bennett
Wow, while we can't confirm the news, sounds like someone in the UK is actually using an iPhone over Vodaphone's network. Essentially the user used the previous iAsign exploit to unlock the phone from using the bundled SIM card from AT&T (a feat we documented a few days ago.) The user then replaced the SIM with another AT&T SIM that just happened to work with Vodaphone, and Voila!
The user says Visual Voicemail doesn't work, which makes sense, but all other services work. The phone still has the AT&T logo in the upper left corner, but regardless, some progress toward unlocking the iPhone. Good news for UK residents on importing the phone too.

Verizon prepping to buy back some of VzW from Vodaphone?
Added on 2007-06-25 08:21:00
by Randall Bennett

Some are speculating that Verizon is sick of sharing its wireless bed with Vodaphone and is looking to buy out more of Vodaphone's stake in VzW. The speculation is fueled by Verizon's June 14th SEC filing in which they asked for another $8 billion in debt, which raised many an analyst eyebrow. No one is saying Verizon will purchase the entire 45% stake Vodaphone owns in the carrier, but speculation continues that they'll buy some part of the stake.
Verizon spun off the wireless unit way back in 2000 and took $10 billion for Vodaphone's minority stake in the company, but with all the success of Verizon as a wireless carrier, it'd likely take more than $10 billion to buy it back.

Orange & Vodafone Let Go Of VoIP In Nokia N95

by Tanya Palta
Hate to be the messenger of doom (god I'm dramatic) but both Orange and Vodafone in the UK have decided to disable the internet telephony option in Nokia N95!
A Nokia spokeswoman was heard saying: "This a handset-specific issue," she said. "In this particular instance Orange was asked by Nokia whether they wanted the functionality switched on or off, and Orange selected off."

Vodaphone announces flat-rate roaming charges
Added on 2007-03-17 11:04:00
by Emily Price
Vodaphone is making roaming a little easier on the wallet for European customers. Rather than charge customers by the megabyte for checking email and surfing the web when they travel Voadphone has decided to opt for a simple 12EUR per day fee. The program is set to start to July 1 and covers customers for up to 50mb of data per day.
