iPhone 1.1.4 Firmware update
Added on 2008-02-26 13:17:00
by Alfredo Padilla
Looks like Apple decided not to ignore the iPhone entirely today as they just released firmware version 1.1.4 for the iPhone, according to Gizmodo. We're downloading as we speak and will be back soon with screenshots and analysis. Gizmodo also notes that there's nothing coming down the pike on the Apple Developer Connection so we don't know if the SDK is imminent.
Update: TUAW is reporting that you can Jailbreak the iPhone under 1.1.4, we're still waiting for the download to complete.
Update the second: Still waiting for the firmware to download but we've got a couple of screenshots of the thing downloading after the jump. Sound exciting? If so, I've got a bridge I'd like to sell you. Reports from around the web are that there's nothing particularly exciting here, everyone suspects this is setting up SDK support, and that's probably not far off. Of course without the SDK itself and applications (please!) it's not particularly exciting.

iPhone 1.1.2 Firmware Out Now
Added on 2007-11-08 20:59:00
by Richard Baguley
Engadget is reporting that Apple has just released version 1.1.2 firmware for the iPhone to coincide with the UK launch of the iPhone on Friday. The UK version comes with 1.1.2 pre-installed, but it looks like the changes for the new version are relatively minor - mostly just different keyboard layouts for European languages and a few other tweaks.
The other big question is if the new version will stop the various hacks that open up the phone; initial reports from UK press who are reviewing the device are that is does block the Jailbreak and AppInstaller programs from working. We'll install the update and test it ourselves as soon as possible; watch this space.

Apple iPhone update 1.02 available
Added on 2007-08-21 17:18:00
by Alfredo Padilla
It looks like Apple has made available another minor update for the iPhone. 1.02 purports to fix some bugs in the phone. As with the 1.01 update you have to do a full restore if your iPhone has been hacked. Here are the highlights: more details after the jump.
- The Field Test mode still works (see here for details), and the version is now reported as 03.14.08_G. They still haven't fixed the misspelling of firmware; it still says "firware".
- iFuntastic still works, allowing you to get into the iPhone and update files, logos, ringtones, etc
- The installer.app hack still works: the only difference on the installation procedure is that you get a third option for the firmware version.
- We are seeing reports of faster WiFi performance, but we haven't seen any improvements ourselves. One of our iPhones still refuses to work with one WiFi network for no obvious reason, and we don't see any significant difference on another network

Palm recalls latest 700 series update
Added on 2007-08-14 09:41:00
by Randall Bennett
File this one under "D'oh, not again!" Palm continues to dig their own grave as they've recalled their latest updates to the 700p and 700w/wx. Palm says the updates can trigger some sort of "Data network is not available message" when attempting to connect to the data network. Apparently the error doesn't actually affect the handset, but instead causes the device to not function properly when using OTA data. It's a little bit scary, and Palm has pulled the updates from their site, but we're still waiting to hear about how to downgrade, affected users or if Palm will release an expedited update. Gamblers playing Palm in the death pool should feel a little more secure in their wagers.

Added on 2007-07-31 19:21:00
by Alfredo Padilla
We just saw over on Howard Forums that the 1.01 update for the iPhone is now available for download and install. It looks like Apple wasn't kidding when they said there would be an update coming out soon, unfortunately it doesn't look like this update is going to bring any of the cool features we speculated about earlier today. We've completed the whole process now, screenshots and comments after the jump.

All your iPhone dreams about to come true?
Added on 2007-07-31 10:35:00
by Alfredo Padilla
Since the iPhone was released with a long list of missing features and small bugs iPhone owners have awaited the first software update like the coming of the messiah. Looks like the wait might not be much longer as according to Apple Insider no less trustworthy a source than Apple's VP of iPod Marketing Greg Joswiak stated in a meeting with an analyst that "An iPhone patch is expected shortly."
We could talk about the analyst's speculation on what will be included in the patch, but instead we decided it would be more fun (and probably just as accurate) to speculate ourselves. Here's our guesses about what will be included in this initial patch:
* bug fix for the crashing Safari and iPod problems
* bug fix for the battery meter issue
Of course just like everyone else we'd like to see a whole lot more, but this is what we feel fairly certain about. What about all of you, what would you like to see most in this first patch?

Assisted GPS new standard for Nokia
Added on 2007-07-20 11:58:00
by Mark Brezinski
Nokia evidently plans to incorporate Assisted GPS support into all future devices with GPS functionality. This will let you to find navigation options faster and also allow emergency services to locate you quicker. Currently Nokia has two phones equipped with this new standard: N95 owners will find this service in the latest firmware update, while the 6110 Navigator has A-GPS built in.
"Nokia," you must be asking, "why is A-GPS so much better than GPS?" While, Nokia can't hear you talking at your monitor, but we will try our best to explain. Normally GPS information is relayed from a satellite to a receiver at around 50bps. After the long download, the receiver has to calculate location. Basically, A-GPS is is a normal GPS receiver attached to a reference network and a super fast processor. The reference network provides data that would otherwise have to be downloaded and the processor allows much faster calculations.
We tip our collective hat to Nokia for embracing this technology. Most companies still haven't embraced plain 'ol GPS support yet.

Palm and Verizon update Treo
Added on 2007-07-13 12:34:00
by Mark Brezinski
Palm Treo users on Verizon have just received a fairly substantial functionality update. The more significant update was for the 700w while there was a minor one for the 700wx. The 1.22 patch for the 700w introduces high-speed DUN, so your Treo can now moonlight as a wireless modem. Also, your music will now be able to grace your Bluetooth headphones via the addition of A2DP support. Other updates include a minor interface upgrade which provides more accessible speakerphone and mute buttons, enhanced hands-free carkit support, and some abbreviated dialing utility. The patch isn't so glamorous for the 700wx, simply updating the DUN some and integrating a few more Daylight Savings features.
You can download the patch here.

A new version of firmware (11.0.026) has been released for the Nokia N95. This version of firmware provides a few network and call updates, but nothing major has changed in terms of user experience. You can get the new firmware by running Nokia's firmware update utility. Although the changes may not seem like much its always a good idea to keep things up to date.
