Palm recalls latest 700 series update

File this one under "D'oh, not again!" Palm continues to dig their own grave as they've recalled their latest updates to the 700p and 700w/wx. Palm says the updates can trigger some sort of "Data network is not available message" when attempting to connect to the data network. Apparently the error doesn't actually affect the handset, but instead causes the device to not function properly when using OTA data. It's a little bit scary, and Palm has pulled the updates from their site, but we're still waiting to hear about how to downgrade, affected users or if Palm will release an expedited update. Gamblers playing Palm in the death pool should feel a little more secure in their wagers.

Willcom recalling over 100k batteries

It's no laptop battery recall (see a video demonstration for some time-wasting entertainment) but Willcom, an overseas carrier, says they're recalling about 134,000 batteries. The company says they're not at risk for exploding, but they could heat up or become swollen after a physical shock. No word on exactly how much physical shock it'd take, although we'd assume it's more than just a simple drop. The company says five customers have contacted the company about the problematic batteries, but there aren't any consumer injuries reported. Willcom also says the batteries won't catch fire nor explode because of some built-in safety devices.
Scary stuff when it's in your lap, but we find it a little more frightening when it's in your pocket. Oh, and this time it isn't Sony's faulty batteries, it's actually NEC's problem.
