by Tanya Palta

Kevin O'Brien from Brighthand played around with the Xperia X1 and already is warning Apple to watch out! The smartphone has an incredible display and even the touch-screen was found to be extremely intuitive. Sony Ericsson really has a winner here according to Brien as even the build quality and the much touted home-layout doesn’t disappoint.

Chinese QWERTY and GPS combo
Added on 2007-06-26 14:37:00

Typically we don't see too many QWERTY phones developed behind the Great Wall, but JAMP turned us on to this interesting phone that features both the aformentioned QWERTY keys as well as GPS.  To be honest, the device looks more like a portable GPS unit than a phone, but still sports the standard PDA functions and has a 1.3 megapixel camera, MicroSD support and has a fold-out antenna to be sure you get the full GPS coverage necessary.  No word on price, but we'd guess even if you knew how much it cost, you wouldn't be able to get it anyway.

Oh, and one more little fun fact?  Check out the MacOS 9 logo to the right of the earpiece where the video conferencing phone is at.  Nice lil' touch of trademark infringement to round out the device. (click the thumbnail for a larger version)

Sharp's Advanced/W-Zero3 [es]: Long name, long form factor
Added on 2007-06-07 14:06:00
by Randall Bennett

We'll give Sharp a few awards with their latest QWERTY handset, but these are the kind of awards you don't really like too much.  Chief among them: the award for longest phone, but coming up a close second is The award for longest name (Advanced/W-ZERO3 [es].)  Granted, we haven't seen the phone up close and in person yet, so we can't have a real perspective for how long it truly is... but some of us are from the school of thought that if the phone hangs off your face, it's probably too long.

Dubious awards aside, tit looks like a pretty solid Windows Mobile handset running a custom version of Smartphone, Japanese edition.  Japanese consumers might dig the three inch wide LCD at 480x800 res, 520 MHz processor, WiFi and MicroSD, but without Bluetooth support, it won't be the top of the pack.  It doesn't look like there's a camera on there either, but perhaps smartphone users in Japan won't miss that either.

Bottom line? Smartphone geeks might dig the form factor, but no Bluetooth nor camera equals no dice for us.

BlackJack's Windows Mobile 6 ROM leaked on the net
Added on 2007-06-04 15:35:00
by Randall Bennett

Carriers seem to be full of more and more holes these days, but now it's more than just information.  We've heard reports of leaked roms before, but now we're hearing that the latest version of Samsung's BlackJack has hit the interwebs.  If you're the proud owner of Sammy's QWERTY king, a little bit of less reputable searching will net you the WIndows Mobile 6 version of the device ROM.

To be sure, we're not endorsing piracy in any form, and if you actually do go about finding the illegal ROM, it's not walk in the park to install... it's quite to the contrary.  Instead of poking around with crazy keypress combinations and having to install some random modem driver, you could just wait for the official release from Samsung which should be hitting any day now.
