BlackBerry Pearls 8110 and 8120 coming to AT&T
Added on 2008-04-01 09:17:00
by Mark Brezinski
According to a press release and the vigilant journalists at Boy Genius Reports, it seems that AT&T is expecting two bouncing baby BlackBerries. The BlackBerry Pearl 8110 and Pearl 8120 are essentially the same phone, only the 8110 has GPS and the 8120 has wi-fi capabilities. While it's nice that AT&T will be able to offer a choice in Pearls, we also wish RIM would just cram both features into one Pearl. They could even give it a lame pun name, like the Su-Pearl, and we wouldn't complain.
We reviewed the Pearl 8130, which is, again, essentially the same phone. If you want a pretty good idea of how these two phones will measure up, you should check it out.
You can check out the press release here, or the Boy Genius story here, complete with pictures.

The Blackberry Pearl 8130 is yet another phone which got a color makeover courtesy Verizon Wireless. With releasing the smartphone in Pink, looks like Verizon is serious about wooing the fairer sex and with Valentine’s Day just round the corner, the Pink 8130 may be a good idea.

Vodaphone lineup leak
Added on 2008-01-06 14:05:00
by Mark Brezinski
The astute guys at Boy Genius eagle-eyed a few new handsets Vodaphone name-dropped in a presentation. Fortunately for us and you, noble reader, they posted the slides. There was a mystery handset (pictured right) as well as two handsets each from Nokia, BlackBerry, HP, and Palm.
The Nokia phones were the E66 (Dora), and E71 (Liam). Logic dictates the E66 is a sequel to the E65. This means it's likely to have great enterprise software, VOIP and SIP capabilities (so you can forward desk calls to your VOIP), and, more than likely, Nokia's garbage 2-Megapixel camera.
The two BlackBerry devices were the Pearl 8110 and a mysterious 8000 series device that was previously fabled as a flagship 9000 series device.
HP's handsets are the Silver and Oak. Both will run Windows Mobile and have GPS and wi-fi.
Palm's devices, the Drucker and Wanda, will also run Windows Mobile and sport GPS. The Drucker will have wi-fi. The Wanda looks suspiciously like the Treo 500v.

BlackBerry Pearl for Spring coming on Black Friday?
Added on 2007-08-24 15:57:00
by Alfredo Padilla

Boy Genius Report is, well... reporting... that the BlackBerry Pearl 2 for Sprint may be released around Thanksgiving, which should make for some interesting fist fights to get to the phone on Black Friday. Admitting the tenuousness of their information BGR also states that: "the date we were given was more like a timeframe, please consider it such", which indicates to us that you may not want to bank on this. Also, as an additional crumb thrown in, they state that a CDMA Curve should be coming in Q1 of 2008.

RIM earnings up huge, Palm loses ground
Added on 2007-06-29 11:46:00
by Randall Bennett
Both mobile device maker RIM and Palm reported earnings yesterday, and most people reading WirelessInfo probably realize RIM hit a sweet spot with the BlackBerry Pearl, while Palm continues to reel from a lack of innovation. It should come as no surprise that RIM reported blockbuster earnings, rising 73% this quarter gaining $1.06 per share, compared to Palm's 15 cent per share loss. And while we're no stock analysts, we don't see too much changing in the way of Palm and RIM's future. RIM is on track to ship a version of the Pearl 2, adding much more multimedia rich features to an already stellar device, while Palm is planning to release the Foleo, a "mobile companion" device we consider to be DOA.

Non-iPhone visual voicemail
Added on 2007-06-27 10:03:00
by Randall Bennett
Looks like the iPhone's "Visual Voicemail" killer app might not be an iPhone exclusive anymore, as SimulSays hit beta today for BlackBerry. The press release is scant on specific details, but it sounds like users can download an app for their BlackBerry and then are able to see who left a voicemail through caller ID, then be able to return the call or send back an email using the BlackBerry. Right now the app is only specified to work with the BlackBerry Pearl, 8800, and Curve, but the company says a Windows Mobile version is coming sometime later today. We're interested in how the product works, and are going to give it a shot on one of our Pearls lying around the office.
Update: Just gave the service a run-through, and it would be a welcome addition to the BlackBerry, except your voicemail callers have to listen to an ad that says, "this call will be transcribed through simulscribe.com," every time they leave a voicemail. It'd be fine, except it feels like a disclaimer, which scared one of our voicemailers.
Also, cellphone users might feel weird about having to set up conditional call forwarding and using a third-party voicemail system. It's pretty simple to activate -- users of SimulSays need simply to enter in *004*4435520548*11# to activate the service -- but the idea of someone other than a mobile provider having voicemail might be touchy for some.
However, those two caveats aside, we kind of dig the service. It's simple to use and acts as a secondary call log when your phone isn't on, plus you won't use up talk-time minutes when listening to voicemail. I just installed this on my personal phone, and I think despite the annoying ad, I'll leave it on for the convenience factor.

Say hello to Pearl two?
Added on 2007-06-18 13:26:00
by Randall Bennett

With the Pearl seeing widespread success (including a place in my pocket) the newly leaked specs of the Pearl 2 look to improve upon what the Pearl started, and if true, improve well. The rumored specs include many media centric features, like a 3.5mm headphone jack, A2DP support (for Stereo Bluetooth headphones,) support for WMA DRM (no word on PlaysForSure, but we'll assume) external MicroSD slot and support for streaming media. Beyond the media highlights, the device is rumored to sport a 3.2 megapixel camera, improved flash and come in some new colors (like the pictured blue, which we think is a render.) BGR reports RIM is planning a huge marketing campaign for the device, but something tells us that if they deliver on these rumored specs, we'll be sold (again) with or without marketing. Keep in mind this is contrary from the specs we heard earlier, but we're fans of fixing the major shortcomings of a device before promising a major overhaul, so no biggie.

Rumored: BlackBerry Pearl 2?
Added on 2007-06-11 09:47:00
by Randall Bennett

The BlackBerry Pearl may have only six months under its belt, but Gizmodo has some details from an anonymous source on the phone's upcoming successor. They say the phone will feature 3G in the form of EV-DO, likely indicating a CDMA release, but the best part? The source says RIM has finally shattered its thirst for fat devices, as the Pearl 2 is rumored to be a mere 8mm in depth, which is half the depth of a closed RAZR. Add in a two megapixel camera and the rumored device sounds like a pretty nice upgrade to an already solid device. The tipster says you can pick up the device in Q4 of 2007, but didn't leave a price nor any pics of the device. We're hoping the rumor pans out, except we're a little worried about the slimmed down Pearl's slimmed down battery. Hopefully the weight loss program won't nuke the devices battery life.
