O2 Promises Unlimited Data Plans For iPhone Users
Added on 2007-11-05 11:04:00
by Tanya Palta

The Think-Tank at Verizon Wireless can sure take a page out of O2’s book. The company has offered an “unlimited” data plan for iPhone users where there will be no data capping under any circumstances.

'Customers find 'unlimited with limits' confusing, plus most people don't speak in megabits or understand what they equate to," said O2 UK chief executive Matthew Key.

''So we've taken the decision to remove the fair usage cap so that 'unlimited' really does mean 'unlimited' – this is a market first."

Yahoo To Provide Mobile Services To O2
Added on 2007-10-01 17:19:00
by Tanya Palta

Yahoo’s deal with Telefonica, the owner of O2 has gone through. The deal entails Yahoo providing Internet search facilities for the Spanish mobile phone operator via oneSearch. Both companies will share the advertising revenue and expect the service to go live by first quarter of 2008.

Geraldine Wilson, vice president of Yahoo! Europe mobile division said:

"There are a number of different targeting advertising options we can do. Age and gender for example are specifics that are only passed on if the user declares them – but demographics, geographics and behavioural facts can be used."

Hands On With The UK O2 iPhone
Added on 2007-09-18 10:09:00
by Richard Baguley

Engadget got some hands-on time with the new UK iPhone running on O2's network, and the differences between it and the US version look to be pretty minimal: There's an option for European languages (presumably the same phone will be sold through the various rumored European carriers), the ability to switch the roaming carrier and the iTunes WiFi music store comes pre-installed. But perhaps the most interesting difference shows in this shot that Conrad Quilty-Harper took of the O2 phone next to his unlocked phone on T-Mobile; we've zoomed in on the carrier logos. The O2 phone is browsing at GPRS speeds (a maximum of 14.4kbps, while the T-Mobile iPhone is running on EDGE). As he wryly puts it: “O2's EDGE coverage sucks”; the company only claims to have 30% of the UK covered. We browsing is already slow over EDGE; I hate to think what's it's going to be like over the GPRS coverage the O2 will be offering iPhone users over the rest of their network...

iPhone Launches in UK for £269
Added on 2007-09-18 04:09:00
by Richard Baguley

At an event in London this morning, Apple head Steve Jobs announced the first foreign version of the iPhone. Running on the O2 network, the UK iPhone will cost £269 (approx $530). It will go on sale on the 9th of November. The UK iPhone will have the same memory capacity (8GB) and EDGE data support as the US version. The UK calling plans will cost £35, $45 and $55, and all will include unlimited data and visual voicemail.  They will also include roaming onto the Cloud  WiFi network that includes  7,500 Wifi hotspots. The required contract will be for 18 months. O2's iPhone page is here, and Apple UK has a new page on the iPhone in their store here.

Interestingly enough, O2 also offers the Nokia N95, but that is free if you sign up for a £30 a month, 18 month contract. So this provides an serious choice for UK customers: a free N95 at £30 , or a £269 iPhone at $35...

O2 Cocoon: OLED hotness
Added on 2007-08-03 13:01:00
by Randall Bennett

We haven't paid too much attention to the O2 Cocoon, but after the mob' pointed us toward an unboxing, we were quite impressed.  The clamshell features a beautiful OLED external display, which looks to blend in perfectly with the handset's exterior.  Apparently, the front display can show a clock, or even scroll text from SMS messages.  Color us impressed.  Check out the full unboxing pics, but keep in mind, this phone isn't slated to come out in the US ever... but admire away.

However those who have no commitment issues can make use of UK provider O2’s latest offer which entails a free Moto RIZR Z8 with a £35 per month contract. The phone comes bundled with a Motorola S9 Stereo Bluetooth Headset and includes a 2 megapixel camera, and microSD (up to 4GB) support and HSDPA support.

O2, T-Mobile and Virgin Interested In Mobile Advertising
Added on 2007-03-12 22:28:00
by Tanya Palta

Love them or hate them but there is no escaping advertisements! If you thought your mobiles were a safe haven from ads, think again! Looks like, O2, T-Mobile and Virgin Mobile are thinking of introducing advertising to their mobile video and internet portals. This is not new as one saw Nokia launching two mobile advertising services, a couple of months ago!

Tom Henriksson, director of Nokia Ad Service, said: "As advertisers struggle with targeting in traditional media such as print and TV, mobile advertising is becoming an increasingly attractive channel for brands."
