Nokia N95 with 3G Battery Tests: First Results
Added on 2007-10-04 09:07:00
by Richard Baguley

We just got our first set of battery life test results for the N95 with US 3G support: in our Web browsing test, the new version of the N95 was able to keep browsing over a 3G network for 6 hours 12 minutes. Under exactly the same conditions, the old N95 (using an EDGE connection) was able to keep on browsin' for 7 hours  15 minutes. So, adding the 3G radio to the N95 has a penalty in terms of battery life, but it's not as bad as we thought it might be.

A browsing time of 6 hours and 12 minutes on a 3G network is very good: most of the other 3G phones we have tested run out of juice after 3 or 4 hours. The Treo 750, for instance, gave up the ghost after just 3 hours and 3 minutes, while the RAZR2 V9m on Verizon lasted 4 hours 45 minutes. So the N95-3 definitely looks like a strong candidate for having the longest 3G browsing battery life that we've seen so far. However, remember that this is just a first test: we run battery test several times to make sure that we are getting accurate results. We'll publish these results as the tests are done.

One thing to bear in mind; the N95 with US 3G support has a 1200mAh battery, which is significantly bigger than the 950mAh battery in the older, non-3G N95. So the 3G radio is definitely adversely affecting the battery life, but the bigger battery is doing a lot to compensate for that. And eagle-eyed readers may notice that the browsing time for the old N95 differs from the one in our original review; that's because Nokia has issued a  firmware update since then that improves the Web browser.

UPDATE: Nokia asked us to clarify the naming of this phone; it is just (and somewhat confusingly) called the N95. So, to differentiate it from the previous N95, we've updated this post to call it the N95 with US 3G support. So if we just say N95, we are referrign to the older model, but if we say N95 with US 3G support, we're talking about the newer one.

First Call: Nokia N95-3
Added on 2007-10-03 13:46:00
by Alfredo Padilla

Lookie what just came calling, so to speak, the updated version of the Nokia N95. The N95 of course has been one of the most widely admired smart phones out there, and did fairly well in our own review of it, but that doesn't mean it couldn't use some improvements. Thankfully Nokia thought so too and so has graced us with this slightly updated version that sports US 3G, 128 MB of RAM and a slightly thicker case that accommodates a larger battery. We have to say that we like what we've seen of the handset so far. More of our thoughts and some direct comparisons to the older N95 after the jump.

Unrequited love: LG-SH150 -- A stylish, yet data crazy, phone
Added on 2007-08-10 09:13:00
by Randall Bennett

Wow... LG's SH150 has our international eyes figuratively popping out of our head, but less for the specifics to this device and more for Korean standards we wish we were in on. LG's stylish slider has it going on from a feature set perspective, with its support of DMB, an over-the-air digital broadcasting standard, and the latest version of HSDPA, supporting up to 7.2 Mbps.

We keep hearing how WiMax is headed our way, especially via Sprint, but seriously LG, you're making us sick here.  Get some pressure on American carriers to implement some of this stuff.

Data-driven handheld platform gets 3G with AT&T
Added on 2007-06-21 09:47:00
by Randall Bennett

We guess that an "all business" device has to kind of be "all ugly" too, at least if PsionTeklogix' Workabout Pro is any indication.  Sure, beneath the surface it isn't too horrible, sporting an HSDPA radio, WiFi and Bluetooth, and the externals aren't ugly without a purpose, the device should withstand almost any physical abuse you could throw at it, but something about a water-resistant Windows Mobile device dressed to survive multiple falls feels a little perverted.  Truth be told, the device isn't really a phone, and is targeted toward businesses having use for handheld computers (think about oil changes at Wal-Mart, for example,) and in fact, it's the next natural evolution of adding 3G data to an already data-centric device, so in reality it is a good idea. However, our superficiality has to shine through at least a little bit.

The ugly-face Workabout Pro is available today, and just in case you're a business, you can pick it up from Psion's website.

LG's "Fatty Chocolate" hits Europeans today
Added on 2007-06-20 15:55:00
by Randall Bennett

LG's Chocolate is a pretty successful device in the US, and it looks like LG's design team is going pull a MotoRAZR on us and implement the design cues in a variety of devices.  LG's KU850 hits Europe today with a bit wider form-factor.  The phone embraces some extra width and loses some depth (we're talking size wise, not feature wise) and puts an interesting twist on the Chocolate design framework.  The "fatty Chocolate," as cell phone geeks are dubbing the phone, sports Bluetooth 2.0, a 2 megapixel cam, a forward facing cam for video conferencing action, MicroSD and requisite HSDPA.  Sounds pricey, but fun.

We've heard many-a Chocolate owner decry the touch sensitive send/end buttons on the face of the device, and looks like LG didn't listen for the KU850, but if some spy pics posted over at Engadget Mobile for the VX8550 are any indication, future implementations of the Chocolate look should move the send/end buttons into a less accident-prone place.

Two unreleased Moto phones on eBay
Added on 2007-06-19 08:08:00
by Randall Bennett

While the GSM version of Motorola's Q won't be hitting stores for a few months, one has shown up on eBay.  If that weren't enough, a GSM version of the yet-to-be announced Q9H also has made an appearance on the auction site.

The site lists the Q9h specs as a quad-band phone supporting HSDPA, a two megapixel camera, A2DP, MicroSD slot and the seller throws in a 512mb SD card.  The hardest spec to swallow? The $750 pricetag. However, since the phone hasn't hit store shelves yet, one would expect to drop a significant premium on such an illusive device.

The other unreleased device, the GSM Q, doesn't see any major spec changes from it's CDMA cousin (other than EDGE data, which is expected,) but it's still a quad band phone with 128 MB of internal memory, Bluetooth, 2.4" screen and other standard specs for a phone that's essentially a year old.  The phone is the black version, sans branding from anyone, and the sellers say the phone is unlocked.  The price?  This one will run you $500, which costs as much as some other hotly anticipated phone available in 10 days.

The rest of Sony Ericsson's phones
Added on 2007-06-14 14:41:00
by Randall Bennett

We've been waiting, and waiting, and waiting for some extra details on Sony Ericsson's new phone lineup, and finally they're official. Of course, there's the K850 (pictured, third from left) we wrote about earlier, but there's also some information on the two new Walkman phones to the party, the W910 and W960.

The W960 rocks a full 8GB of onboard storage (like some other music-phone we keep hearing about,) a 3.2 megapixel camera and a touchscreen. The W910 (pictured, first from left) doesn't have any crazy onboard storage, but does have a two megapixel cam, requisite A2DP support and will come in both black and red colors.

All three phones feature the aforementioned Gracenote technology for song identification, ala Verizon's VCast implementation for which you might be seeing ads.   Sony Ericsson also announced two phones that won't be crawling onto US shores, the K530 (fourth from left,) a less interesting 3G candybar phone, and the uber low-end Z250 flip phone (pictured second from left.)  All of the phones and watches from Sony Ericsson will be released toward the end of 2007.

Four new Sony Ericsson phones on June 14th?
Added on 2007-06-08 10:47:00
by Randall Bennett

A crafty forum poster has some info on some new handsets Sony Ericsson will be announcing on June 14th.  The Sofia, which would be their new flagship Cybershot handset, features a 5MP camera, xenon flash (goodbye LEDs!) and HSDPA (including the US 850MHz band.)

The Shinobu could be Walkman's cream of the crop, a slider again with HSDPA, but interestingly features some motion control.  Tilt the phone forward, the music skips forward.  Tilt it back, the music skips back.  Shake the handset, and the phone skips to a random track.  It's not a new feature though, since the W580 also has the feature.

The forum poster also claims to have info on two other handsets, albeit less info.  The tipster says the Anastasia will rock a 1.3 MP camera, probably for the budget crowd.  The Mool, however, could be a little more interesting walkman phone, potentially featuring 8GB of flash memory and the tipster says the unit includes a stereo Bluetooth headset in the box.

We'll be waiting till June 14th to see what's really announced but hopefully the forum poster is dead on.  Cybershots have the reputation of being toward the high end of the cameraphone spectrum, so a five megapixel shooter will be one we definitely want to get our hands on, especially since Samsung and LG already have their own five megapixel shooters.

UPDATE: On some additional searching, we found the spy shots that have been floating around for a few months of both the Shinobu and the Sofia (aka'd as the K850i, which looks to have one of the worst keypads we've ever seen.)  Oh, and to be clear, the Xenon flash is nothing new, but we're always excited when "proper" cameraphones have "proper" flashes.

New HSDPA slide and rotate from Samsung
Added on 2007-06-07 09:54:00
by Randall Bennett

We'll always respect a good slider and Samsung's latest phone to hit Korea looks like it'll hold its own.  The SPH-W2400 looks like a solid HSDPA slider that also rotates to better accommodate video.  Other than the always interesting slide-to-rotate form factor, the phone features TV-Out, although not too sure when we'd truly like to see cell-phone quality video on a larger screen.  It sports a two megapixel camera, MP3 playback, Bluetooth and Micro SD.  Naturally, no plans to see the phone in the US as of yet, but if you import one it should work on US GSM networks.

We've got some more pics after the break, if you want to see the full slide-and-rotate action. (click Read More)

New iPhone ad:
Added on 2007-06-06 16:59:00
by Randall Bennett

Another new iPhone ad hit the airwaves (or cable...waves....) today on CNBC touting the iPhone's internet abilities.  The spot (YouTube'd after the break for your viewing pleasure) claims the browser isn't surfing any sort of mobile web, but instead surfing the real web.  To us, surfing the "real web" can't be too fun with that 2.5G EDGE connection *zing!* but we're sure the experience looks good.  Just wait till we get our hands on the phone June 29th... then we'll know how great it truly is.

AT&T and Samsung unleash two HSDPA phones for the masses
Added on 2007-06-06 15:09:00
by Randall Bennett

AT&T dropped their latest flip and candybar from Samsung, the A717 and A727.  The flip variety, the A717, sports a two megapixel camera, $150 price tag (with contract) and the lovely HSDPA we've all come to dream about.  The A727 is similar in its HSDPA leanings, but sports a 1.3 megapixel camera with a $100 (with contract) price.  Both phones also support protected music from Napster, Yahoo and any other PlaysForSure provider you can dream of.  Pretty standard faire, but we always appreciate some slim staple phones.  Both are available right this second.

Motorola Unveils Razr v2
Added on 2007-05-15 09:01:00
by Alfredo Padilla

Motorola today announced the Razr v2, the newest addition to its Razr lineup of cell phones. The v2 has a large 2" external display that sports innovative haptics technology which simulates the feel of a real button press on the touch sensitive display. It will be available in CDMA/EVDO and GSM/EDGE/HSDPA versions this summer.

The Razr v2 is 2mm slimmer than previous Razr's and some (not all) versions will run Motorola's Linux/Java platform (finally a new OS!). We assume that the some means that Verizon users will be stuck with BREW again. The v2 has a 500 Mhz ARM processor, USB 2.0, software that automatically turns up the volume when you are in a noisy area and text to speech capabilities. It also sports 2GB of built in memory (or 420MB depending on the version), A2DP for stereo bluetooth and syncs with Windows Media Player. More after the jump.

Samsung SPH-H1200 USB Dongle
Added on 2007-04-13 01:16:00
by Tanya Palta

Samsung Korea launched its WiBro USB Dongle, the Samsung SPH-H1200 USB Dongle recently which can access both WiBro and HSDPA services. One need to use an external device in conjunction with the Dongle to access the Internet via WiBro. The downside? You need to relocate to exotic Korea for accessing this service!

From Samsung's press release:
"Consumers in metropolitan areas can enjoy 13Mbps high-speed wireless Internet services at a more affordable price via WiBro. Users in less connected areas across the country can enjoy Wireless Internet services via HSDPA."
