Pwnage iPhone hacking tool available
Added on 2008-04-03 10:56:00
by Mark Brezinski

Pwnage, the iPhone hacking tool by the Dev Team, is now available for public consumption. The way Pwnage works is that it actually gives your iPhone a firmware update, unlocking the phone and letting it run any application. Now, iPhone unlocking is by no means new, but Pwnage appears to be more durable than previous methods. The proof of this is the Dev Team's ability to re-unlock the phone within a day of each new update.

Kudos to the iPhone Dev Team, for their continuing efforts to make the iPhone experience better than Apple ever intended.

N-Gage hacked to work on any Nokia handset
Added on 2008-02-06 08:19:00
by Mark Brezinski

Just a day after the N-Gage preview/soft launch on the N81, the service has been hacked to work on any Nokia handset. You can either opt to download the hacked version, or follow some fairly easy steps so you can nonchalantly tell your friends you hacked your phone and, if they're lucky, you can hack theirs.

One thing you should keep in mind, however, is that this isn't the full launch -- or really the relaunch, we haven't forgotten about side-talkin' -- of the N-Gage platform; all your online data will get erased when the real thing rolls out.

iTunes 7.4.2. Update Once Again Play Havoc With DIY Ringtones
Added on 2007-09-18 14:08:00
by Tanya Palta

Looks like Apple is on a warpath when it comes to DIY ringtones. They released yet another update to iTunes (7.4.2) which once again makes it difficult to create customize ringtones. However we did say difficult and not impossible as Shadowfax in the MacRumors forums already has a cure.  So if interested head over to his forum for a complete set of instructions.

Messy hardware iPhone unlock?
Added on 2007-08-21 12:24:00
by Randall Bennett

So, we're still waiting to crack open the champagne, but another group claims they've discovered an iPhone hardware hack.  We're inclined to believe the hack is either A) extremely risky or B) the video above is faked. The group says they're going to update their site with instructions next Tuesday, but until then we'll be waiting, patiently, till we can use T-Mobile on the iPhone.

iPhone NES emulator review
Added on 2007-08-21 08:26:00
by Mark Brezinski

We recently set our resident iPhones up with the newest version of the NES emulator. We put on a diverse set of sample roms, including action, puzzle, and RPG. We can say, after playing all our test games, that the emulator needs a lot of work before its final release.

First of all, regardless of any other control issues, the touch screen button layout as it is is simply not meant for this type of gaming. There isn't any tactile feedback, and the display only sporadically shows what button you're actually pressing. This wouldn't be so bad if the d-pad graphic wasn't mapped so poorly. As it is, it's placed about a quarter inch to the right of where it should be, meaning hitting right requires you to press part of the game display. In addition, it feels more like left, up, and right are completely in line with each other, meaning you'll most likely hit left and right a few times before you score an elusive up; you can't even hit an exaggerated up. It's also near impossible to hit more than one button at a time on the d-pad, meaning you'll need to steer clear of games where you need to crawl, or any game with Street Fighter type moves. In the same vein, you can't hit A & B simultaneously, making Duck Tales and Double Dragon games far more difficult. Don't think you're safe with just hitting one button at a time either; the controls are very unresponsive, and sometimes completely ignore inputs. The last problem with control is it seems as though you can't simply tap a direction without it being held in for a period of time. This makes any sort of platforming game simply not worth downloading. In fact, downloading anything other than RPGs or non-action-based puzzle games will just result in frustration.

Simple iPhone hacking method?
Added on 2007-08-20 10:59:00
by Randall Bennett

While it's been possible to hack an iPhone for a while, the process wasn't as simple as drag-n-drop. Now, after doing a few things in terminal, an installer icon pops up on the home screen. Now, inside the app, users can install applications as simply as clicking on an icon. A very simple OTA method, but we'll see how simple, as we're testing this out.  We'll post more in a bit as we crack open our iPhone.

Doom coming to iPhone
Added on 2007-08-11 14:35:00
by Mark Brezinski

Old-school gamers with new-school handsets rejoice: hackers have released Doom for the iPhone! Well, "released" is a strong word since the controls and sound don't work. Basically all you can do is stare at it and wish you could play. Also, while there isn't any time frame as to if/when a working version will be released, this is a step in the right direction. We were left wondering exactly how the control scheme would work. Will it have a frame at the bottom with a virtual gamepad, or will it have some kind of touch-to-shoot interface? We're really looking forward to this one.

iPhone hacks: We iP0wn the iPhone
Added on 2007-07-13 17:36:00
by Randall Bennett

We told you earlier about the iPhone hack to add custom ringtone support to the device, and now we've gone and hacked it ourselves.  The result?  Custom ringtones, but we did screw up our second attempt since we sent an old configuration file to the device.  All in all, we did end up succeeding without further compromising the phone.  Check out the video embedded below:

Custom iPhone ringtone instructions hit the web
Added on 2007-07-13 09:42:00
by Randall Bennett

Yesterday, a YouTube Video of a guy putting a custom ringtone on the iPhone started spreading around the interwebs, and now you too can put your own ringtones on your $600 wonderPhone.  HackTheIphone details a 23 step process for bricking customizing your iPhone.  Fortunately for you adventuresome warriors out there, HackTheiPhone reports everyone who's tried has successfully restored their iPhone using iTunes, so while we can't endorse such wholesome hackery, it might be worth a shot.  We'll try to convince our resident iPhone maven, Alfredo, to let us brick customize his personal iPhone and report back, that is if we can get past his iron-clad grip on his new baby.

Oh yeah, and this hack is for Intel-Mac users only, so if you're wholly subscribed to the gospel of Jobs, or haven't repurchased hardware in the last six months, you're out of luck.

First custom ringtone on the iPhone
Added on 2007-07-12 09:01:00
by Randall Bennett

Looks like someone figured out how to get a custom ringtone on the iPhone, without Apple's help.  The YouTube poster doesn't list any specifics on how he got the old-school office phone ringtone on the phone, but we're guessing it has something to do with everyone figuring out the filesystem hacks.  We've embedded the video after the break, and keep in mind this could just be a hoax.  We'll see when more people start figuring out the hack.

Activate an iPhone without AT&T
Added on 2007-07-04 13:19:00
by Randall Bennett

So if you're feeling the iPhone's touchscreen and internet tablet functionality but don't really like, well, the phone part, look toward DVD Jon's site for a hack to unlock your iPhone without phoning AT&T's servers.  The hack is a basic one, Jon likely activated an iPhone or two and sniffed the packets heading from iTunes to AT&T's activation server.  The result?  He created a fake activation server users can install on their machine, modify some underlying OS files and activate any standard iPhone, for now at least.  Does it work?  We've heard it does, but if you give it a shot, let us know.

[Thanks, Steve!]

iPhone firmware hits the net
Added on 2007-07-02 09:43:00
by Randall Bennett

We told you earlier about how enterprising hackers are trying to unlock and otherwise crack Apple's mighty iPhone, and to that end hackers have released the first firmware image containing the iPhone's OS and other default settings.  Just think, someday the iPhone could support other GSM networks, stereo bluetooth or even install OS level third party applications.  Oh, the possibilities.

Don't expect any of those hacks to come soon, and even when they do come, they'll likely void your warranty.

Hack: Office Suite for Windows Mobile 5 Smartphone
Added on 2007-05-07 13:12:00
by Alfredo Padilla

As longtime users of Windows Mobile know the smartphone edition of Windows Mobile 5 did not include an office suite for editing Word and Excel files. This functionality has been added in Windows Mobile 6 Standard, the successor to Windows Mobile 5 Smartphone. Well, as you would expect an enterprising person(s) has found a way to extract the office suite from the updated version and port it over to the older version. This means that those of you who have a Windows Mobile 5 Smartphone will be able to enjoy file editing on your device. Of course the legality of this is in question, but those who aren't afraid of those pesky lawyers may find this hack to be very useful. If you are worried about pesky lawyers you can add office editing functionality with Documents To Go, a third party software suite.
