by Mark Brezinski
With the recent announcement of the iPhone SDK, unhacked iPhone users are no doubt excited for the bevy of third-party applications that will soon festoon their home screens with little rounded icons. Though it remains to be seen, the SDK has the potential to let the iPhone compete with legitimate business devices, like BlackBerries and Palms. A more interesting question, at least for gaming geeks like us, is whether or not the iPhone could become a good gaming platform.

The iPhone always has its share of detractors and looks like the list is growing. At the CES Travis Boatman, vice president of worldwide studios for Electronic Arts’ mobile division talked about the iPhone and how it impacts gaming. He even calls the iPhone a replacement to the Razr (ouch that got to hurt). Go to Macworld for the full article.
“It’s a replacement for someone who had a Razr before. They still want their content but there’s no distribution platform in place so there’s a negative impact on the industry,” he said.

Lenovo gaming handset back to the future (past) style
Added on 2007-11-17 11:18:00

NES emulators on phones are nothing new, but this is the first time we've seen a handset manufacturer go the extra mile to actually include an emulator AND a detachable controller into a phone. That's what Lenovo's done with it's i909 handset, with a candy bar phone that includes a 2.4 inch screen and a nice controller that snaps right into the phone for your game playing pleasure. All we have to say is me wantie, but alas it's not to be as this bad boy is only going to be released in China. I guess I'll have to go back to figuring out how to use those damnable touch screen controls.

N-Gage to live on as multiplayer gaming service
Added on 2007-08-27 12:38:00
by Mark Brezinski

Nokia's N-Gage was a bad phone and an even worse gaming platform. It quickly became more of a joke than an actual handset, had its 15-minutes of internet fame, and died out within the same week. For some inexplicable reason, Nokia refuses to let the memory of their mistake fade. They're not reviving the N-Gage as an actual platform, but rather as a multiplayer gaming service. The ghost of the N-Gage will haunt many of Nokia's Series 60 devices, starting this fall. Nokia also announced plans to eventually spread the N-Gage to the rest of the series, like some sort of credibility-destroying disease. Features of the new N-Gage include a friends list and a ranking system. These are fairly basic features, but Nokia insisted on citing the inspiration for their inclusion: "one avid female gamer" claimed she didn't like losing to better player online. This may be the first documented incident of anyone ever being dissatisfied with losing in an online game. The Internet was unavailable for comment.
We honestly don't know why Nokia would chose to revive a name that is so rife with negative connotation. The article claims Nokia seeks "redemption." Only time will tell if Nokia vindicates their failure or if N-Gage history will repeat itself a third time.
