iPhone in trouble in France?
Added on 2007-10-05 10:36:00
by Alfredo Padilla

According to French newspaper Les Echos Apple's deal with Orange to release the iPhone in France this year may be in trouble. We've seen reports of troubles before, but their report points to the specific reason for the problem, namely a French law requiring phones to be sold both with and without a contract. This could upset the model Apple has chosen for iPhone distribution that includes Apple receiving a cut of carrier revenues for iPhone users. Many countries in Europe have laws that require phones to be sold unlocked, and as we've seen with the 1.1.1 fiasco Apple does not look kindly upon this. As such France may join a long list of countries in Europe that won't see an iPhone anytime soon.

France nixes govermental use of BlackBerries
Added on 2007-06-20 12:32:00
by Randall Bennett

Ahh, the French.  From the people who brought you the best breakfast toast and those delectable cut up potatoes comes their newest innovation: A healthy dose of nationalistic fear!  The French government says they're planning on canning BlackBerry for governmental use because RIM's servers are located in the US and UK, and they're afraid of prying eyes catching sensitive data.  RIM retorts that their network is so secure the NSA can't crack it, and besides, the BBC reports, some French government workers ignore the ban and use the devices regardless.  We'd think France would be a little nicer to RIM, seeing as the company HQ is in Canada and not the US, but you know, maybe they're just being France.
