Palm Cancels Foleo
Added on 2007-09-04 19:18:00
by Richard Baguley

Foleo, we barely knew thee. Palm has just announced on their official blog that they are canceling the controversial smartphone companion device. Claiming that "Our own evaluation and early market feedback were telling us that we still have a number of improvements to make Foleo a world-class product, and we can not afford to make those improvements on a platform that is not central to our core focus", Palm CEO Ed Colligan made the announcement on the official Palm blog.

The Foleo had been controversial from the start; users were confused as to who the device was aimed at, and how well it would work. Announced in May, it was designed as a companion device to a smartphone, providing a larger keyboard and screen that would be conducive to writing emails and editing documents. But it was widely ridiculed, and Palm seems to have decided that the niche was just too small. Colligan claims that by canceling it now, the company will have spent less than $10 million developing it, and that they are going to continue to consider further products based on the platform: "When we do Foleo II it will be based on our new platform, and we think it will deliver on the promise of this new category. We're not going to speculate now on timing for a next Foleo, we just know we need to get our core platform and smartphones done first."

Foleo delayed claims analyst
Added on 2007-08-23 10:01:00
by Mark Brezinski

In news that's sure to make gadget fans comically double-take at their monitors and perhaps spit out a mouth full of coffee, the Palm Foleo has been delayed. This information comes from a bank analyst, the likes of whom spout tall tales about the iPhone Nano and other such flights of fancy. The Foleo was expected to launch this week, despite Palm not issuing an official release date, but software bugs have held it back. Now the Foleo can be unofficially expected somewhere around the end of September, or beginning of October. Again, however, this could just be pure bank analyst whimsy, given how notoriously whimsical bank analysts tend to be.

NormSoft in a press release announced that is has developed audio software for the Palm Foleo Device. Palm has not developed an audio player for the Foleo and was relying on third party software. NormSoft for now is tight-lipped about the audio player but will demonstrate it at the Linux World Conference & Expo early next month.

Palm Foleo release date on August 22nd?
Added on 2007-07-12 11:50:00
by Randall Bennett

Brighthand is hearing Palm's Foleo will hit on August 22nd from an anonymous source.  We've been debating around the office as to whether anyone really cares about the Foleo, and subsequently which Palm employee would care enough to leak the release date.  We think it's safe to say this is likely a strategic leak to get Palm aficionados to start talking about the device again, but instead of gushing over a platform we're not sure we want, we want to know if you're really interested in the Foleo.

$600 ultra-portable laptop renders Foleo DOA?
Added on 2007-06-05 10:23:00
by Randall Bennett

Obviously laptops, especially ones devoid of 3G connectivity, don't really belong on WirelessInfo, but this one makes a great case against a recent release from the kids at Palm.  VIA is showing off a reference design (pictured right) of an ultra-portable laptop that will retail for $600.  If it shows up at that price point, that makes the Foleo kinda pointless, right?  Make no mistake, the device is a little under powered but still has all the essentials, including WiFi, Bluetooth, a 30GB hard drive and 1GB of RAM.  Peter at Engadget says we'll see the device in Europe later this year, and VIA tells Pete that one other OEM is also going to license the device, but VIA wouldn't say who.

If that second OEM is a US-based OEM, it essentially renders the Folio DOA. For $600, you could get this laptop, an eight gig iPhone or buy the Foleo: a device thats less than a laptop, but doesn't include any sort of phone functionality.  We don't know about all of you, but we're leaning toward choice one or two.  Sorry Palm, back to the drawing board.
