BlackBerry Curve 8330 announced for Verizon
Added on 2008-03-31 08:18:00
by Mark Brezinski
Today Verizon and RIM have announced their bouncing baby 8330 to the world. This new version of the curve will have no wi-fi capabilities, but will feature GPS via VZ Navigator. Other than this itty-bitty switch-p, the 8330 is basically the same as the 8320. It has the same dimensions, the same 2.0-Megapixel camera, and the same look. The only uncertainty is the degree to which Verizon will white-wash the BlackBerry OS with bright red VZ-branded garbage. The phone will cost $269.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate, and an additional $100 will get knocked off provided you sign up with a specific plan.
If you want to see more specs, head to the press release and scroll down to the bulleted list.

Curve to hit T-Mobile on September 23rd?
Added on 2007-08-14 13:56:00
by Randall Bennett

AT&T may have gotten first crack at the Curve, but T-Mobile has always had a pretty good relationship with RIM, and now a MyFaves compatible BlackBerry Curve is set to hit T-Mobile on September 24th, according to some rumors sent into the Boy Genius Report. The release date is great and everything, but the feature list adds WiFi and UMA support to the Curve, making it perfect for T-Mobile@Home users. Other notable features, like a two-megapixel camera, microSD and BlackBerry's notably great QWERTY keyboard, are still there. We're extremely excited about the prospects of a WiFi enabled BlackBerry, and a UMA supporting smartphone, although without a proper price, we'll still have to wait and see if it replaces our regular phone.

Dial 0 for Opinion: the BlackBerry Curve wants you to be late
Added on 2007-08-09 14:15:00
by Mark Brezinski
The Curve represents BlackBerry's first foray into the market of "phones that are totally indifferent toward their users and users' schedules." As BlackBerry's pitch for the bargain bin smart phone market, the Curve is marketed toward business users who need robust e-mail and organization software. Ironically, the hectic lives the Curve was made for are the very ones it will fail the most, because the alert function doesn't alert you very well. Our full review of the Curve is coming shortly, but there was one thing that disappointed me; the alert functionality. It wasn't the bevy of customizable options that was disappointing; it was the Curve's inability to literally get the user's attention.

Non-iPhone visual voicemail
Added on 2007-06-27 10:03:00
by Randall Bennett
Looks like the iPhone's "Visual Voicemail" killer app might not be an iPhone exclusive anymore, as SimulSays hit beta today for BlackBerry. The press release is scant on specific details, but it sounds like users can download an app for their BlackBerry and then are able to see who left a voicemail through caller ID, then be able to return the call or send back an email using the BlackBerry. Right now the app is only specified to work with the BlackBerry Pearl, 8800, and Curve, but the company says a Windows Mobile version is coming sometime later today. We're interested in how the product works, and are going to give it a shot on one of our Pearls lying around the office.
Update: Just gave the service a run-through, and it would be a welcome addition to the BlackBerry, except your voicemail callers have to listen to an ad that says, "this call will be transcribed through simulscribe.com," every time they leave a voicemail. It'd be fine, except it feels like a disclaimer, which scared one of our voicemailers.
Also, cellphone users might feel weird about having to set up conditional call forwarding and using a third-party voicemail system. It's pretty simple to activate -- users of SimulSays need simply to enter in *004*4435520548*11# to activate the service -- but the idea of someone other than a mobile provider having voicemail might be touchy for some.
However, those two caveats aside, we kind of dig the service. It's simple to use and acts as a secondary call log when your phone isn't on, plus you won't use up talk-time minutes when listening to voicemail. I just installed this on my personal phone, and I think despite the annoying ad, I'll leave it on for the convenience factor.
