Sony-Ericsson W890i with US 3G?
Added on 2007-10-18 15:50:00
by Alfredo Padilla

Is it possible that Sony-Ericsson might be prepping one of its popular Walkman branded handsets for AT&T's 3G network? The spec sheet at left (click for larger version) seems to indicate that it might, as it shows the W890i supporting the 850 Mhz band for 3G. We should be cautious though as there's no work about corresponding 1900 Mhz support, on which most of AT&T's 3G network is deployed. We should also note that Australia uses the 850 Mhz band for 3G, so this might just be about giving the Aussies some 3G action rather than Americans. Still, we can't say that we would mind if Sony-Ericsson does decide to send some 3G love our way. There's a lot to like about their Walkman lineup, as you can see in our W580i review.

The rest of Sony Ericsson's phones
Added on 2007-06-14 14:41:00
by Randall Bennett

We've been waiting, and waiting, and waiting for some extra details on Sony Ericsson's new phone lineup, and finally they're official. Of course, there's the K850 (pictured, third from left) we wrote about earlier, but there's also some information on the two new Walkman phones to the party, the W910 and W960.

The W960 rocks a full 8GB of onboard storage (like some other music-phone we keep hearing about,) a 3.2 megapixel camera and a touchscreen. The W910 (pictured, first from left) doesn't have any crazy onboard storage, but does have a two megapixel cam, requisite A2DP support and will come in both black and red colors.

All three phones feature the aforementioned Gracenote technology for song identification, ala Verizon's VCast implementation for which you might be seeing ads.   Sony Ericsson also announced two phones that won't be crawling onto US shores, the K530 (fourth from left,) a less interesting 3G candybar phone, and the uber low-end Z250 flip phone (pictured second from left.)  All of the phones and watches from Sony Ericsson will be released toward the end of 2007.

Sony Ericsson phones soft-announced
Added on 2007-06-14 08:26:00
by Randall Bennett

OOooops.... Gracenote unintentionally stole Sony Ericsson's thunder and went ahead and announced their music service will be available on two new Walkman phones, the W910 and W960, and the K850 Cyber-shot.  D'oh.  We're not sure if it's RCRWireless's fault for publishing the story early, Gracenote's fault for not making the embargo more clear or what, but regardless we'll have more on the three new phones (and maybe even some watches) from Sony Ericsson later today.

Sony Ericsson W580i Approved by FCC
Added on 2007-06-01 15:14:00
by Alfredo Padilla

Well, it looks like the FCC is on a Sony Ericsson kick today as they've already approved the P1 and now they've approved the W580i. A walkman branded quad-band phone the W580i sports EDGE, 2 megapixel camera and A2DP support for stereo bluetooth headphones. As a quad band device there's a chance that this phone might be coming to the U.S., but we've heard no rumors that it will be picked up by AT&T or T-Mobile. With the upcoming release of the iPhone we certainly would like to see some more Walkman branded phones on shelves to provide a little bit of competition. Links after the jump.

Sony Ericsson W660i Gets FCC Approval
Added on 2007-05-29 15:15:00
by Alfredo Padilla

Not that we'll be seeing this tri-band handset here in the United States anytime soon, but the FCC just gave its stamp of approval to Sony's latest Walkman branded phone. Somewhat reminiscent of the w810 carried by AT&T, the sports a 2 megapixel camera, expandable memory via Memory Stick Micro and 3G for those overseas. It also support FM Radio, which is fast becoming a standard feature overseas. Considering that this is a mid level handset in most markets, we are again forced to ask, why don't we get the cool stuff? Of course we're getting the iPhone first, so maybe we should eat our words. Still, we wouldn't mind seeing a few more Walkman branded handsets to compete with the iPhone here. And while we're at it, lets get some Cybershot branded phones here too. For those geeky enough to want it links to the FCC documentation after the jump.

Sony-Ericsson Working on a New Feature Packed Walkman Phone?
Added on 2007-04-19 21:13:00
by Rusty Weiss

Sony-Ericsson may have leaked photos of a new line of walkman phone, jammed with as many cool features as possible.

The W999i slider phone is said to come with 3G capabilities, a NetFront browser,  and 2-megapixel rear camera.

The design appears to be a melting pot of previous walkman phones, and a very sharp look is the result.

The photo has the feel of a company product shot, but remains just a rumor for the time being. We’ll keep you posted if anything official is announced.
