BlackBerry users can make free or cheap international calls thanks to a new voice over IP application introduced by Raketu. Calling it a “Skype-like service”, Raketu has set up "free calling zones" in over 40 countries where one can make free calls.One can also make cheap international calls in locations not covered in the free zone. Vonage to Pay $120 Million to Verizon

Vonage Holdings Corp has been ordered to pay $120 million to Verizon Communications Inc. after a U.S. appeals court refused to reconsider the case.Vonage had asked the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit to review its ruling but they denied the request.
“We were not surprised, but disappointed that the court denied our request for a rehearing of the case,'' Vonage spokesman Charlie Sahner said in an e-mailed statement. ``We are pleased to continue putting litigation behind us.''

T-Mobile Prepares to Roll Out National Wi-Fi Calling

T-Mobile has been testing a new services that uses both a cellular network and VOIP via Wi-Fi to make calls. The service is supposed to allow individuals to easily and automatically switch between the two networks when using specially equipped handsets. According to the Wall Street Journal this service will be rolled out nationally by June. More after the jump.

Orange & Vodafone Let Go Of VoIP In Nokia N95

Hate to be the messenger of doom (god I'm dramatic) but both Orange and Vodafone in the UK have decided to disable the internet telephony option in Nokia N95!
A Nokia spokeswoman was heard saying: "This a handset-specific issue," she said. "In this particular instance Orange was asked by Nokia whether they wanted the functionality switched on or off, and Orange selected off."

Mexico City Mulls Citywide Wi-Fi

One of the world’s largest cities is one giant step closer to building one of the world’s largest citywide Wi-Fi networks, according to Mobile Tech Today.
Mexico City, with its 8.7 million residents, has contracted with ZTE Corp. of Shenzhen, China to create Wi-Fi hot spots that would connect government offices, schools and the city’s network of surveillance cameras.

Court Decision Would Block Vonage Calls to Landlines

Possible bad news for Vonage customers: Your ability to make calls to conventional phones might be suspended in two weeks. A federal judge in Alexandria, Virginia has ordered Vonage Holdings Corp. to stop using technology patented by Verizon Communications Inc. to complete VOIP calls to landline phones. However the judge delayed enforcement of the order pending another court hearing in two weeks.

EarthLink Offers Peek at Wi-Fi Phone Beta

EarthLink Inc., which is building a citywide Wi-Fi network in Anaheim, Calif., has shown off a prototype of a Wi-Fi telephone handset for use with its PeoplePC Wi-Fi Service. The service is currently available only in Anaheim and in parts of Philadelphia, PA.
According to Engadget, the VOIP handset would be built by Accton Technology Corp. of Taiwan.

At CeBIT 2007 in Hannover, Germany, Vodafone Group Plc showed off a new technology that would allow cell phone users to connect with users of Internet phone services such as Skype. Mobile phone users would be able to see if their Internet phone contacts were online and connect with them instantly.

Vonage Holdings Corp. and Motorola Inc. announced a new wireless router which gives preference to voice traffic, thus protecting the quality of phone calls while others are surfing the Internet or performing other tasks on the same connection. The Motorola VT2542 Internet Phone Adapter & Wireless Router features “voice-over-data prioritization,” which means that voice traffic is always given priority should your network connection get busy.

Vonage found guilty

On Friday a judge in Virginia ordered Vonage to pay Verizon $58 million dollars for infringing on three of their VOIP patents. Verizon had originally sued Vonage for infringing on seven of their patents, and the company was found guilty on only three a claimed victory for both Verizon and Vonage.
