The Asus M930W Communicator  may just be designated as the poor man’s Nokia E90.  Running on a Marvel PXA270M 520 MHz processor and WM6 OS, the M930W will be released in January 2008.

The Triband GSM (900/1800/1900) handset includes support for GPRS, EDGE, UMTS (2100 MHz) and Wi-Fi b/g.  Bluetooth 2.0 +EDR and a MicroSDHC memory card slot are some other features found on the M930W.

T-Mobile releases Nokia 6263 with 3G support

Looks like T-Mobile is starting to build up its 3G line up as the Nokia 6263 is the latest handset to support their UMTS network on the 1700 and 2100 Mhz bands. There's no word on how wide-spread T-Mobile's 3G network is yet, but we're sure they're going to be working overtime to expand coverage as much as quickly as possible so they can compete with Verizon, Sprint and AT&T on a more equal footing. The 6263 is a pretty vanilla handset, just a basic flip phone with a 1.3 megapixel camera and support for SDHC Micro SD cards up to 4GB.

Sony Ericsson intros K770 CyberShot

While we're not really feeling too many chocolate brown devices, but  Sony Ericsson's K770 might slip by our chocolate brown hate detection as the recently announced 3.2 megapixel camera balances out our normal distaste for deep brown. Other than the color and camera, the phone has a pretty face and doesn't sacrifice too many specs. The sort of things we've come to expect from a higher-end phone, like 3G over UMTS, 320 x 240 screen, and A2DP for Stereo Bluetooth are all there, but there's some other things that we've come to expect from Sony, like MemoryStick Micro, that are also present. Other than the less-than-desirable memory card format, we're feeling this phone, and since it comes in more than the Chocolate Brown, which seems to be SE's favorite phone to show off, we're a little more excited. All that excitement, though, is for naught, since US residents won't likely see the phone any time soon with that UMTS 3G radio on European bands. Here's hoping Sony Ericsson stops ignoring US consumers, and actually releases a phone we'd like.

LG's "Fatty Chocolate" hits Europeans today
Added on 2007-06-20 15:55:00

LG's Chocolate is a pretty successful device in the US, and it looks like LG's design team is going pull a MotoRAZR on us and implement the design cues in a variety of devices.  LG's KU850 hits Europe today with a bit wider form-factor.  The phone embraces some extra width and loses some depth (we're talking size wise, not feature wise) and puts an interesting twist on the Chocolate design framework.  The "fatty Chocolate," as cell phone geeks are dubbing the phone, sports Bluetooth 2.0, a 2 megapixel cam, a forward facing cam for video conferencing action, MicroSD and requisite HSDPA.  Sounds pricey, but fun.

We've heard many-a Chocolate owner decry the touch sensitive send/end buttons on the face of the device, and looks like LG didn't listen for the KU850, but if some spy pics posted over at Engadget Mobile for the VX8550 are any indication, future implementations of the Chocolate look should move the send/end buttons into a less accident-prone place.

Alcatel-Lucent and Manx Telecom Announce the First UMTS/HSDPA 900 MHz Deployment on the Isle of Man
Added on 2007-03-18 13:46:00
by Brenda Keener

Manx Telecom, a wholly owned subsidiary of O2 and Alcatel-Lucent announced today that a series of field trials have culminated in the first ever successful deployment of third generation UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) and HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) ove the 900 MHz spectrum in the Isle of Man.  It replaces both the fixed line network as well as the traditional backhaul for Manx/O2.

Both companies leveraged the lower frequency and used Alcatel/Lucent's UMTS/HSDPA base station products to achieve this deployment.  This lower frequency provides an important increase in base station coverage, reducing the number of sites needed to provide rural coverage.  Per Webwire, this trial showed that this technology decreased number of required sites by 60%, and improved signal penetration indoors by 30% as compared to 2100 MHz technology.

Also of significance is that this technology will allow incumbent GSM providers to reuse sites for UMTS without having to do a complete redesign of the network.  This should speed rollout of 3G technology in other areas.
