O2 and Carphone Warehouse have slashed the price of the 8GB iPhone, which is now available for £69 till June 1. This £100 price cut is mainly due to the expected new model of the iPhone that supports 3G.
"More and more this is starting to look like they want to clear stock of an older model, with a looming revision to the iPhone which will likely include 3G," CCS Insight analyst Ben Wood told Reuters

In-Flight Mobile Use a Step Closer
Added on 2008-04-08 04:32:00
by Tanya Palta
Looks like In-flight mobile is no longer a distant dream as European Commission has paved the way for in-flight mobile phone use across Europe. The Commission is encouraging airlines and phone operators to "create the right conditions" which are non-intrusive and don’t disturb the other passengers.
“Pan-European telecom services, such as in-flight mobile telephony, need a regulatory one-stop shop to operate throughout Europe and this is why the Commission has acted today," said EU Telecoms Commissioner Viviane Reding.
"Now we expect operators to be transparent about their prices. In-flight mobile phone services can be a very interesting new service, especially for business travelers needing to communicate wherever they are. However, if consumers receive shock phone bills, the service will not take off."

The UK plans to allow airline passengers to make calls on their mobile phones during flight using an on-board cellular base station. The station will ensure handsets don’t communicate with ground towers and interfere with the planes avionics. Calls will be allowed once a plane reaches 3,000 feet and will be prohibited during take-off and landing.

by Tanya Palta
British Mobile Giants, T-Mobile UK and 3 UK recently announced their plans to combine their 3G networks. With this partnership, T-Mobile UK and 3 UK will not only bring down operational costs considerably but will also become the largest Hsdpa network in Europe.
"Everybody in Europe will be watching to see if this works," said Steven Hartley, a senior analyst in London for Ovum, a consultancy whose clients include Deutsche Telekom, the parent company of T-Mobile. "If they can make this work as fast as they say they will, you'll see a flurry of these agreements in 2008 or the year after."

UK drivers can earn prison time for talking on their cells

The charge for driving while using a mobile phone in the UK has risen from “Careless Driving” to “Reckless Driving.” While the previous charge could usually be taken care of with a fine or community service a dangerous driving charge can earn an offender up to 2 years in prison. Citizens who cause death in an accident while using their mobile can also now be convicted of manslaughter charges, which can carry a term of life in prison.

iPhone European Launch Lackluster?
Added on 2007-11-09 13:19:00
by Alfredo Padilla
The iPhone was launched in Europe and Germany today to what seems like much less fanfare than accompanied the US launch of the phone over four months ago. Lines in the UK and Germany were much smaller than were seen in in the US while T-Mobile Germany reported selling only 10,000 phones, far less than the 270,000 that Apple reported was sold in the first day in the United States. We've previously reported about reasons why the iPhone may not be as popular in the much more sophisticated mobile phone markets in the Europe, starting with the price. Why would you pay over $500 for an iPhone and get locked into a contract when you can pick up an N95 for close to free with the same contract? Of course it should also be noted that the UK and Germany together are about half the size of the US market.

Only 1 percent of people in UK want an iPhone
Added on 2007-10-25 15:05:00
by Alfredo Padilla
It seems like the iPhone may not fare as well on the other side of the Pond as Apple might hope. According to the Telegraph a survey done by YouGov found that a quarter of respondents expressed interest in the iPhone when asked initially, but that number quickly dropped to 1 percent when they were made aware of the iPhone's cost, £269 up front and at least £35 a month afterwards for 18 months. It's not surprising that in a country where you can pick up Nokia's N95 uber-phone for free with a contract some Brits might balk at dishing out a boat load of cash for a phone with a slimmer feature set. We're very curious to see how the iPhone does in Europe where the marketplace is a bit more savvy when it comes to high end phones. Most consumers in Europe would expect to get a high end smart phone that comes unlocked for £269. It's entirely possible they might punish the iPhone for asking too much for a handset that lacks 3G, has only a 2 megapixel camera and won't be able to support third party apps until early next year.

No cell means poverty
Added on 2007-09-19 14:46:00
by Mark Brezinski
|
This week on "Polls with Unnecessarily Vague Demographics," we spotlight a new survey conducted by Dare to Care, a volunteer-based movement that aims to rid the world of child poverty. Their survey discovered that nearly 50% of children in "some parts" of the UK felt not having a cell phone was an indication of poverty. We're not surprised to see such results, given how popular cell phones are these days. We were, however, surprised the results were apparently so sparse that Dare to Care had to resort to such nebulous language. Normally when groups are pushing agendas they don't have to break out the ambiguous language until they try to claim something absurd, such as claiming that the Mad Cow outbreak in the US was an epidemic (less than 200 cases in the States total), or stating, "90% of some animals will become 60% extinct unless you give us 100% of $200!"

Hands On With The UK O2 iPhone
Added on 2007-09-18 10:09:00
by Richard Baguley
Engadget got some hands-on time with the new UK iPhone running on O2's network, and the differences between it and the US version look to be pretty minimal: There's an option for European languages (presumably the same phone will be sold through the various rumored European carriers), the ability to switch the roaming carrier and the iTunes WiFi music store comes pre-installed. But perhaps the most interesting difference shows in this shot that Conrad Quilty-Harper took of the O2 phone next to his unlocked phone on T-Mobile; we've zoomed in on the carrier logos. The O2 phone is browsing at GPRS speeds (a maximum of 14.4kbps, while the T-Mobile iPhone is running on EDGE). As he wryly puts it: “O2's EDGE coverage sucks”; the company only claims to have 30% of the UK covered. We browsing is already slow over EDGE; I hate to think what's it's going to be like over the GPRS coverage the O2 will be offering iPhone users over the rest of their network...

iPhone Launches in UK for £269
Added on 2007-09-18 04:09:00
by Richard Baguley
At an event in London this morning, Apple head Steve Jobs announced the first foreign version of the iPhone. Running on the O2 network, the UK iPhone will cost £269 (approx $530). It will go on sale on the 9th of November. The UK iPhone will have the same memory capacity (8GB) and EDGE data support as the US version. The UK calling plans will cost £35, $45 and $55, and all will include unlimited data and visual voicemail. They will also include roaming onto the Cloud WiFi network that includes 7,500 Wifi hotspots. The required contract will be for 18 months. O2's iPhone page is here, and Apple UK has a new page on the iPhone in their store here.
Interestingly enough, O2 also offers the Nokia N95, but that is free if you sign up for a £30 a month, 18 month contract. So this provides an serious choice for UK customers: a free N95 at £30 , or a £269 iPhone at $35...

850,000 phones meet death by toilet yearly in the UK
Added on 2007-06-04 13:36:00
by Randall Bennett
One or two of us have regrettably lost phones in a place or two (I myself lost a Treo 650 and a Cingular 8125 within the first four months of last year) but our friends across the pond literally flush an astounding 850,000 phones down the crapper each year.
850,000. Down the toilet.
Research by SimplySwitch, a company specializing in price comparison and switching carriers, found 4.5 million handsets are lost or damaged in the UK each year. Second to the death by watery grave, 810,000 handsets end up amongst the peanuts and broken hearts at a local pub, 315,000 stay behind for an extra long cab ride, 225,000 keep riding public transportation after their owners leave and 116,000 ended up in some dirty laundry.
Interesting stats, and sure, the stats aren't from a hugely reputable source, but seriously, take care of your phone.
