Talking iPhone: One step forward, two steps back

Now that we've put about a day between ourselves and the ridiculous hype surrounding any Steve Jobs keynote address we can take a step back and consider what was revealed at yesterday's World Wide Developer Conference. Our first impressions are: eh. The addition of 3G and GPS to the iPhone have long been expected, and frankly we were hoping for more. Still, an upgrade is an upgrade and the price cut certainly sweetens the pot. Of course what Apple giveth with one hand AT&T taketh with the other.

Monday's the big day (we hope) the day when Steve Jobs will take the stage at Apple's World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) and reveal what's in store for the next generation iPhone. The rumors have been flying hot and heavy for the past month, but what are we really going to see on Monday? Here's our list, sorted by likelihood.

Talking iPhone: Faster browsing on Edge
Added on 2008-04-21 13:03:00

Despite Steve Job’s talk of the “real” internet on your phone and disparagement of the mobile web, the reality is that there are reasons the mobile web exists. The first is the challenge of fitting the content of a full web page onto the small displays found on mobile devices. The second is the challenge of moving the large amounts of data found on many complicated sites over relatively slow mobile data connections. Although Apple has largely solved the first problem with mobile Safari’s ability to zoom into the area of the page you want, the second is still a challenge for iPhone (review) owners browsing on the slow EDGE data connection. Today we’ll be looking at some strategies that will significantly speed up your mobile browsing when using the EDGE network.

Talking iPhone: The next generation

As you may have noticed in the past week there has been a cacophony of rumors about the updated version of the iPhone (review). Not only did AT&T's CEO hint at it obliquely by stating that their entire lineup of smart phones would be 3G in a matter of months, but luminaries like Walt Mossberg are also fairly convinced that this will be happening. Of course the feature that everyone is focused on is support for high speed 3G networks. As you may have gathered from our recent article on why 3G sucks this isn't exactly a compelling update for us, but there are a lot of other hardware changes we'd like to see on the iPhone that we'll be taking a look at today.

Talking iPhone: Synchronizing third party applications
Added on 2008-03-31 13:38:00

One of the problems that many iPhone (review) developers may run into is the lack of any sort of conduit between a third party application and your desktop. Unlike some smart phone platforms like Windows Mobile where developers can build synchronization with the desktop into their ActiveSync software it does not seem like this capability will be available via iTunes synchronization on the iPhone. This is a particular problem for developers that want to create software that naturally synchronizes with a desktop application like finance software or task management tools.

Talking iPhone: What applications won't be allowed?

With the iPhone SDK out now the dreams of many software developers and companies are running into the wall of limitations that come with the SDK. Most recently was Adobe, which initially indicated they would be developing a Flash plugin for the iPhone but then retracted their statement. Sun has also announced that they will be developing a Java client for the iPhone, but may find their hopes dashed by the fact that the SDK user agreement does not allow you to create applications that execute additional code. Today we're going to be taking a close look at the type of applications that won't be allowed on the iPhone by taking examples from other smart phone platforms.

Talking iPhone: will it be a good gaming platform?

With the recent announcement of the iPhone SDK, unhacked iPhone users are no doubt excited for the bevy of third-party applications that will soon festoon their home screens with little rounded icons. Though it remains to be seen, the SDK has the potential to let the iPhone compete with legitimate business devices, like BlackBerries and Palms. A more interesting question, at least for gaming geeks like us, is whether or not the iPhone could become a good gaming platform.

Talking iPhone: Where will the SDK take us?

by Alfredo Padilla

Apple has an event tomorrow focused on the "iPhone software roadmap", which we tend to believe means that we'll finally get some information about the long awaited iPhone (read review) Software Development Kit (SDK), which will finally allow third parties to develop software for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Unfortunately it looks like there might be a lot of disappointments in the offing both in terms of the expected timeline and the final product. Today we're going to look at what the possibilities are and how they might impact iPhone users.
