MySpace to offer web-based, DRM-free music downloads
Added on 2008-04-03 14:56:00
by Mark Brezinski
In an interesting move, Sony, Universal, Warner, and MySpace have all decided to pitch in and create MySpace Music, which will be like a web-based, DRM-free version of iTunes. Though details are still a bit vague, this service should give mobile users an alternative to the overpriced , DRM-infested music downloads offered by most carriers' music stores. If anything, it should spur carriers towards being more competitive with their own offerings.
You can read more in Warner's press release.

Sony-Ericsson at CTIA 2008: oldies but goodies
Added on 2008-04-02 21:33:00
by Alfredo Padilla
Since there's not a lot of new stuff going down at CTIA 2008 this year we thought we'd run out and grab some photos of phones that have been announced but we haven't got a chance to play with hands on yet. In the Sony-Ericsson booth we grabbled the C902 cybershot candybar with a five megapixel camera. Next up is the W980, a flip that reproduces Sony-Ericsson's excellent Walkman software on the exterior of the phone. Last, but not least, is the K850, a 3.2 megapixel Cybershot phone that's been rumored to be coming to AT&T forever. We have to admit that we're getting a little impatient to get some of these devices to U.S. shores. We haven't had a chance to do a full review on many Sony-Ericsson phones but those we have, or, one, the W580i (review), have impressed us. Photos after the jump.

Sony Ericsson z555 hits FCC
Added on 2008-03-10 09:12:00
by Mark Brezinski
The z555, which we initially covered way back at CES, has just hit the FCC for approval. Assuming not much has changed since we last saw it, the z555 is a basic Sony Ericsson handset with a very pretty case (at least it was at the show; the picture at right is more of a mug shot than a vanity photo).
The front of the phone features a really cool OLED display that is embedded in the case. Looking at the front, if the OLEDs aren't lit up, you'd never guess they were there. Also, the z555 has an accelerometer so it can pull the typical Sony Ericsson tricks, such as shaking the phone to mute a call, or playing the role of a pedometer.

There are some whispers about a new K850i Quicksilver Black cellphone on the horizon. Unfortunately the changes would just be cosmetic as only the trimmings will change from Luminous Green and Velvet Blue to a more staid silver.

CES 2008: Conclusions
Added on 2008-01-14 08:01:00
by Mark Brezinski
So we're all back from CES, and we can definitively say it wasn't the best show for cell phones. We knew it wouldn't be CIAA, but the sheer dearth of anything interesting was a bit surprising. We made video previews for a few interesting handsets: Sony Ericcson's w760 and w350, Motorola's Z10 and ROKR E8, and Samsung's Serenata. We've written First Impression reviews on three of these: ROKR E8, Serenata, Z10. We'll be posting a First Impression review on the w760 soon as well.
Cell phones were certainly much bigger players at CES in the past. Why was there such a poor showing this year? Honestly, we think niche-oriented shows, such as CTIA or 3GSM, are the reason. With a huge show like CES that covers so many different fields of electronics, it's easy for smaller, more finesse-oriented gadgets to get lost in the shadows of the 150" plasma TVs and the giant trucks that are 65% speakers. CES seems to be more about flashy hardware than great software; it's hard for a tiny brick with a 2-3" screen to pull many eyes away from the grandeur of the rest of the show. We think the fear of being lost in the shuffle is causing cell phone manufacturers to stay away from general electronics shows, concentrating instead on niche shows like CTIA. When you only have other phones to compete against and all the press is there specifically for cell phones, your handset has a much better chance of getting noticed.
We'll be at the next CTIA, checking out all the phones that were too skittish to show up at CES.

Unrequited Love: Sony Ericcson P1i
Added on 2007-08-03 12:32:00
by Randall Bennett
The P1i knows how to turn some heads, and with specs like a 3.2 megapixel camera, and a sure-type keyboard, who wouldn't want the phone? Unfortunately for residents of the US, Sony Ericcson unleashed the P1i sans GSM 850 support, which essentially dooms it from the inside out. We picked it as our first Unrequited Love, so here's hoping Sony Ericcson will throw US residents a bone, and actually give us a phone we like.

The rest of Sony Ericsson's phones
Added on 2007-06-14 14:41:00
by Randall Bennett

We've been waiting, and waiting, and waiting for some extra details on Sony Ericsson's new phone lineup, and finally they're official. Of course, there's the K850 (pictured, third from left) we wrote about earlier, but there's also some information on the two new Walkman phones to the party, the W910 and W960.
The W960 rocks a full 8GB of onboard storage (like some other music-phone we keep hearing about,) a 3.2 megapixel camera and a touchscreen. The W910 (pictured, first from left) doesn't have any crazy onboard storage, but does have a two megapixel cam, requisite A2DP support and will come in both black and red colors.
All three phones feature the aforementioned Gracenote technology for song identification, ala Verizon's VCast implementation for which you might be seeing ads. Sony Ericsson also announced two phones that won't be crawling onto US shores, the K530 (fourth from left,) a less interesting 3G candybar phone, and the uber low-end Z250 flip phone (pictured second from left.) All of the phones and watches from Sony Ericsson will be released toward the end of 2007.

Sony Ericsson's K850 gets official
Added on 2007-06-14 12:48:00
by Randall Bennett
Sony Ericsson didn't disappoint, as the K850 is official. The five megapixel camera sports a 2.2 inch LCD, some auto focusing Carl Zeiss optics, and a Xenon flash, but also has some interesting non-camera centric features, like support for push email. External storage is in the form of MemoryStick Micro M2 as well as MicroSD, so you're not locked in to MemoryStick, bucking Sony tradition.
Looking for some shots of the device? Gizmodo got some hands-on shots of the phone (pictured right,) and other than the itty bitty keys that don't look too comfortable, the phone looks like a solid device. We'll reserve judgment though, till we get it in our own hands.

Answer your cell with your TV?
Added on 2007-03-25 15:32:00
by Emily Price
Sony Ericsson has reportedly filed a patent with the US Patent and Trademark Office for technology that would allow you to route cell phone calls through your television set using your TV as a hands-free device for our cell. "The television receives a call notification from the cellular telephone over a short-range wireless interface. Responsive to this call notification, the television controls at least one of an audio output and a video output to notify the user of the incoming call. When the user activates a control button associated with the television, the wireless network establishes a voice communication session. During the voice communication session, the cellular telephone routes call audio signals between the television and the wireless network."
No word on when or if you'll be seeing this in a living room near you.
