First Call: Sony-Ericsson z750 for AT&T

The Sony-Ericsson z750 for AT&T is next up on our review plate. This entry-level flip phone is one of the few Sony-Ericsson devices available from a U.S. carrier. The phone sports a mirrored exterior with an OLED display, which gives you a cool effect, but also has a little issue in that the light from the display gets reflected by the mirrored finish. It's your call whether the 3D effect that ensues is cool or annoying.
Under the hood the z750 runs the same Sony-Ericsson interface we've seen on other devices like the w580i (review) with a few small tweaks. The default theme is more polished than what we saw on the w580i, with smoother transitions and effects. The phone is not branded as a Walkman device, Sony-Ericsson's line of music oriented phones, but the music software seemed similar, and perhaps even slightly improved over what we saw on the w580i.
The phone isn't a super slim flip phone like the Razr. It's not exactly sexy, but it doesn't lack some style, especially with the mirrored exterior. The specs are solid for an entry level handset, there's a two megapixel camera, support for AT&T's 3G network and international 3G networks and expandable memory via Sony's proprietary Memory Stick Micro cards. One interesting item on the spec sheet is the 9 hours of claimed talk time. For a 3G device, which generally tend to be very power hungry, this would be remarkable. We'll see if it holds up when we test it.
Lots of pretty pictures after the break. Check back for our full review late next week.

Sony-Ericsson Xperia X1 Video Preview
Added on 2008-04-02 01:08:00

Even though the Xperia X1 was announced almost two months ago at Mobile World Congress we, alas, were not in attendance so we were duly enthused to take our first look at the device at the Mobile Focus event tonight at CTIA 2008. The hardware felt solid and although the Panel interface overlay was interesting we couldn't make any final judgement as the device we looked at was pre-production. It should be available sometime in the second half of 2008 for an undisclosed sum, we recommend you start saving now. Video after the break.

Looks like some information about Sony-Ericsson's CES lineup has been released. There's not a lot to go on except a few photos but it looks like some stylish clamshells including the W760i, Z555i and W350i are in the pipeline. We'll see if this comes true soon enough. More pics are available here.

Sony-Ericsson W890i with US 3G?
Added on 2007-10-18 15:50:00
by Alfredo Padilla
Is it possible that Sony-Ericsson might be prepping one of its popular Walkman branded handsets for AT&T's 3G network? The spec sheet at left (click for larger version) seems to indicate that it might, as it shows the W890i supporting the 850 Mhz band for 3G. We should be cautious though as there's no work about corresponding 1900 Mhz support, on which most of AT&T's 3G network is deployed. We should also note that Australia uses the 850 Mhz band for 3G, so this might just be about giving the Aussies some 3G action rather than Americans. Still, we can't say that we would mind if Sony-Ericsson does decide to send some 3G love our way. There's a lot to like about their Walkman lineup, as you can see in our W580i review.

Sony Ericsson Reveals the P1
Added on 2007-05-08 14:08:00
by Alfredo Padilla
Sony Ericsson today took the wraps off their latest P-Series handset, the P1. The successor to the P990, the P1 slims down, loses the flip and ups the camera to 3.2 megapixels, amongst a range of other upgrades. Unfortunately the upgrade U.S. users were looking for is not here as the P1 lacks the 850 Mhz GSM band and doesn't support AT&T's 3G network. Full specs and a couple more pics after the jump.
