Added on 2008-03-21 10:10:00
by Alfredo Padilla
With the iPhone SDK out now the dreams of many software developers and companies are running into the wall of limitations that come with the SDK. Most recently was Adobe, which initially indicated they would be developing a Flash plugin for the iPhone but then retracted their statement. Sun has also announced that they will be developing a Java client for the iPhone, but may find their hopes dashed by the fact that the SDK user agreement does not allow you to create applications that execute additional code. Today we're going to be taking a close look at the type of applications that won't be allowed on the iPhone by taking examples from other smart phone platforms.

Apple iPhone Will Run 3rd Party Apps Through The Web
Added on 2007-06-11 13:15:00
by Randall Bennett
At the Apple developers conference in San Francisco, Apple CEO Steve Jobs revealed how the iPhone will run applications from third party developers; they will run inside the Safari web browser application. Rather than provide developers access to the cut-down version of the Mac OS that the iPhone uses, Apple is asking developers to write applications that use Web 2.0 and AJAX technologies. At the conference, they demoed a directory application that showed off what it can do to good effect: from the application, the iPhone could make calls, access google maps and even download and display PDFs.
The upside of this is that developers will be able to write applications in advance; tey can test most of the functions of the software in the version of the Safari Web browser app that runs on MacOS X. And it solves the problem of distribution; as apps are basically web apges, they can be accessed by just starting the browser.
The downside is that this approach does not provide full access to the iPhone. Although Apple VP Scott Forstall demoed the directory application that Apple had produced, they didn’t describe if there is any way for an application to render graphics beyond a web page that displays in the browser. This limitation may prove to be an achilles heel; is there any way for the iPhone to run graphical games, for instance?

Nokia's new software simplifies Mac syncing
Added on 2007-06-08 10:23:00
by Randall Bennett
Nokia has made some real progress with their new sync software for Mac, Nokia Media Transfer 1.0. Ridiculously boring name aside, the software is actually pretty amazing and makes syncing between your Nokia phone and iTunes and iPhoto a snap. The software creates a new folder iCon (sorry, we had to) in both iTunes and iPhoto. Then, drag your fav playlists and photo albums into the folder, click sync and you're on the road with no messy mass storage issues to manage.
As an aside, if you want to finish fully syncing your phone, be sure to use iSync to sync contacts, calendars and tasks.
We just installed Nokia's software at the office, and are really impressed with the quality. So far, we've only used it to sync two devices in the last ten minutes, so we'll let you know if we find any issues with it as we continue to tinker. The software makes syncing phones as simple as syncing any other portable media player, which is definitely a good thing.
PS -- It's still in beta, so consider yourself warned. Download it from Nokia's site.

Applications For The iPhone Still Up In The Air
Added on 2007-05-11 14:28:00
by Alfredo Padilla
One of the nuggets that came out of today's Apple shareholders meeting is Steve Jobs saying that Apple is "..wrestling with the decision.." to add support for third party applications. At the time that the iPhone was announced Jobs indicated that it would not support third party applications. As far as we can see the only reasons not to support application development are:
- Keeping applications off the phone that can cause problems
- Protecting the iPhone's built in applications from competition
- Steve doesn't want anyone messing with his precious
Frankly none of those reasons seem good enough to justify crippling the iPhone in this way. As great as the iPhone's built in applications might be there's no way that they can provide the whole range of functionality that people will want. We've talked about some of the interesting applications that are available for both regular and smart phones, let's hope the iPhone doesn't shut the door to stuff like that.

Control Your Computer With A Cell Phone
Added on 2007-05-11 12:43:00
by Alfredo Padilla
You may have seen our article last week about software that you can install on your phone to expand its functionality. Well today we heard about an upgrade to an excellent application that works with many different cell phones, Sailing Clicker ($23.95). This application allows you to control a remarkable range of applications on either a Mac or a PC via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. You can use the phone as a remote control for media applications like iTunes or Windows Media Player, as well as control presentation programs and other features. It's also open to development, so if your handy you can make your own extension that will add functionality. Make sure to check the compatibility list for your device and make use of the trial version before you commit to buying.

Beefing Up Your Smart Phone With Software
Added on 2007-05-10 13:25:00
by Alfredo Padilla
One of the great things about so called "smart phones" is their ability to run native third party applications. Native applications are built specifically for the platform you are installing them on. This is in contrast to the java applications we talked about last week, which will run on any phone with the necessary support for java. The bonus of native applications is that they generally have full access to the phone's capabilities, providing much more flexibility and power. Today we'd like to share with you some of our favorite applications for smart phones.

Will the iPhone be obsolete before it ever comes out?
Transmedia is offering new software which promises to make ‘every major cell phone on the market into more than an iPhone…’
The Glide Sync and Glide Mobile software has been available to Windows users since December, and is now available for U.S. Mac users, allowing them to access any kind of desktop file. But it doesn’t stop at just being able to access the files. They can be manipulated as needed, and then synchronized back to the Mac.
