Tellme Launches Voice Search for BlackBerry

Tellme, a Microsoft Corp.'s subsidiary launched a voice search application for the BlackBerry smartphones. Using their voice one can search for information pertaining to businesses, movie times or even traffic.

On downloading the application, a user has to push on their phone's green "talk" button and say either the name of a business, type of business, or the keywords "weather," "movies," "traffic," "map" or "driving directions."

OneSearch 2.0 at CTIA

At the CTIA Wireless 2008, Yahoo unveiled its much-anticipated OneSearch 2.0, which would let users sift through the Web via their voice. One can search either with a text entry or via voice. Expect the service to debut by the second quarter of this year.

Google Releases Today Screen Plug-In for Windows Mobile

Yahoo OnePlace Unveiled

Yahoo at the CeBit technology show in Hannover, Germany unveiled their new service called Yahoo OnePlace, which organizes Web content for quick access. Via OnePlace users can mark links, news feeds or search results which then can be easily accessed  through a mobile device. Yahoo OnePlace, will be available in the second quarter of 2008, according to Yahoo.

"Yahoo OnePlace is where users will be able to find what matters to them the most, no matter where their interests, passions and information come from," Marco Boerries, Yahoo's executive vice president of "connected life," said in a statement.

Opera Switches to Google for Default Mobile Search

Looks like Yahoo has been dumped by Opera who has now chosen Google as their default search engine. From next months onwards the Opera mobile web browser or Opera Mini browser will automatically load Google as the default search engine.

Google gets 50 times more traffic from iPhone

Google is reportedly impressed with the volume of traffic coming to its site from the iPhone. At Mobile World Congress the head of the company’s mobile group said the amount of traffic (which was 50 times more than the traffic Google receives from any other mobile device)”made their engineers check the logs again.” He then went on to hypothesize that mobile search will overtake desktop search in the next few years if manufacturers continue in the same trend as the iPhone.

Google Unveils Search Client for S60 Devices

Google yesterday released a native client of Google search exclusively for the S60 phones. To access this application one needs to point their browser to the Google mobile site. Once the software is downloaded and installed, a shortcut to a Google search box is placed on the Idle Screen.

Sprint Launches Slifter

Sprint Nextel seeks to be the Mecca of online mobile shopping by launching a new shopping service in conjunction with GPShopper. Called Slifter utilizes GPS technology to locate any product in any neighborhood. GPShopper calls the service the “first mobile local product search application” and covers 30,000 participating retail stores.

Alltel Announces Dedicated Mobile Search Application

Alltel Wireless will soon bundle their mobile phones with its first carrier-branded mobile search application with a dedicated search key. A collaborative effort between Alltel and JumpTap, the application will present a search box, which can look for content and information

"At Alltel, we are constantly striving to make the mobile experience simpler and more enjoyable," Wade McGill, senior vice president of product management for Alltel Wireless, said. "We have successfully used dedicated keys in the past to provide content we wanted to make readily available, including games and ringtones. It's been proven that the easier it is for subscribers to find applications, the more likely it is that they will be adopted."
