JP Morgan Retracts IPhone Nano Prediction
Added on 2007-07-11 08:28:00
by Richard Baguley
Well, we were a little cynical, and with good reason, it seems: JP Morgan has just issued a revised note on their pronouncement of an iPhone nano coming soon; they now say that "we caution that the potential for a low-end, subsidized phone from Apple seems unlikely in the near term". Translation from the analyst-speak: it's not coming anytime soon. It also provides a fascinating insight into how analysts work; the prediction was based on the patent that Apple got, which we (and everyone else) covered, and channel checks (discussions with suppliers). Only the channel checks don't seem to have panned out; the note says "We have been unable to independently confirm these checks with a seccond source". In other words: the analyst jumped the gun and ran a story without getting verification from two sources. JP Morgan isn't changing their tune completely, though; their prediction for the next thing we'll see from apple is for a 3G iPhone at a similar price sometime in the first half of 2008.
Our prediction? Predicting the future will remain a difficult business. And we won't charge you an analyst fee for that one.

iPhone Nano coming: No new details
Added on 2007-07-10 08:55:00
by Randall Bennett

We've heard rumors spreading around the interwebs (and even the mainstream media) of an upcoming iPhone Nano, but realistically we're no closer to any solid details than a patent application that started spreading last week. Reuters, the AP and other "mainstream" news agencies are citing a JP Morgan analyst who says he's talked with suppliers in China working on an iPhone Nano. The news isn't really that a lower-cost version of the iPhone is coming, that seems glaringly obvious, but the real question is will it truly follow the iPod Nano form factor? Unfortunately for us, the JP Morgan analyst's take isn't too earth shattering, nor does it shed any real light on the newest piece of Apple vaporware. We'd really take any real news about some sort of lower cost iPhone at this point, but as for the JP Morgan analyst, sounds like someone who likes to get quoted to us.
