Looks like Apple is on a warpath when it comes to DIY ringtones. They released yet another update to iTunes (7.4.2) which once again makes it difficult to create customize ringtones. However we did say difficult and not impossible as Shadowfax in the MacRumors forums already has a cure. So if interested head over to his forum for a complete set of instructions.
We haven't seen this covered anywhere yet so we thought we'd throw up a warning to those who like to remove iTunes' DRM using the perfectly legal and allowed method of burning a song to CD and then re-ripping it to your iTunes library. It turns out that if you do this you will no longer be able to create a ringtone out of the song, instead you get the error you see to the right. We're not big fans of charging people to use music they already own as a ringtone, and we're really not fans of Apple keeping you from moving your own ringtones onto the iPhone, but taking away your ability to pay for a ringtone just because you removed the DRM is just plain mean.
Apple announced the sale of ringtones for the iPhone last week, and the online store that offers them is now live. You buy the ringtones through iTunes; a small icon appears next to the track in the music store showing you which tracks can be bought as ringtones. You'll pay 99 cents on top of the 99 cents you paid for the track.
If any of the songs you own (ones bought through iTunes only) can be purchased as ringtones, you'll see a small bell icon next to the track name in your library. Click on this, agree to the licencing agreement and it'll show you the waveform of the track with a 15-second blue bar that you can drag around to create the ringtone. You can stretch this out to a maximum of 30 seconds, and you can use any 30-second excerpt of the song as ringtone. Click on buy, Steve Jobs gets your 99 cents and you get the ringtone on your iPhone the next time you synch your iPhone.
It is pretty easy to do, and Apple has done a nice job of integrating it into iTunes. And the ability to use any 30 seconds of the song is good; most ringtones are pre-chosen sections, although longer ringtone options might have been nice. But the selection is limited, and given that it is so easy to hack your own ringtones, it isn't clear how many people are going to use this feature.
Halo players rejoice! While you’re waiting to score your copy of Halo 3 the Microsoft site has some Halo 3 goodies for your mobile available to download. Current offerings include a few Halo inspired ringtones as well as some pictures and avatars you can use to jazz up your handset.
Do you want to change the ringtone on your iPhone but are confused by the developer programs you’ve seen so far? iFuntastic 2.0 has just been released with instructions easy enough for your average iPhone owner to figure out. The software allows you to add ringtones, reorder your iPhones applications, and change the carrier logo.
We told you earlier about the iPhone hack to add custom ringtone support to the device, and now we've gone and hacked it ourselves. The result? Custom ringtones, but we did screw up our second attempt since we sent an old configuration file to the device. All in all, we did end up succeeding without further compromising the phone. The Forest guards in the state of Gujarat are sure taking an out of box approach when it comes to catching leopards to put them back into the wild! They actually use mobile phones with ringtones of cows mooing, goats bleating and roosters crowing to ensnare the unsuspecting leopards.
"The moos of a cow, bleating of a goat from the phone has proved effective to trap leopards," said D. Vasani, a senior forest official in Gujarat. "This trick works."
Flycell Inc., a purveyor of cell phone ring tones, wallpapers and videos, launched a new youth-oriented Web site Wednesday and announced a new subscription plan as well as an agreement with Universal Music Group.
Flycell’s agreement with Universal will allow it to offer MP3-quality ring tones and other content authored by UMG’s stock of artists.
Your cell phone ring tone broadcasts your personality to the world everytime someone calls, and makes more of a statement than you may imagine. Advances in mobile audio have made an entire kaleidoscope of ring tones available to mobile phone users - you can choose anything from movie clips to wrestler's voices to the latest Rap tune. According to a recent article by the Marietta Times, there are certain personality types that choose certain types of rings. If you leave the default ringtone on your phone, for example, you are announcing to the world that you are just too busy to choose a ring tone! If you like to leave yours on vibrate, you are the strong silent type, and also quite polite. Users who choose animal tones such as a bark, purr, or moo are animal lovers and playful at heart. Rap ring tones signal an ultra trendy type, and rock ring tones show someone who is full of nervous energy. Those who choose custom ring tones are unique, musical entrepreneurs.
What about those who choose obscene ring tones? They are passive, aggressive types with a strong need for counseling.
My ringtone is Marvin the Martian - this means I am a fun, playful type with a strong nostalgic streak. All true!
