Samsung's SGH-P520: Prada competitor?
Added on 2007-07-24 09:20:00
by Randall Bennett

While this whole touchscreen only market is blowing up thanks to that one phone... Samsung looks like it's going to compete with its Japanese rival over the higher-end market with the SGH-P520. With a three-megapixel camera, QVGA display, 50MB of on-board storage (expandable through microSD), Stereo Bluetooth, EDGE and WiFi with UMA support, the phone sounds like a worthy Prada competitor, but the bad news is its triband GSM radio, which means US residents are out of luck.

iPhone Vs. Prada

Despite the whispers and back-talking about the iPhone’s striking resemblance to the LG Prada phone, the newly released Apple product is not just another Prada. As tests from the iPhone are rolling in, initial results show that the two products are remarkably different, even if they might look like distant cousins.
The two both are flat as a board, but the iPhone is clearly larger than the Prada with its 3.5 inch LCD touch screen user interface that towers over the 3-inch LCD of the Prada. Customers will be tough pressed to pay $799 for the Prada when they could pay $500 to $600 for the iPhone. The iPhone, geared as an overall smartphone, has an elegant, more powerful interface than the Prada feature phone.
There is one drawback to the iPhone. Users can only text one message to one person at a time, without bulk messaging functionality. Prada owners will rejoice to hear that their purchase beats out the iPhone in texting options. Overall, the iPhone is shining over the luxury brand name of the Prada.
As WirelessInfo.com review tests continue to filter in for tonight’s pending comprehensive review of the iPhone, initial reactions to the two products is simple - Apple is not just another copycat of Prada.

Mobile Phones and the Synaptic Touch
Added on 2007-04-12 08:30:00
by Rusty Weiss
Synaptics’ ClearPad touch screen technology is finding quite a niche in the mobile realm. The technology is an alternative to mechanical buttons, using a screen sensor which results in typical user tasks such as scrolling, selecting, and moving the cursor.
However, Synaptics CEO Francis Lee is keeping a tight lip on whether the touch screen technology will find its way in the iPhone.
Synaptics essentially dominates the touch screen panel market for personal computers. But mobile touch technology is clearly being pushed in the mobile market. ClearPad has already been confirmed for the LG Prada, appears in the companies concept phone the Onyx, and will likely find a home with other upcoming releases. Lee believes this implementation of the ClearPad technology is ‘just the tip of the iceberg.’
