SK Telecom to buy Sprint?
Added on 2007-07-26 10:33:00
by Randall Bennett

Wow, kids, talk about a way to get US cell phone bloggers tongues wagging... SK Telecom says it's in talks to buy Sprint.

For those not awed enough by that sentence alone, and don't understand why it deserves its own paragraph, let's break it down for you. SK Telecom is South Korea's top wireless provider, and many mobile pundits look to SK Telecom for the "future" of the industry.  For example, SK Telecom championed mobile TV through DVB-H, among other technological achievements.  Many absolutely insane phones come out in South Korea, as you doubt know, and our favs are usually on SK Telecom.

Helio, the MVNO reselling access on Sprint, already has a deal with SK Telecom; in fact Helio is a partnership between Earthlink (and Skye Davidson) and SK Telecom, which is why phones like the Ocean hit Helio.  A deal with Sprint could be even more interesting, and if SK Telecom moved any of their cutting-edge tactics to the US, Sprint might be able to move out of its number three spot.

UPDATE – AT&T Versus NASCAR, Hearing Scheduled
Added on 2007-04-12 23:39:00
by Rusty Weiss

As you know from our previous posts, AT&T and NASCAR are in a tight race … to the courtroom.

AT&T is seeking to have its logo added to Jeff Burton’s Nextel Cup car. That’s right, Nextel Cup. As you could imagine, NASCAR didn’t exactly race right out to grant the request.  The Nextel-NASCAR agreement puts a glitch in the process, and NASCAR had asked for an injunction hearing to be delayed.

The request for delay was denied. A preliminary injunction hearing has been set for April 26th. Mark your calendars for the start of that legal battle. And, you guessed it… Gentleman, start your engines!

Sprint Looks to Rejuvenate Advertising Scheme
Added on 2007-04-02 21:41:00
by Rusty Weiss

With stagnant sales, and troubling stock numbers, Sprint Nextel is looking for a new advertising plan. They hope that they’ve found it, in a new partnership with Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, in San Francisco.

With most U.S. companies enduring a flattening of their market sales, the move is an attempt to differentiate Sprint Nextel from the rest of the crowd.

The new advertising firm may ring a bell for those of us over 30. Goodby once developed the old ‘Reach out and touch someone’ ads from years gone by. Ah, to be young again.

AT&T Wants a Piece of NASCAR
Added on 2007-03-26 15:28:00
by Rusty Weiss

The race is on. So pull up your lawn chairs, grab some chips, and enjoy some perpetual left hand turns … er … NASCAR, in a race against the court system.

In case you were residing under a rock recently, AT&T has taken ownership of Cingular under the theme of ‘The New AT&T.’ Now, the telecommunications giant wants NASCAR to take an ‘out with the old, in with the new’ approach.

Jeff Burton, NASCAR star, drives a car with the Cingular cell phone service logo. But with the recent acquisition, AT&T plans to eliminate the Cingular brand name all together. As a result, AT&T wants their logo racing by on fans television screens.

Sprint Nextel has been testing an unlimited cell phone plan that truly is unlimited. The plan includes unlimited call time and text messages and goes a step further by also allowing unlimited Internet access all for the not so low price of $120 a month. The plan is currently being tested in the San Francisco bay area and if successful is expected to be offered in other markets.
