According to Financial Times, Virgin Mobile is looking to acquire Helio, which is 69 percent owned by South Korea's SK Telecom Co. The partnership aims at boosting the performance of both companies.
"Although there's no guarantee that the combined company will succeed, it's still a good move as SK Telecom can reduce risks from the U.S. business," said Lee Shi-hoon, an analyst at Hyundai Securities. "Virgin Mobile has a scale and Helio has strong services, so the combination can work."

Everyone says me too to unlimited plans
Added on 2008-02-19 17:13:00
by Alfredo Padilla
In what has to be the most gratuitous example of "me too!" it seems like almost everyone announced that they will be offering various flavors of unlimited calling plans today. Verizon's announcement (via Engadget) was expected, but now AT&T (via Phonescoop) and T-Mobile (via Gizmodo) have thrown their hats in the ring as well. All the plans start at $99 a month for unlimited calls with various additional charges for unlimited data and text messages. Of course they're all johnny-come-latelies since Sprint got there first and Helio's been there for awhile too. We can only say that we hope the real competition gets started now. How about unlimited everything for twenty bucks a month? We can only hope.

Helio has just released a file browser for the Ocean. Though a file browser is old hat, the Ocean really needs one. In fact, it needed one when it shipped, more than six months ago. Fortunately, the application is free to Ocean owners, who can find it in the application aisle of the Ocean's online store.

Helio To Lay Off 100
Added on 2007-08-31 12:01:00
by Richard Baguley
Not a good day to be an employee of Helio; 100 of them are going to have a significantly extended 3-day weekend, as they are being laid off. Helio has denied that the layoffs are connected to the financial troubles of their main investor Earthlink, claiming that the layoffs are part of its transition from start-up to normal operations. The layoffs, according to Helio Spokeperson Rick Heineman are mainly amongst the sales and distribution side of the business. "As we transition out of startup mode, we're learning that we don't need as many people on the street with our sales and distribution teams" he was quoted as saying by Wired. Heineman also claimed that the company is doing well, claiming that July was one of their best months for growth.

First Call: Helio Fin
Added on 2007-08-17 12:13:00
by Alfredo Padilla
The Helio Fin came out of left field when it was announced a couple of days ago. Frankly no one was expecting an ultra thin flip phone with built in GPS and 3 megapixel camera, and keeping that under wraps is impressive enough. In this First Call we see how impressive the phone is right out of the box.

Helio Fin comes out of left field to pleasantly surprise
Added on 2007-08-15 08:34:00
by Randall Bennett
Helio wins the "we keep it on the down-low" award for surprising us with the Fin. Helio's first clamshell rocks a generous three-megapixel camera, with a 2.3-inch screen, microSD (with a supplied 2gb card), EVDO and GPS. The device also offers turn by turn directions via Garmin, but interested parties will pay a pretty penny, as the service costs $3 per day to rent. Ouch.
The Fin is a pleasant surprise, and at $175 without a contract, or $125 with a contract, it certainly won't break the bank.

Helio's Ocean gets opened to third-party apps
Added on 2007-08-06 12:54:00
by Randall Bennett
While the iPhone might be getting all the attention, especially in hacker circles, one of our perennial non-touchscreen favs, the Ocean, is being opened to third party apps outside of the Helio garden. A group of hackers say they've successfully installed Opera Mini 3 on the device, illiciting cheers from proper web-surfers around the Helio world. The fix isn't without it's quirks, as landscape mode and the QWERTY keyboard don't work properly, but regardless, the platform is now open-ish. Drift and Heat users, don't feel left out, as hackers say they've got your number too, but sorry Kickflippers.

The Ocean, which is seen by many as Helio’s answer to the iPhone, can now run the Mini Opera Browser thanks to the enterprising members of Heliocity. "1. Point your Ocean browser over to: http://www.heliocity.net/downloads/
2. Press the “View in HTML” link to disable Google Mobilizer.
3. Click the “Opera Mini” link. Download should begin."

It wasn’t too long ago when YouTube was only available for Verizon users. Now if you’re rocking a pretty substantial data plan on your handset then you too can watch videos of skateboarding dogs and other uncanny mishaps caught on tape. Helio has decided to cash in on YouTube being free for everyone by coming up with a way to charge for it. Helio users can pay $5.99 a month and score access to a “Video Virus” service that includes video from YouTube as well as eBaum’s World and a few other sites.
