Warner Music CEO Admits Mistakes

Bashing the music industry and their archaic polices is a favorurite past-time for many of us and looks like Warner Music CEO Edgar Bronfman Jr. too has joined the bandwagon.

At the GSMA Mobile Congress, he admitted that the music industry couldn’t figure out what the customers wanted and instead waged a war with them and suffered loses.

Isn’t hindsight a wonderful thing? Some excerpts from his various pearls of wisdom.

“We expected our business would remain blissfully unaffected even as the world of interactivity, constant connection and file sharing was exploding. And of course we were wrong. How were we wrong? By standing still or moving at a glacial pace, we inadvertently went to war with consumers by denying them what they wanted and could otherwise find and as a result of course, consumers won."

"People want a more interesting form of mobile music content. They want it to be easy to buy with a single click - yes, a single click, not a dozen. And they want access to it, quickly and easily, wherever they are. 24/7. Any player in the mobile value chain who thinks they can provide less than a great experience for consumers and remain competitive is fooling themselves."

3G for all, except the Americas

LG and the GSMA are teaming to move 3G phone usage into the hands of mere mortals.  The "3G for All" program features LG's KU250, a bargain basement priced handset with standard 3g mainstays like video and audio downloads, the ability to make video calls (although without a forward facing camera, not too much use for that quite yet) and some MP3 and WMA playback action.  If you live in the US as we do, unfortunately the "3G for All" is a bit of a misnomer, since the phone will be available in Europe, Asia, Middle Asia and Africa later this month, but since of the rest of the world doesn't dig EV-DO as much as we do (not to mention the patent disputes,) and since our HSDPA implementation is lacking at best,  looks like 3G for All won't be for us for a while.
