EU to Monitor Mobile Bills
Added on 2008-01-18 14:44:00
by Tanya Palta
The European Telecom Commission is concerned about the skyrocketing roaming rates and have deiced to monitor SMS and data charges. Since calls are charged by the minute, users in Europe are often billed 20 percent more than the actual time of their calls.
"The Commission is concerned that customers are being charged on a per-minute basis instead of for the actual time of the call," it said in a statement. "At the retail level, the difference between billed and actual minutes appears to be typically around 20 percent," the Commission said.

iPhone European Launch Lackluster?
Added on 2007-11-09 13:19:00
by Alfredo Padilla
The iPhone was launched in Europe and Germany today to what seems like much less fanfare than accompanied the US launch of the phone over four months ago. Lines in the UK and Germany were much smaller than were seen in in the US while T-Mobile Germany reported selling only 10,000 phones, far less than the 270,000 that Apple reported was sold in the first day in the United States. We've previously reported about reasons why the iPhone may not be as popular in the much more sophisticated mobile phone markets in the Europe, starting with the price. Why would you pay over $500 for an iPhone and get locked into a contract when you can pick up an N95 for close to free with the same contract? Of course it should also be noted that the UK and Germany together are about half the size of the US market.

iPhone to be available via T-Mobile in Germany
Added on 2007-09-19 09:38:00
by Alfredo Padilla
As predicted the iPhone will be carried in Germany by T-Mobile. Apple's press release states that the 8GB iPhone will be available for €300 starting on November 9, the same date the phone will be available in the UK. The iPhone will not be sporting 3G, but it will have the expected update that brings functionality like the Wi-Fi iTunes music store as found on the iPod Touch. T-Mobile will be extending it's EDGE coverage in Germany to be completed by the end of 2007. There's no information available right now about rate plans, although the press release does reference T-Mobile's extensive Wi-Fi hotspot network. We imaging that there might be a deal in place to provide unlimited data access via this network as was done via the Cloud Wi-Fi network in the UK, but there's no confirmation about that either.

European iPhone Details Revealed in Leaked Ad?
Added on 2007-09-08 19:10:00
by Richard Baguley
Gizmodo is featuring what looks like it might be a leaked advert for the European iPhone. If so, it's bad news for US iPhone users: the advert mentions the iPhone XL as having 16GB of memory and a HSDPA 3G data connection. The advert mentions a release date of 12th November, but remember that it could just be some fan's Photoshop fantasy. More details and a complete translation of the advert after the break.

HTC Touch hits T-Mobile Germany
Added on 2007-07-26 11:04:00
by Randall Bennett
Don't call it an iPhone competitor, but instead T-Mobile's latest phone hitting Germany and if the rediculously cheap $68 price tag doesn't sway you ($535 out of contract) the aformentioned specs should. Sure, the talk time doesn't quite live up to that of the wonderPhone, but we can't help but drool over a fairly inexpensive HTC phone with TouchFLO interface.

Will iPhone Be A Damp Squib In Europe
Added on 2007-07-06 02:45:00
by Tanya Palta
Trade Pundits in Europe are predicting that the iPhone will fail to make a considerable impact in the fickle European market where the majority of the users are pay-as-you-go customers and prefer business devices. They also feel that the iPhone will remain a novelty device restricted mainly to Apple fanboys and the casual user.
"I think that Apple will do with the iPhone what it has done in the personal computer arena - take about 5 percent of the total market," said Frank Rothauge, a telecom analyst in Frankfurt at Bankhaus Sal. Oppenheim. "That's still significant, but it's not going to change the world."

LG's "Fatty Chocolate" hits Europeans today
Added on 2007-06-20 15:55:00
by Randall Bennett
LG's Chocolate is a pretty successful device in the US, and it looks like LG's design team is going pull a MotoRAZR on us and implement the design cues in a variety of devices. LG's KU850 hits Europe today with a bit wider form-factor. The phone embraces some extra width and loses some depth (we're talking size wise, not feature wise) and puts an interesting twist on the Chocolate design framework. The "fatty Chocolate," as cell phone geeks are dubbing the phone, sports Bluetooth 2.0, a 2 megapixel cam, a forward facing cam for video conferencing action, MicroSD and requisite HSDPA. Sounds pricey, but fun.
We've heard many-a Chocolate owner decry the touch sensitive send/end buttons on the face of the device, and looks like LG didn't listen for the KU850, but if some spy pics posted over at Engadget Mobile for the VX8550 are any indication, future implementations of the Chocolate look should move the send/end buttons into a less accident-prone place.

Cell phones on a plane!: Airbus gets approval in Europe
Added on 2007-06-19 14:28:00
by Randall Bennett
Uh oh... European airline passengers' dreams of flying the quiet skies might be on their way out as AirBus just received approval for an on-board mobile phone system from the EASA, the European Aircraft Safety Agency (think FAA for Europe.) Apparently, the crew on each flight can set the system to only accept data transmissions (aka "Quiet mode") and everyone will just have to listen to thumb-board clicking, as opposed to the outright yapping of current public transit. Right now the system is only being rolled out in smaller aircraft designed for short-haul flights, so only an hour of annoyance instead of six.

Nokia's rumored 7900 fashion phone
Added on 2007-06-19 08:46:00
by Randall Bennett

We've heard some rumblings of a new fashion phone from Nokia, and the rumored 7900 looks like it might fit the rumored bill. The phone, yet to be confirmed, is rumored to be a quad-band GSM phone with HSDPA support likely. A German Nokia fanboy site has the scoop, and says to expect a QVGA screen (320x240) with 1GB of internal storage and a 1.3MP camera. Other than the absolutely unacceptable resolution of the camera, the camera doesn't sound too shabby under the hood, and it sure is a looker. The keypad is, if nothing else, a unique take on traditional mobile phone keypads. US readers, don't get too excited; our spider senses tell us this phone probably won't be hitting US shores anytime soon (if ever.)

No European iPhone carrier?

Rumor has it Apple is having trouble finding an iPhone partner in Europe. Several of Europe's mobile carriers have even said they “will never offer the iPhone” due to the extreme demands Apple puts on their cell phone carriers. Apple’s deal with AT&T is rumored to include revenue sharing from monthly plans as well as involvement in support for the phone. Verizon was reportedly originally offered the iPhone in the US and turned Apple down due to the conditions of the agreement.

Nokia 6500 Slider photos
Added on 2007-06-07 14:45:00
by Randall Bennett
Nokia's 6500 slider is scheduled to hit Europe in Q3 of this year, and Mobilvillag.hu has some live shots of the phone. The industrial design looks akin to some brushed metal action, perhaps akin the iPod Mini of old, but looking at the black "butt" of the phone, it looks like it could slide up where the black meets the metal, leaving the D-pad and the send and end buttons toward the bottom, with two soft keys sliding to the top. Instead, we get a full face slide, which doesn't look bad, but a little boring compared to what Nokia could have tried. Regardless of the "traditional" slide, the camera on the back sports 3.2 megapixels with Carl Zeiss optics, which isn't too shabby at all. We'll be waiting for Nokia to send one our way despite US consumers probably not seeing the device for a while, and Europeans picking it up for around €370.
We've also got some press shots of the device after the break, if you're salivating over the slider.
