Motorola Z9 Approved by the FCC
Added on 2008-03-14 02:43:00
by Tanya Palta

Looks what we found in the archives of FCC? The highly anticipated Motorola Z9, which has been in the pipeline for quite some time has popped up one again on the FCC website. The slider phone carries an AT&T branding and will also run on the AT&T's 3G network.

While there is no word on pricing or availability, this quad-band GSM/EDGE phone may just make an appearance at CTIA. To get all the dirt on this phone head over to the FCC site.

Nokia N95 with 3G Battery Tests: Talk Time
Added on 2007-10-05 09:16:00
by Alfredo Padilla

As you know we got our hands on the new Nokia N95 with 3G a couple of days ago and we've been running it through our usual set of battery life tests to see how the combination of battery hungry 3G connectivity and a higher capacity battery are affecting the phone's performance. Yesterday we found that when browsing the web the N95 with 3G performed about an hour worse than the older N95 that lacks North American 3G and instead uses an EDGE connection. Last night we ran our call time test and found a similar effect. See all our results after the jump.

Another AT&T Edge Outage?
Added on 2007-07-20 12:48:00
by Alfredo Padilla

As we know there was a rather significant outage of AT&T's Edge network around the time the iPhone was released. According to Gizmodo there was another outage in the Boston area today, although apparently the issue has been addressed and is unrelated to the iPhone. We noticed some trouble accessing the Edge network in the Boston area around noon EST. A simple reboot of our iPhone addressed the issue and we don't know if it had anything to do with this general outage.

iPhone hacks: We iP0wn the iPhone
Added on 2007-07-13 17:36:00
by Randall Bennett

We told you earlier about the iPhone hack to add custom ringtone support to the device, and now we've gone and hacked it ourselves.  The result?  Custom ringtones, but we did screw up our second attempt since we sent an old configuration file to the device.  All in all, we did end up succeeding without further compromising the phone.  Check out the video embedded below:

Custom iPhone ringtone instructions hit the web
Added on 2007-07-13 09:42:00
by Randall Bennett

Yesterday, a YouTube Video of a guy putting a custom ringtone on the iPhone started spreading around the interwebs, and now you too can put your own ringtones on your $600 wonderPhone.  HackTheIphone details a 23 step process for bricking customizing your iPhone.  Fortunately for you adventuresome warriors out there, HackTheiPhone reports everyone who's tried has successfully restored their iPhone using iTunes, so while we can't endorse such wholesome hackery, it might be worth a shot.  We'll try to convince our resident iPhone maven, Alfredo, to let us brick customize his personal iPhone and report back, that is if we can get past his iron-clad grip on his new baby.

Oh yeah, and this hack is for Intel-Mac users only, so if you're wholly subscribed to the gospel of Jobs, or haven't repurchased hardware in the last six months, you're out of luck.

iPhone battery life 50% of Apple's estimate?
Added on 2007-07-01 23:06:00
by Randall Bennett

We're still running the iPhone through all the tests possible (and you thought the weekend was for sleep, pshaw) and have some pretty big results thus far: looks like the iPhone didn't get all the battery life Apple had estimated.  We'd been hearing people having battery life problems in an informal dialog, but now some of our test results show the iPhone gets almost half of Apple's eight hours of promised talk time per charge.  We're still working to verify the results and finish some of our other crazy tests, but we'll keep you tested as we keep going.  We've got more than one phone, so after we run our initial tests, we'll run them again and again with different phones.

iLove: What We Do for the iPhone
Added on 2007-07-01 15:01:00
by Karen Cheung

iPhoneThis weekend saw the dedication of the WirelessInfo.com and Reviewed.com staff to bring the first comprehensive full-length review of the iPhone.  Among the WI’s mobile addicts are ten staffers and two interns who, like the thousands of Americans today, waited in line at Apple stores for what people have been dubbed as the “Jesus Phone.”  Many of the writers, bloggers, and testers have been up since 3am, working a near straight 24-hour iDay to answer America’s number question - “Should I buy the iPhone?”

With consumer reaction ranging from i-ysteria to i-don’t-care, the answer is Maybe, depending on who you are.  It’s hard to come up with a definitive answer for the general population, according to testers.  This all-one-in device won’t appeal for power-type business professionals who are looking for extensive multi-media functions.  Instead, the iPhone is geared for the forget-me-nots of consumers who want both a music player and mobile phone but can’t manage to fit both in their pocket.  For them, the iPhone is the solution.

Activation of the iPhone
Added on 2007-06-29 18:42:00
by Karen Cheung

iPhoneAlthough other reports have come in about minor problems with activation of the iPhone, WirelessInfo.com did not encounter any problems.  In general, activation was a smooth process, according to testers.  Instead of activating the phone from local cell phone stores which users are accustomed to, iPhone users can activate their new prize from the privacy of their own homes through Apple’s iTunes music program.

The iPhone does require some information including social security number, billing address, and a credit card number for a $36 activation fee.

Activation takes roughly 15 minutes, according to staff.

iPhone waitAfter waiting in line for 13 consecutive hours, the staff of WirelessInfo.com finally acquired four copies of the iPhone.  It took some questionable driving speed limits and one Editor-in-Chief hopping on the back of a motorcycle.

EDGE speeds improving since TDMA shutdown?
Added on 2007-06-29 12:28:00
by Randall Bennett

We've heard some reports around the web of AT&T's EDGE network delivering relatively blazing speeds, for EDGE at least.  Some of our friends at Engadget and Gizmodo report seeing speeds well over 200KBPS, which is an absolute shock.  Forum posters on the topic say the speed increase started with the shutdown of the former AT&T Wireless' TDMA networks (not to be confused with AT&T, or AT&T Mobility.)  Whatever the case, the masses waiting in line for the iPhone (which includes us) aren't complaining.

AT&T 8525 sees price drop
Added on 2007-06-29 11:02:00
by Randall Bennett

As we've been standing in line for over twelve hours now, we're pretty sick of talking about / hearing about / thinking about Apple's wonderPhone.  It's only six more hours and we'll all have them to play with.  Just in case you're not down for some mobile OSX love, one of our favorite Windows Mobile devices just saw a pretty significant drop in price, maybe due in part to the launch of the wonderPhone.  Head to AT&T (and step in front of the line waiters) and pick up an 8525 from HTC/AT&T for $299.  If the iPhone doesn't quite tickle your fancy, the 8525 might be a good place to start looking for a replacement.

We actually took a stroll out of the office today to see what all the hubub was about, headed down to the CambridgeSide Galleria and hit up the Apple store with our trusty video camera in tow.  It's no dramatic chimpmunk, but check out the video for three minutes of iPhone mania.

Data-driven handheld platform gets 3G with AT&T
Added on 2007-06-21 09:47:00
by Randall Bennett

We guess that an "all business" device has to kind of be "all ugly" too, at least if PsionTeklogix' Workabout Pro is any indication.  Sure, beneath the surface it isn't too horrible, sporting an HSDPA radio, WiFi and Bluetooth, and the externals aren't ugly without a purpose, the device should withstand almost any physical abuse you could throw at it, but something about a water-resistant Windows Mobile device dressed to survive multiple falls feels a little perverted.  Truth be told, the device isn't really a phone, and is targeted toward businesses having use for handheld computers (think about oil changes at Wal-Mart, for example,) and in fact, it's the next natural evolution of adding 3G data to an already data-centric device, so in reality it is a good idea. However, our superficiality has to shine through at least a little bit.

The ugly-face Workabout Pro is available today, and just in case you're a business, you can pick it up from Psion's website.

Motorola RAZR 2 poses for shots at EngadgetMobile

Other than that 3000-LB gorilla phone coming out, we've had our eye on the next version of the RAZR since its announcement.  Ryan Block at Engadget got to play with the phone for a bit and has a plethora of pics up over at Engadget Mobile.  So far? The phone looks pretty nice, but we'll let you decide that for yourself.

iPhone update: Activation text removed from ads, plus potential iPhone bugs?
Added on 2007-06-07 09:24:00
by Randall Bennett

iPhoneCould the iPhone support prepaid / pay-as-you-go plans from AT&T?  Erica over at TUAW gathered the Apple fanboy community together and noticed that the prior "requires minimum 2-year activation" text is gone from the bottom of the ads."  We're not certain on why they pulled the text, and since Apple is known for its loud mouth (/ sarcasm) we'll really have to wait till June 29th to see why the text is absent.

Also on the iPhone tip, AppleHound, AKA a site for too much obsession, has already gathered a list of supposed "bugs" found in January's Jobs-note featuring the iPhone.  The writer says, "My thought was this -- on the slim chance that I stumble upon something that Apple has overlooked and they fix it, we all get a better iPhone."  Sounds crazy, but want a taste?  The poster points out that in January's Jobs-note, Stevie J was listening to the Red Hot Chili Peppers when he gets a call from Phil Schiller where the music fades out and the call comes through.  After he hangs up on Phil, the phone switches to Visual Voicemail.  Jobs then switches back to the iPod app quickly.  The poster presumes by Jobs' quick response it should have properly switched back to the iPod.

The thought is nice and all, but seriously?  We're shocked anyone would pour over a presentation enough times to actually feel like they've identified potential product flaws before they've actually physically seen a device in person, but now that the Messiah-phone is only three weeks away, we'll all find out whether it really lives up to the hype.  Here's a hint, it probably can't just because of the enormity of the hype.  We're not saying it's not worth waiting for, nor are we saying we think it'll be horrible, but we are saying it is the most hyped product in consumer electronics history and posts like preemptively finding bugs in a yet-to-be released device have got to stop.

Fanboys and girls, you're creating a bad environment for the iPhone.  Stop.

New iPhone ad:
Added on 2007-06-06 16:59:00
by Randall Bennett

Another new iPhone ad hit the airwaves (or cable...waves....) today on CNBC touting the iPhone's internet abilities.  The spot (YouTube'd after the break for your viewing pleasure) claims the browser isn't surfing any sort of mobile web, but instead surfing the real web.  To us, surfing the "real web" can't be too fun with that 2.5G EDGE connection *zing!* but we're sure the experience looks good.  Just wait till we get our hands on the phone June 29th... then we'll know how great it truly is.

T-Mobile Wing review goes live
Added on 2007-06-06 13:21:00
by Randall Bennett

Our review of the T-Mobile Wing just hit the main site, and our tests found some pretty interesting results.  The phone actually just took the crown as the top rated phone in our tests because the battery life is absolutely stellar.

14 hours of talk time.  10 and a half hours of music playback.  Nine hours of web browsing.

Not kidding.

The battery life may be stellar, but anyone looking for an excellent camera might want to look elsewhere.  Despite spec'ing at two megapixels, we found that the camera didn't beat the 1.3-megapixel cameras in either the Motorola Q or T-Mobile Dash.

Put the bad camera with a seemingly laggy interface and you might want to give the phone a go in person before you plunk down that cash.  This is the first phone we've tested with WinMo 6, and it does sport the same 200MHZ processor as other HTC devices, so we're not sure if it's T-Mobile's custom software lagging the device or if WinMo 6 is just heavier.  Either way, read the full review here.
