Qualcomm has Limited Licence for infringed Broadcom Patents

 Qualcomm Inc has been ordered by a federal judge in California to stop selling 3G WCDMA cellular chips that infringe on the Broadcom Corp patents. Qualcomm will also pay royalties to Broadcom for the chips it will sell during the "sunset period" ending January 31, 2009.
In a statement, Broadcom General Counsel David Dull said the company was "pleased”.
"Broadcom should not have to compete against companies that use Broadcom's own patented technology against us, and this injunction puts a stop to Qualcomm doing just that," Dull said.

Two new interesting developments took place in the Qualcomm vs. Broadcom legal tussle. While the federal judge affirmed a jury verdict that Qualcomm Inc infringed Broadcom Corp patents however he also chose to overturn the award of double damages.The damages for infringement were reduced to $19.6 million and Broadcom accepted the reduce damages in order to avoid a new trial.

Import ban On Qualcomm On Hold

Qualcomm today announced that it was granted a stay by the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. If you jog your memory cells you will remember that ITC had imposed an importation ban on request by Broadcom on June 7th.
In granting the stay, the Federal Circuit agreed that the third parties demonstrated “a substantial case on the merits and that the harm factors weigh in their favor.”
“We are pleased that the Court of Appeals recognized the undeserved harm to parties who were not named in the lawsuit, and that our customers will continue to be able to introduce new products into the U.S. marketplace during the appeals process,” said Alex H. Rogers, senior vice president and legal counsel, Qualcomm.

Qwest lands HTC Vox (aka 5800 and Qwest Fusion)

 Qwest Wireless, known as the wireless arm of the west's biggest telecom provider, is little more than a blip on most national carriers radar, but with the HTC Vox now on the MVNO's network, Qwest has a pretty big feather in their cap. The phone rocks a 2.4" screen, has a two-megapixel camera, stereo Bluetooth, Windows Mobile 6, and while the official specs don't mention it, we'd be shocked if it didn't support EVDO. The phone costs $199.99 with a two year contract and is available now on their site.

Late show teams up with Verizon

 While the Late Show isn't what it used to be in its hayday (remember when people HAD to see the top ten list?) CBS is teaming up with Davd Letterman's WorldWide Pants to offer the Late show (and Late Late show, for you Craig Fergason fans) on Verizon's V-Cast service. Starting tomorrow, users can log on to watch the complete show, or clips of the sow, on any V-Cast enabled phone. Keep the mobile content coming Verizon, eventually people might want it.

Sprint snags HTC's Touch

 While the HTC touch isn't anything special when compared to that OTHER touch screen only device, call us HTC fanboys but we still think there's something pretty nifty about an upgraded version of the Touch heading to Sprint later this year. GearLog says the phone will jump to 400MHz from 200, and snag some EvDO Rev A. for some quick data action, but we're hoping for an even more advanced version of TouchFLO when the phone likely launches in November.

Helio Fin comes out of left field to pleasantly surprise

 Helio wins the "we keep it on the down-low" award for surprising us with the Fin. Helio's first clamshell rocks a generous three-megapixel camera, with a 2.3-inch screen, microSD (with a supplied 2gb card), EVDO and GPS. The device also offers turn by turn directions via Garmin, but interested parties will pay a pretty penny, as the service costs $3 per day to rent. Ouch.
The Fin is a pleasant surprise, and at $175 without a contract, or $125 with a contract, it certainly won't break the bank.

HTC Iris hits FCC, designers asleep?

 The HTC Iris just hit the FCC, and to be honest, we're a little disappointed. No, it's not the 2.4 inch dispaly, nor the EVDO, GPS, WiFi or two-megapixel camera, we're disappointed because the leaked renders are, well, kind of ugly. Sure, HTC has come through over the last five years with almost every phone design being somewhat attractive, so we'll give them the benefit of the doubt. The HTC Iris looks like it's some sort of Cavalier-esque followup, albeit taking unfortunate design queues from the Palm Gandalf. Here's hoping HTC slims down the phone design and goes less "balloon" and more "vavoom."

 Samsung's SCH-i760 hit Verizon's site today, and while we're not too pleased with the overall "sex appeal" of the phone, this non-looker looks to be some sort of Windows Mobile work horse. The phone rocks WiFi, EvDO, Micro-SD and Bluetooth, but disappoints us with an all-too-common 1.3 MP camera. We'll be looking for it ASAP to hit the streets, and see if the QWERTY slider is actually worth the wait.

LG and Sprint announce the Muziq

 Despite some other music-phone launching later this week, Sprint and LG are announcing the LG MUZIQ. If it weren't being announced sandwiched between scads and scads of iPhone posts, the MUZIQ might get some extra attention with some interesting features like a built-in FM transmitter that'll broadcast music to any FM reciever within ten feel, and support for SD cards up to 4GB (using SDHC.)
Music features aside, the phone is pretty standard, featuring a standard 1.3-megapixel camera, Bluetooth (with DUN support so you can get your EV-DO tether on) and interestingly support for Pop3 email. The phone also rocks out some EV-DO love should you need to get some over-the-air music streams or downloads. If you're looking to clean up some of that pocket clutter with a small capacity MP3 player and clamshell handset, the MUZIQ might do the job come July 15th when it launches for $99 with a two-year contract.

Amp'd part tres: Verizon and Amp'd make a deal

 Seems like Amp'd is one MVNO that just won't quit, as they've settled their dispute with Verizon. Verizon originally threatened to shut Amp'd off its network if they didn't pay up the $33 million in usage charges, but Amp'd filed a lawsuit in an attempt to force Verizon to keep letting them use Verizon's network.
Since Amp'd is assured network access, it puts the company in a position to obtain funding through its chapter 11 proceedings, despite already burning through $360 million in startup funding. The takeaway from the news? Despite its piling debt, pending bankruptcy and other woes, Amp'd can keep the lights on and those shyster subscribers can continue not paying their bills.

Import ban on Qualcomm chips: It's on.

Wow, Qualcomm just can't catch a break as of yet, as the International Trade Comission denied a request to stay an order banning imports of phones sporting Qualcomm chips. Any phone shipping into the US before June 7th can continue to be imported, but any new phone models utilizing Qualcomm's EV-DO chipset (read: most American 3G devices) will not be permitted in the country.
All is not lost yet, however, the ITC was given till June 27th to explain exactly why the Qualcomm ban is necessary. Blech. You might remember this saga has been winding through every conceivable channel, and mobile carriers, especially of the CDMA flavor, are pretty worried.

LG enV in orange

 We're not huge fans of the enV, but we know enV enthusiasts love their fold and QWERTY action. Now, they can love it in a burnt orange color. Nothing has really changed from the previous enV, with a focus on VCast and the like, but it still has a two megapixel camera, A2DP support, EV-DO (and support for DUN pairing, if nerd types flirt with the enV) and of course, the heart of the device, the QWERTY keyboard. Right now, it'll run you $150 with a two year contract.

Verizon Admits that "Unlimited" EVDO Broadband Service Actually Has a 5GB Cap

 Verizon's EVDO broadband service has long been advertised as "unlimited", but now, the company is working to change its messaging to reflect reality - there is a 5GB per month cap on this service. Broadband Reports.com has pointed out that the TOS still says,
"Unlimited Data Plans and Features (such as NationalAccess, BroadbandAccess, Push to Talk, and certain VZEmail services) may ONLY be used with wireless devices for the following purposes: (i) Internet browsing; (ii) email; and (iii) intranet access (including access to corporate intranets, email, and individual productivity applications like customer relationship management, sales force, and field service automation). The Unlimited Data Plans and Features MAY NOT be used for any other purpose."
It does take some time to update all the marketing literature! From a forum post by Verizon VP Jeffery Nelson to this site:
"Been reading and want to acknowledge that we added the 5GB language to the Ts and Cs of our "Unlimited FOR" BroadbandAccess plan several months ago. And, as some have noted here, while the Ts and Cs have remained the same, for those who don't go through the fine-print and get their impression of what the "plan" is just from advertising, we've been migrating the visuals away from a big "unlimited for" to providing more detailed information about our monthly broadband plan."
Its nice to know that they admit it, finally .

Ampd Mobile Live: A Service Review

Using the Verizon EVDO network, youth-oriented Ampd Mobile launched it’s Ampd Live service last year in the US. Reports show that they had over 100K customers by the end of 2006, with revenues well over $100/user/month.
Ampd Live offers 3G cellular services, including broadcast live content and VOD (video-on-demand services. Partially funded by MTV – Ampd offers content targeted to the younger set, such as viral videos, movies such as Happy Feet and movie trailers, Comedy Central, a new animated series called Lil Hollywood, and live concerts and sporting events. We were pleased with the download times for content on Ampd Live – based on the Qualcomm Brew platform, it really didn’t take long before we were watching a viral video, or our favorite, the Paranormal News which featured a clip of Buzz Aldrin talking about how UFOs followed his spaceship during the moon landing flight. Services are also easy to navigate to using a very intuitive interface on the phone’s menu.
Rather than just adding network TV content, the team at Ampd appears to have taken to heart the market research that showed that cell phone video users don’t want to watch long programs on their phones, and prefer immediate “mobisodes” instead. Amped has lots of unique, short content on their Live service, including a show called the Iron Lunch Lady and Bush: Stinky or Sweet.
The ringtones downloadable from Ampd Live are mostly hip-hop or RAP, but there are some good sound effects like the siren from War of the Worlds or cartoon character voices. One thing about Ampd phones, the ringtones are LOUD even when set on the lowest setting. We think this is because their younger target audience have to be able to hear their phone ring above their iPods.
Overall, we think this is a great service – priced at a pay-as-you-go model that is sure to gain traction this year.
