Microsoft to buy Danger

It looks like Microsoft is on an aqcuisition streak. In addition to its recent decision to try and by Yahoo Microsoft is also making a move in the mobile space to buy Danger Inc. Danger makes the Sidekick smartphone, which is popular amongst the younger set. There's no information about how much Microsoft is paying for Danger or what they intend to do with it. Microsoft, of course, already develops the Windows Mobile platform for smart phones.

Survey conducted by voice messaging service finds texting dangerous
Added on 2007-08-07 10:46:00

In a recent survey commissioned by mobile messaging service, Pinger, Inc., found 89% of American adults think texting or sending emails while driving is a dangerous mix. In fact, that 89% believes texting while driving should be "outlawed", much like rustling cattle or tying damsels to traintracks. The survey also claims that 91% of US adults think texting while driving is just about as bad as drinking and driving. Unphased that 2% surveyed didn't think drinking and driving was dangerous, Pinger probed further to find that, of those surveyed, 57% texted while driving themselves! This is an incredibly shocking 38% increase from a study done earlier this year.
What then, are we, the hypocritical, reckless masses to do? Who will save us from ourselves? Don't fret, dear reader, as hero company Pinger has the cure for our lemming-like behavior: their product.
Seriously, though, while we don't condone any kind of distracted driving, we also don't condone using surveys like this to sell a product. There weren't any tests done to prove this product is any less distracting than texting itself, or by what margin this product would reduce the risk of a collision. The only statistic contained in this press release is that an overwhelming majority believe that dangerous behavior is dangerous, but nonetheless exhibit said behavior. The survey only asked 2,049 adults, the results were weighted in many ways that weren't adequately explained, and the part at the end about "pure probability samples" is just there to confuse readers.

Sidekick to get MySpace application
Added on 2007-06-18 09:16:00
by Randall Bennett
Helio won't be the only company with some MySpace action for the kids for long, as the Boy Genius Report uncovered an FAQ document revealing T-Mobile's Sidekick will get its own MySpace application. Current SK3 and SK ID users should be able to install it in the near future from the Sidekick catalog, and BGR says the app should come pre-installed on the next-gen Sidekick Zante.
The app gives MySpace addicts a BlackBerry-esque approach to the social networking behemoth's system, allowing for instant notification of new comments, friend requests, messages and photo comments. Doesn't look like the app shows off those painfully ugly custom profiles, since it's merely extracting profile information, but users will be able to see how many of their friends are online, add photos and otherwise participate in the MySpace community. No word on exactly when the app will hit the Sidekick catalog, but seeing how the FAQ is already on T-Mo's site, it should be fairly soon.

Sidekick ID Reviewed

by Richard Baguley
Crunchgear has landed a hot exclusive: they managed to get hold of one of the rumored Sidekick IDs, and they’e just run their review of the new $99 sidekick. They seem a little mixed about it; Crunchgear Editor John Biggs says that he’s “not disappointed by the SK ID, but I’m not amazed… The ideal audience, then, is someone in junior high, and I have no trouble seeing the value of this phone with such a young and fickle audience”. That’s hardly a ringing endorsement, but the ID isn’t designed to replace the Sidekick 3.
As the rumors indicated, the new Sidekick ID is smaller than the Sidekick 3, and has no Bluetooth or camera. It does have swappable bumpers, though; different colored bumpers (the plastic wrapper that goes around the case) will cost around $20 each, and will be available in a variety of colors. The review says that the Sidekick ID will be on sale on the 25th of April, from T-Mobile.

Leaked Photo of New Sidekick ID

CrunchGear has a photo of what appears to be the rumored new Sidekick: they claim that the Sidekick ID will be launched in the summer and will sell for $149 with a 2-year contract. It looks to be smaller than the Sidekick 3, and will have a new menu system and a trackball instead of the D-pad present on the Sidekick 3, although it is not clear if this is a pre-production model or not.
What it won’t have is a number of features that the Sidekick 3 has, including Bluetooth, a camera, MicroSD slot and an MP3 player. Still, most users won’t miss these, and it looks like it might be an interesting device for those who are looking for a simple device to help keep in touch; CrunchGear claim it will include an IM client that can handle AIM, Yahoo! and MSN as well as the standard email client that has been present on all of the Sidekicks. Oh and it will work as a phone, too.
