Sony-Ericsson at CTIA 2008: oldies but goodies
Added on 2008-04-02 21:33:00
by Alfredo Padilla
Since there's not a lot of new stuff going down at CTIA 2008 this year we thought we'd run out and grab some photos of phones that have been announced but we haven't got a chance to play with hands on yet. In the Sony-Ericsson booth we grabbled the C902 cybershot candybar with a five megapixel camera. Next up is the W980, a flip that reproduces Sony-Ericsson's excellent Walkman software on the exterior of the phone. Last, but not least, is the K850, a 3.2 megapixel Cybershot phone that's been rumored to be coming to AT&T forever. We have to admit that we're getting a little impatient to get some of these devices to U.S. shores. We haven't had a chance to do a full review on many Sony-Ericsson phones but those we have, or, one, the W580i (review), have impressed us. Photos after the jump.

Garmin Nuvifone at CTIA 2008
Added on 2008-04-02 01:51:00
by Mark Brezinski
Today, at the Mobile Focus event, we had the honor of staring at Garmin's Nuvifone through a glass bubble. We're not 100% sure why the phone needed to be kept so safe, but we default to Garmin's judgment.
The Nuvifone is basically a typical Garmin GPS device with a phone dropped on top. We asked why they decided to make their own handset, when they're already so aggressively trying to elbow their way into GPS solutions for other manufacturers. They said they wanted to provide solutions for all-in-one consumers who wanted a GPS/phone device. This argument isn't really convincing considering many phones already have GPS, but then again, the phone was top secret enough to merit the glass shield, so perhaps they know something they're just not telling us.
The Garmin Nuvifone will be available Q3 of 2008.

HTC Touch Dual at CTIA 2008
Added on 2008-04-02 01:28:00
by Mark Brezinski
Though the HTC Touch Dual has already been heavily covered, we still took a few moments to play around with it at the Mobile Focus event. As we previously mentioned, the Dual will be offered through Best Buy, unlocked. An HTC rep said that the company is aggressively moving towards unlocked US devices in an effort to give consumers more choice.

Samsung Instinct Video Preview
Added on 2008-04-01 22:46:00
by Mark Brezinski
As mentioned before, the Samsung Instinct is what we'd expect the child of an iPhone and the HTC Touch to look like. With more time to fool around with the phone, we noticed that the touch screen does seem to be a bit better than the Touch, and is about the same as the LG Prada. The haptic feedback is definitely a nice feature, though it's nowhere near as good as the localized vibrations seen on the Motorola ROKR E8. In any case, the touch screen is worse than the iPhone's, but better than a Windows Mobile phone.

Samsung Soul Video Preview

We didn't have much time with the Samsung Soul at Showstoppers, but based on our short experience, we believe we can describe it in four words: slightly better LG Venus.
After the jump are more words and a link to our video.

As you may or may not be aware, all of us at WirelessInfo are currently in Las Vegas for CTIA 2008. Since chances are that you, our readership, is not here, we are prepared to cover 110% of this year's show, in an effort to provide the most comprehensive coverage possible. Now, you might have simply written off that 110% as a clichéd hyperbole, but we meant what we said. Where, you may ask, will we dredge up that additional 10% of coverage? Pizza.
Confused? Read on -- if you dare.

UT Starcom Announces Three Entry Level Phones at the CTIA Show
Added on 2007-03-31 16:19:00
by Brenda Keener
|
Last week at the CTIA Wireless Show in Orlando, Florida, UT Starcom unveiled three entry level mobile phones scheduled for release to the US market in July 2007. The UT Starcom 1450 is a slim phone along the same lines as the previously introduced Slice, and weighs only 2.5 ounces. Images in the press suggest Virgin Mobile branding. It will offer a minimum feature set, with a VGA camera, Bluetooth, speaker phone, and mobile web browser.
The other two phones announced are clamshell phones - with the CDM7026 being the "bare-bones" offering with no external display, Bluetooth, or camera. It does feature a speakerphone and voice tagging. The CDM7076 has a display and a camera, but no Bluetooth.
UTS evidentally does believe that there is still a market for low end phones - only time will tell if they are correct.

Pantech Introduces New Line of International Phones
Added on 2007-03-30 20:08:00
by Rusty Weiss
Pantech has introduced to the world, via the recent CTIA show, mobile devices which will be released outside the U.S.
The line of International phones that Pantech rolled out was quite extensive. These international beauties, despite the low light in these photos, are simply unable to hide a crisp, vivid display, not to mention a very snappy metallic exterior. Each model appears to have a gratifying and fun design.

Honestech Releases MY-IPTV Anywhere for Mobile Users
Added on 2007-03-27 18:44:00
by Brenda Keener
|
The release of Honestech's MY-IPTV Anywhere Mobile product was announced today at the CTIA Show in Orlando. IPTV has long been touted as the next great innovation after VoIP, and will enable fully interactive TV with many more channels than are currently available over cable, or any of today's mobile TV offerings. This solution is software based rather than a full IPTV infrastructure, but will allow users to watch home TV programs anywhere, over a mobile device.
From the press release:
MY-IPTV Anywhere Mobile includes Honestech's original MY-IPTV Anywhere PC server and player software and new mobile player software for mobile and handheld devices. It also includes MY-IPBOX, an external USB 2.0 TV tuner device. MY-IPTV Anywhere server software has to be set up on the home computer to host content via IP to their mobile phone or Wi-Fi enabled mobile devices and any computer via a peer-to-peer connection. The product allows users to watch and control their TV from anywhere, and includes features such as channel surfing and changing, a personal video recorder, and scheduled recording from any computer. MY-IPTV Anywhere Mobile supports the latest H.264/MPEG-4 video compression technology standard for mobile phone, handheld devices, and any computer, from anywhere in the world.
Supported handsets include products from HP, LG, Sharp, Samsung and other Windows enabled devices. This product is available now from retail stores such as Frys Electronics, Amazon.com, and Home Depot.

Sprint Announces New Samsung Upstage at CTIA Show
Added on 2007-03-26 12:43:00
by Brenda Keener
|
This week at the CTIA show in Florida, Sprint revealed the new Samsung Upstage - a music phone designed to "upstage" its rivals in the increasingly competitive music phone arena.
The actual design of the phone is highly unusual - on one side it is a typical cell phone with a typical ho-hum 1.4" LCD screen. Flip it over, and it is a media player with a 2.1" LCD display and controls. It is designed to be an "i-Phone killer", with enhanced media features such as Bluetooth caller ID where the phone announces the name of the caller over the music you are playing. This allows you to decide whether the call you are receiving is important enough to interrupt your listening pleasure. It also supports Sprint TV which now has 50 channels of mobile entertainment. Also included are a 1.3 megapixel camera, and a MicroSD card slot plus included 64 MB card. This phone does ship with Sprint music software, and will allow music to be purchased from Sprint's online music store - which is the first ever service to allow music to be downloaded directly to a phone.
Per Phone News - Sprint has released pricing on their website of $149.99 for new and qualified upgrade customers, and $299.99 retail. Along with one commenter to the Phone News post , I was also unable to see this post on the Sprint site to verify.
