Noka To Pay 1.3M Euros To German State

Nokia has agreed to pay a compensation of 1.3 million Euros to the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, after closing their plant in the town of Bochum. A few months ago Nokia had announced that they would shift production from Bochum to Romania to cut costs.

Samsung 2Q Results Show Profits

Samsung Electronics also posted their second quarter results recently. The Korean giants reported a net income of 2.14 trillion won ($2.1 billion) up from 1.42 trillion won ($1.4 billion) a year ago. In another statement Samsung announced they sold 150 million phones in the US alone.

LG Electronics 2Q Results Show Profits

LG Electronics posted their second quarter’s results and their net income has climbed to 706.9 billion won from 384.6 billion won a year earlier. LG Electronics also rose to 4.1 percent to close at 113,500 won on the Korea Exchange.

Nokia's Profits Drop

Nokia admitted that their profits dropped this year when compared to last years performance. Nokia’s profit in 2008 was €1.10 billion, and €13.2 billion in 2007. That is almost a 61 percent drop.
"Looking at the rest of the year, we are optimistic and have had good feedback about the broad range of new products we expect to sell in our device business," said Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, the chief executive of Nokia.

RIM Launch $150 Million Mobile App Fund

RIM, RBC and Thomson Reuters announced a $150 million venture capital fund which would be open to all mobile platforms including mobile commerce, vertical and horizontal enterprise applications, communications, social networking etc. The Fund is to be co-managed by JLA Ventures and RBC Venture Partners.

Virgin Mobile USA and Helio in merger talks?

According to MocoNews, cell phone operators Virgin Mobile USA and Helio are contemplating merging their companies. SK Telecom, one of Helio's parent companies, would buy Virgin Mobile and in turn Virgin Mobile would purchase Helio in a sock transition. For now there is no official word but trade pundits do believe that this move doesn’t come much of surprise since both companies are not doing very well.

Sony Ericsson Working on a New Technology

Sony Ericsson on Wednesday will announced a new technology which will combine Adobe's Flash Lite and Java ME into a single Java application said Ulf Wretling, director of Sony Ericsson Developer World. This means that both technologies can compensate for each others shortcomings.
"They can mix and match," said Wretling. "A Java application can utilize graphics and UI components both from Java and from Flash."

Water-Powered Cell Phones by Samsung

Samsung Electro-Mechanics has developed a micro-fuel cell and hydrogen generator which would make it possible to power cellphones by water.
When the handset is turned on, metal and water in the phone react to produce hydrogen gas," explained Oh Yong-soo, vice president of Samsung Electro-Mechanics' research center. "The gas is then supplied to the fuel cell where it reacts with oxygen in the air to generate power." Other fuel cells need methanol to produce hydrogen, while Samsung's needs only water.

Nokia's Revenues and Profits Up

Nokia unlike other ill-fated mobile companies is doing extremely well and reported a profit in their current quarter. $20 billion (EUR 12.7 billion) worth of sales have been reported by the company, which indicates a 28% gain when compared to last year’s results.
"Nokia had strong profitability in the first quarter, with both operating profit and EPS up significantly year on year, said Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, Nokia CEO. "The overall device market developed as expected, with the greatest demand in emerging markets, where our position is very strong.

Glu Mobile Inc. announced it has received valid acceptances representing approximately 92.97% of the issued share capital of Superscape Group plc (“Superscape”). Because Glu declared the tender offer unconditional in all respects on March 7, 2008, Superscape’s results will be consolidated into Glu’s financial results as of that date.

FCC Closes 700MHz Auction at $19.5B

The FCC's 700MHz auction closed yesterday with bids totaling to a whopping $19.6 billion.What surprising is that the 700MHz auction surpassed the $19.1 billion combined total raised by the FCC in 68 other auctions over the last 15 years. FCC hasn’t disclosed the winners of the 1,099 licenses yet.
"The open platform will help foster innovation on the edge of the network, while creating more choices and greater freedom for consumers to use the wireless devices and applications of their choice," FCC Chairman Kevin Martin said in a statement. "A network more open to devices and applications can help ensure that the fruits of innovation on the edges of the network swiftly pass into the hands of consumers."

LiveWire Acquires Groove Mobile

LiveWire has acquired Groove Mobile for $14.5 million. For the uninitiated Groove Mobile is a music service for mobile operators like Sprint that provides them over-the-air music download services.
"The big idea is we can now deliver a full suite of personalization services - ringtones, audio and video downloads," and ringback tones, said Joel Hughes, president of LiveWire Mobile. "If you love U2, you want to buy a bundle of music, ringtones, ringback tones, and video and not have to go to four different places."

Looks like the flamboyance of Richard Branson isn’t translating to hard cash in the US. According to the latest business reports Branson has lost $250 million in Virgin Mobile USA after it shares fell as much as 54 percent on Thursday. Palm Inc. has announced that they will shut down all their retail stores over the next five weeks in the US. Palm phones will be sold via their web site, carrier stores, resellers and other retail and online channels. This hasn’t surprised anyone as there were already rumor floating around about an impending Palm lay-off.
“We continue to focus our company around core business initiatives and are consolidating more resources behind fewer programs in order to compete most effectively,” the company said in a statement.

Sanyo Confirms Kyocera Deal

Sanyo Electric Co confirmed its plan to sell its mobile unit to Kyocera Corp. Under Monday's agreement, about 2,000 employees in Sanyo's mobile phone operation will be transferred to Kyocera and Sanyo has also closed ties with telecommunications company KDDI Corp.
Sanyo said in a statement. "In order to meet the best interest of the business and its stockholders, Sanyo has ... concluded that a transfer of the business to Kyocera would be the ideal solution."

German unions urge Nokia Boycott

There are some new developments on the Nokia plant shut off story we covered yesterday. News is pouring in that certain German union groups are calling for consumer boycott of Nokia products. The German government is requesting Nokia to reconsider their decision of shutting off their pant in the western city of Bochum
Boycott Nokia!" Dietmar Muscheid, regional head of the Confederation of German Unions (DGB), said in a statement.
"Whoever buys a cellphone today should think about the choice they are making and what catastrophic consequences the company's actions in Bochum will have for thousands of workers," said Muscheid, who heads the DGB in the southwest state of Rhineland-Palatinate.

Nokia Shuts Down Mobile Plant

Nokia has confirmed that they will be shutting down their plant in Bochum, Germany, by mid-2008 and may cut up to 2,300 staff. Reuters is reporting that Nokia’s shares were down to 0.46 percent at 23.56 euros by 11:35 a.m. Nokia announced its plan to set up a mobile phone plant in Romania in March last year, investing 60 million euros ($89 million).
"We are moving production to existing plants, mainly in Romania, which will start during the first quarter," Nokia spokeswoman Arja Suominen said, and added recruitment had already begun.

Palm Reports Losses in Fiscal 2Q

All is not hunky dory in the Land of Palm as the company reported a loss in the fiscal second quarter. Palm claims that they have lost around $9.63 million, or 9 cents per share, on revenue of $349.63 million in the three months ended Nov. 30.
"It's a transformational time so things could be a bit lumpy, but we'll do our best to manage through that," Palm President and CEO Ed Colligan acknowledged in a conference call. "Ultimately we have to deliver and retake the mantle of leadership for design and execution."
