New Cheap Hands-Free Car Kit Uses Bluetooth Headset
Added on 2007-10-22 22:25:00
by Richard Baguley
Winplus were showing their new Yada YD-V1 Hands-Free Kit at the Showstoppers event before CTIA tonight, and it looks rather interesting. Most hands-free kits for cars use microphones and speakers that try to block or filter out the engine noise, but the Yada YD-V1 Hands-Free Kit uses a Bluetooth headset instead. To answer the phone, you just grab the small Bluetooth headset out of the cradle (which charges the headset, but not the phone) and jam it into your ear; picking up the headset answers the phone.
We weren't able to test the quality, but it's an interesting idea that is well priced (at $59.99) that doesn't require you to have cables everywhere and should sound better than most hands-free kits. It comes with holders that can mount it on a vent or on the dashboard; optional suction cup and cup holder mounts are available

Added on 2007-10-05 09:16:00
by Richard Baguley
Laura Moser of Slate was getting sick of her wired headset getting tangled up in things, so she decided to go with a Bluetooth headset instead. she reviewed at 8 of the top candidates, including models from Aleph, Nokia and Jabra. Her top pick? The $99.99 Plantronics Voyager 520, which she praised for being easy and comfortable to use, although the sound quality wasn't great. Her top pick for sound quality was the Jabra BT8010, which includes a second earpiece that lets it double as a pair of Bluetooth headphones.

Helio Fin comes out of left field to pleasantly surprise
Added on 2007-08-15 08:34:00
by Randall Bennett
Helio wins the "we keep it on the down-low" award for surprising us with the Fin. Helio's first clamshell rocks a generous three-megapixel camera, with a 2.3-inch screen, microSD (with a supplied 2gb card), EVDO and GPS. The device also offers turn by turn directions via Garmin, but interested parties will pay a pretty penny, as the service costs $3 per day to rent. Ouch.
The Fin is a pleasant surprise, and at $175 without a contract, or $125 with a contract, it certainly won't break the bank.

HTC Advantage hits US shores
Added on 2007-08-08 10:13:00
by Randall Bennett
HTC officially launched the Advantage X7501, and while the Windows Mobile 6 device isn't exactly a "phone," the triband HSDPA wonder rocks that lovely detachable keyboard, a 5" touchscreen VGA display, built-in GPS, WiFi, 8GB of built-in storage, 128 MB of RAM.... and the list goes on. The Advantage is really the device for someone looking for a sub-laptop that can also be used as a phone. Don't think, however, that this wonder device will be priced anywhere any phone you've ever seen, as the Advantage is $899 at CompUSA and Amazon.com.

Samsung releases SGH-t729 aka the Blast
Added on 2007-08-08 08:42:00
by Randall Bennett
SureType keyboards seem to be the trend among smartphone users looking to keep the typing speed up, but maintain a svelte size. T-Mobile, the first carrier to feature the keyboard tech in the BlackBerry Pearl, adds another Sammy SureType to the fold in the Blast. Other than the keys, the phone rocks a seemingly versatile email client (pop3, imap4, AOL, Yahoo and Gmail), A2DP, microSD, and a 1.3 megapixel camera, but notably missing from the specs is push email. Without push email, nor mention of any operating system in the press release, we doubt the phone will be a proper smartphone, but more of a messaging phone ala Samsung's u740, LG's enV or T-Mobile's SideKick. The phone hits store shelves any day now for $99 with a new contract.
