N95 firmware update increases battery life
Added on 2007-11-29 04:13:00
by Emily Price

Slashphone is reporting that the firmware update for the Nokia N95 helps improve the battery life on the handset. The firmware update added “Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling” which was expected to allow the battery to operate more efficiently and in turn produce a longer battery life on the phone. Have any of you downloaded the update? What has your experience been?

Bomb squad called for cell phone battery going boom
Added on 2007-10-10 15:44:00
by Mark Brezinski

The Des Moines bomb squad was called yesterday, after people reported they had heard an explosion coming from the local school. What the authorities found upon arriving was that some kid's cell phone battery exploded. We're assuming the reports came from an adjacent classroom that didn't think to run in and check before they placed the call, because even laptop batteries tend to produce fairly muffled explosions. While our expansive testing doesn't yet encompass battery explosions, going by the afore-linked video, we can't imagine anyone outside the school hearing anything. In any case, as silly as this story is, exploding batteries are quite dangerous, though they are incredibly interesting to watch, enough so that we felt the need to link that one video twice.

You can read more on this story here.

The prospect of shelling out almost 90$ for replacing the iPhone battery will put a dent in anyone’s happiness. However iPod Juice promises to provide some relief with its $25 DIY Kit, which comes with a whopping 10-year warranty. While DIY always make us a little iffy, the folks over at iPod Juice are demonstrating full faith in their 400 mAh lithium-ion product.

Solar-powered candybar phone
Added on 2007-07-23 12:41:00
by Randall Bennett

Adding features to phones is always the desire of our hearts, but we know that for every implementation of 3G or music playback, that means less battery life.  While this new solar powered handset from China isn't exactly going to solve the problem, it's a definite start.  The phone rocks a QVGA screen, microSD, "stereo speakers," Bluetooth and a 1.3-megapixel cam.  JAMP doesn't mention the specs on the solar panel, so it could just be cosmetic and not give a real battery hit, but c'mon, any sort of battery extending device gets some props, right?

iPhone battery life 50% of Apple's estimate?
Added on 2007-07-01 23:06:00
by Randall Bennett

We're still running the iPhone through all the tests possible (and you thought the weekend was for sleep, pshaw) and have some pretty big results thus far: looks like the iPhone didn't get all the battery life Apple had estimated.  We'd been hearing people having battery life problems in an informal dialog, but now some of our test results show the iPhone gets almost half of Apple's eight hours of promised talk time per charge.  We're still working to verify the results and finish some of our other crazy tests, but we'll keep you tested as we keep going.  We've got more than one phone, so after we run our initial tests, we'll run them again and again with different phones.

Willcom recalling over 100k batteries
Added on 2007-06-13 09:31:00
by Randall Bennett

It's no laptop battery recall (see a video demonstration for some time-wasting entertainment) but Willcom, an overseas carrier, says they're recalling about 134,000 batteries.  The company says they're not at risk for exploding, but they could heat up or become swollen after a physical shock.  No word on exactly how much physical shock it'd take, although we'd assume it's more than just a simple drop.  The company says five customers have contacted the company about the problematic batteries, but there aren't any consumer injuries reported.  Willcom also says the batteries won't catch fire nor explode because of some built-in safety devices.

Scary stuff when it's in your lap, but we find it a little more frightening when it's in your pocket.  Oh, and this time it isn't Sony's faulty batteries, it's actually NEC's problem.

T-Mobile Wing review goes live
Added on 2007-06-06 13:21:00
by Randall Bennett

Our review of the T-Mobile Wing just hit the main site, and our tests found some pretty interesting results.  The phone actually just took the crown as the top rated phone in our tests because the battery life is absolutely stellar.

14 hours of talk time.  10 and a half hours of music playback.  Nine hours of web browsing.

Not kidding.

The battery life may be stellar, but anyone looking for an excellent camera might want to look elsewhere.  Despite spec'ing at two megapixels, we found that the camera didn't beat the 1.3-megapixel cameras in either the Motorola Q or T-Mobile Dash.

Put the bad camera with a seemingly laggy interface and you might want to give the phone a go in person before you plunk down that cash.  This is the first phone we've tested with WinMo 6, and it does sport the same 200MHZ processor as other HTC devices, so we're not sure if it's T-Mobile's custom software lagging the device or if WinMo 6 is just heavier.  Either way, read the full review here.
