First Call: LG Voyager
Added on 2007-11-26 15:02:00
by Alfredo Padilla
The LG Voyager is positioned to be Verizon's iPhone killer, combining the touch screen interface we've seen in phones like the LG Prada with the clamshell QWERTY design that has been popular in the LG EnV and other similar phones. The Voyager's touch screen interface isn't as smooth as the iPhone's, but it does a solid job and we like the haptic feedback that makes the phone vibrate when you touch the screen. We also like the large and comfortable QWERTY keyboard that you reveal when you open the clamshell. Read on for our complete First Call.

Verizon Updates Terms Of Service
Added on 2007-11-05 09:57:00
by Tanya Palta
Verizon after getting hit where it hurts the most (the wallet) has now smartened up and defined what they consider “unlimited”. Here is the new clause where Verizon reserves the right to play spoilsport!
“If usage exceeds 5 GB per line during any billing period, we reserve the right to reduce throughput speeds of any application that would otherwise exceed such speed to a maximum of approximately 200 Kbps. These speeds are subject to change, in our reasonable discretion, in order to address network issues.”

Samsung U900 for Verizon
Added on 2007-08-22 09:56:00
by Alfredo Padilla
Phone Arena has some nice shots of the latest addition to Samsung's ultimate lineup of phones. The U900 will be available on Verizon Wireless in the US and looks like it will be a nice looking clamshell handset. Like many of Samsung's Ultimate phones the U900 has nicely specced camera at 3 megapixels. The photo to the right shows that the lens housing is huge, much bigger than the small pin sized camera lenses we normally see on phones. Of course we won't know for sure about the camera's performance until we get it in our labs and run it through our tests, which we hope will be soon. Check the link above for some more pics.

Verizon Wireless acquires Rural Cellular
Added on 2007-07-30 11:47:00
by Mark Brezinski
Verizon Wireless has recently announced they are set to acquire Rural Cellular. Rural Cellular, true enough to its name, has focused on providing wireless service for rural areas since they were founded in 1990. Rural's president and CEO, Richard Ekstrand, claims the merger is "in the company's best interest," as well as in the best interest of the customers. We believe it might also have something to do with Rural being close to $2 billion in debt. Part of the deal terms state that Verizon buys the debt with the company, as well as shelling out $757 million to Rural's common stockholders.
By assimilating Rural Cellular, Verizon is also assimilating about 700,000 customers. An item of note to these 700k is that they are split up into regions of either CDMA or GSM. Verizon plans on converting all GSM customers over to CDMA, but will still maintain the GSM networks to provide roaming for other carriers' customers.
The deal is set to close -- pending approval from shareholders, government agencies, etc. -- in the first half of 2008. You can read more about it here.

J. D. Power & Associates report wireless customer service on the rise
Added on 2007-07-26 14:15:00
by Mark Brezinski
J. D. Power and Associates has just released their study on the quality of customer service for major wireless companies. It seems that customer service quality is on the increase. Only 28% of customers with service problems contacted their carrier, down from the 48% reported in the last study. Of those who did call, 81% stated their claims were addressed in a timely manner, a 6% increase over the past three years. J.D. deduced that call quality issues have improved, as well as overall customer service.
T-Mobile again topped the list for overall customer satisfaction, followed by AT&T, VzW, Alltel and Sprint in that order. The margins between each company were far from staggering, as T-Mobile and Sprint were only separated by 16 points. Astute readers will notice that Amp'd Mobile was left off this list. As you very well know, WirelessInfo.com is all about thorough testing, so we did our own survey to try and fill in J.D.'s oversight. Our results showed an odd dichotomy. Amp'd users were dissatisfied with their service being canceled on the 31st, but incredibly satisfied with the Amp'd "optional bill payment" policy*.
[via PR Newswire]
*This is obviously a joke; no one actually uses Amp'd.

Cell Networks Swamped, Students Turn to Texting at Virginia Tech
Added on 2007-04-17 02:06:00

As the cell phone network in Blacksburg, Virginia wilted under the heavy demands placed on it by frantic Virginia Tech students and parents trying to contact each other, many cell phone users turned to texting to get their messages through. Thirty-three people were killed by a lone gunman during Monday’s morning shooting rampage on campus, according to news reports.
According to a Verizon Wireless spokesman quoted by the Roanoke Times, the cell phone network experienced four times its usual “busy time” usage Monday as news of the massacre spread.

Cell Phones Aren’t Kids Play Anymore
Added on 2007-04-12 22:25:00
by Rusty Weiss
Verizon Wireless and Cingular have dropped their kid-oriented cell phones, the Migo and Firefly respectively.
Despite a strong push towards developing the children’s market, both the Migo and Firefly had some distinct issues to contend with. While the intent was noble, the lack of a typical keypad could be seen as a hindrance to operation. Most kids from kindergarten on are well versed in using a computer, let alone a cell phone. So limiting the buttons in an attempt to create boundaries for these kids is counterproductive. Standard cell phone designs seem to be preferred.

One Teenager's Review of the LG Chocolate Phone
Added on 2007-03-22 19:28:00
by Brenda Keener
|
The fastest growing target market for new, sexy phones is the teen market. True to his demographic, my teen could hardly wait until his new "ultra-cool" LG Chocolate arrived from Verizon Wireless! Curious as to his opinion after roughly one month of use, I caught him between calls to get the scoop.
According to Eric, the phone's best features are its ease of use, great interface, and "awesome" 1.3 megapixel camera with multistep zoom and flash. He also really likes the built-in alarm feature.
On the downside, its sexy design has left it with a very small keyboard that larger fingers have issues using. He also said that the touchpad is ultra sensitive - and sometimes he sends out text messages accidentally before he is finished with them. The sensitivity adjustment feature didn't help much.
The phone is dubbed a "music" phone, but came with no music software of its own. Also a downer, from a teen perspective, was that the stock ringtones "sucked" and no games shipped with the phone.

Review of the Motorola Krzr K1m Fire (Verizon Wireless)
Added on 2007-03-19 20:56:00
by Rusty Weiss
Motorola is rolling out another in a line of Krzr handsets, cousin to the popular Razr series.
According to the CNET review, while the basic elements appear to be all intact, certain features suffer in quality. Call quality is solid, but audio and video quality is lacking, and the 1.3-megapixel camera takes some seemingly weak photos.
