Boy Genius reveals Windows Mobile 6.1 upgrade features
Added on 2007-12-07 22:40:00
by Alfredo Padilla
Looks like The Boy Genius got his hands on a phone with that new Windows Mobile upgrade we've been hearing about and has decided to give a video walk through of the new features. We have to say that the home screen looks almost identical to the T-Mobile Shadow home screen, but the Shadow definitely doesn't have the rest of the features revealed.
These include things like copy & past support, threaded text messaging and Internet Explorer looks like it might finally catch up with modern browsers by adding a full screen zoom feature that lets you get around full web pages easily. Phones with the new Windows Mobile update are supposed to start becoming available in the first half of next year, and although the update will be available for older handsets it will be up to the manufacturers and carriers whether it will be coming to a phone near you.

First Call: T-Mobile Shadow
Added on 2007-11-09 12:50:00
by Alfredo Padilla
We just got the T-Mobile Shadow in and we have to say that first impressions are good. The Shadow is the latest Windows Mobile Standard device from T-Mobile and is manufactured, of course, by HTC. Sporting a slide out SureType-esque keyboard with two letters to each key the Shadow is small, slim and attractive. We got the "copper" version but it is also available in "sage". The Shadow feels very solid, in stark contrast to the Pantech Duo, another Windows Mobile Standard device we're in the process of reviewing. We also like the large 2.6 inch display and the rotating D-Pad that allows you to quickly scroll up/down lists. Read on for the rest of our first call.

I-Mate Ultimate 6150 approved by FCC
Added on 2007-08-29 10:49:00
by Alfredo Padilla
The I-Mate Ultimate 6150 has just been approved by the FCC. This Windows Mobile 6 handset sports a 2 megapixel camera, VGA screen, and support for global 3G/HSDPA, meaning it will work both in Europe and Asia as well as on AT&T's 3G network. I-Mate has struggled since HTC decided to stop allowing the company to resell it's handsets, and it's Ultimate lineup of phones is an attempt to grab the high ground in the marketplace by selling high end handsets with impressive spec sheets. Check out I-Mate's spec sheet for the 6150 here.

BlackBerry Pearl for Spring coming on Black Friday?
Added on 2007-08-24 15:57:00
by Alfredo Padilla

Boy Genius Report is, well... reporting... that the BlackBerry Pearl 2 for Sprint may be released around Thanksgiving, which should make for some interesting fist fights to get to the phone on Black Friday. Admitting the tenuousness of their information BGR also states that: "the date we were given was more like a timeframe, please consider it such", which indicates to us that you may not want to bank on this. Also, as an additional crumb thrown in, they state that a CDMA Curve should be coming in Q1 of 2008.

by Alfredo Padilla
In today's look at the latest news on the Apple iPhone (a series we call iHype) we look at Apple 's just released in depth tour of the iPhone that touches on some functionality that we've not yet seen. Below is our roundup of these features, including Word and Excel document viewers, listening to music in standby and confirmation that you can create new contacts on the phone. We also found out that you can control music playback using the included headset. One squeeze for play/pause, two squeezes for next track and three squeezes for carpal tunnel syndrome. Still missing is any information about the camera interface or the calendar application.

iPhone Supports Word and Excel Files
Added on 2007-06-22 12:49:00
by Alfredo Padilla
One of the biggest issues that people have brought up in regards to the iPhone is the seeming lack of support for viewing business documents like Word and Excel files. It seems that either Apple was listening, or they were going to include this support all along. At about the 13:28 mark in Apple's new iPhone tour they mention that there is support for viewing several types of documents, including Word and Excel documents. Of course there's been an ongoing war of words about whether the iPhone is a worthy business device, perhaps this will convince people one way or another.
No word yet on support for Powerpoint files, nor do we know if you will be able to store documents on the phone for viewing outside of email. We'll be following up with additional information about the goodies in this tour shortly.

Sharp's Advanced/W-Zero3 [es]: Long name, long form factor
Added on 2007-06-07 14:06:00
by Randall Bennett
We'll give Sharp a few awards with their latest QWERTY handset, but these are the kind of awards you don't really like too much. Chief among them: the award for longest phone, but coming up a close second is The award for longest name (Advanced/W-ZERO3 [es].) Granted, we haven't seen the phone up close and in person yet, so we can't have a real perspective for how long it truly is... but some of us are from the school of thought that if the phone hangs off your face, it's probably too long.
Dubious awards aside, tit looks like a pretty solid Windows Mobile handset running a custom version of Smartphone, Japanese edition. Japanese consumers might dig the three inch wide LCD at 480x800 res, 520 MHz processor, WiFi and MicroSD, but without Bluetooth support, it won't be the top of the pack. It doesn't look like there's a camera on there either, but perhaps smartphone users in Japan won't miss that either.
Bottom line? Smartphone geeks might dig the form factor, but no Bluetooth nor camera equals no dice for us.

Sony Ericsson P1 Receives FCC Approval
Added on 2007-06-01 12:17:00
by Alfredo Padilla
Look what just came down from the FCC, Sony Ericsson's latest smart phone, the P1 (in this case the P1c) has just been approved by our favorite American agency. Unfortunately it doesn't look like there is support for the 850 Mhz band used here in the good ol' U.S.A. Although we aren't surprised, we have to say we are disappointed (again). All the other goodness is there though (dual use keyboard, scroll wheel, 3 megapixel camera, UIQ 3), so if you've got good 1900 Mhz coverage in your area you can now (legally) get the P1. Links after the jump.

Dear Diary, the HTC Vox S710 is my BFF ♥
Added on 2007-04-28 01:13:00
by Rusty Weiss
A member of Pocketnow.com is offering their thoughts on the HTC Vox S710 by posting a journal of sorts, reviewing the device with daily updates.
The blogger, Brandon Miniman, was recently selected for the Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP) award in the Mobile Devices realm. As such, he is very qualified to make a good, solid assessment of the S710.
The Vox S710 sports a couple of firsts in the mobile industry. First off, it is the first to test the proverbial market waters with the Windows Mobile 6 platform. Secondly, it is the first smartphone to be laced with a slide-out keyboard.
The S710, as was adeptly pointed out by Miniman, is a very non-descript device on the surface. That is, until people take notice with the keyboard, and the platform.
We are looking forward to some more insight on this very intriguing device.

March’s Most Popular Phones

Have you been wondering what the most popular cell phones were this past month?
Brighthand has done the research for you. They’ve published a list of the most popular handhelds and smartphones in March.
The list is based on the number of page views for each product, so they’re a little less than scientific in their polling procedure. Despite this, it is some pretty interesting reading.

ASUS launches Pegasus
Added on 2007-03-16 21:03:00
by Emily Price
Yesterday ASUS launched the P526 "Pegasus" smartphone. The 115 gram GPS/PDA/cellphone seems to do it all with WiFi, a built-in 2-megapixel still camera, and quad-band EDGE connectivity. The one huge downside to the phone? It's not 3G. It's still one pretty big small powerhouse of a smartphone. Engadget was able to get a hands-on with the phone and has a photo gallery up for your viewing pleasure.
