8am for iPhone 3G release

Looks like those rumors about an early morning for anyone who wants an iPhone 3G are correct. AT&T confirmed today that they will be opening their doors at 8:00 AM on July 11th to sell the iPhone 3G. We haven't heard anything about Apple stores but we'd be surprised if they don't follow suit. The increased pricing plans have also been confirmed, with the 450 minute entry level plan with unlimited data starting at $69.99, ten dollars more than the first gen iPhone's plan. Oh, and those of you who aren't eligible for an upgrade can expect to pay an extra $200 for the iPhone. The plans also don't include text messages, so you'll have to shell out extra for those. Start your campouts!

Talking iPhone: One step forward, two steps back

Now that we've put about a day between ourselves and the ridiculous hype surrounding any Steve Jobs keynote address we can take a step back and consider what was revealed at yesterday's World Wide Developer Conference. Our first impressions are: eh. The addition of 3G and GPS to the iPhone have long been expected, and frankly we were hoping for more. Still, an upgrade is an upgrade and the price cut certainly sweetens the pot. Of course what Apple giveth with one hand AT&T taketh with the other.

iPhone 3G data plans to be more expensive
Added on 2008-06-09 15:14:00

According to a press release put out by AT&T today the prices for the iPhone data plans are going to go up. For standard users you'll have to pay $30 per month for unlimited data and business users will have to pay $45 per month. Both of these are significantly more expensive than the $20 a month plan the original iPhone required.
This is pretty crappy. AT&T is already making money hand over fist on iPhone users as they are required to have a data plan. Increasing the charge by 50% or more just because 3G has been added is silly. If you think about it over the life of the contract this will cost regular customers $240. So much for that price drop.

Apple's newly announced 3G iPhone has just passed through the FCC. We're poring over the documents right now and will update this post shortly.
Update: Support for 3G on AT&T's bands is confirmed. We don't know if there is support for international bands as this is not tested by the FCC. The model name of the iPhone 3G is A1241.

Apple announces new iPhone 3G
Added on 2008-06-09 13:41:00

Today Apple took the wraps off their new iPhone with 3G support and GPS. The device will see a price drop with the 8GB version available for $199 and the 16GB version for $299. Sporting beveled edges, a plastic back, improved audio and a flush headphone jack. The signature feature, of course, is 3G support, with Steve Jobs demonstrating that page that took 59 seconds to load on the slower EDGE network took only 21 seconds via 3G. Apple also claims solid battery life, 300 hours of standbye, five hours of talk time (10 hours on EDGE), 5 to 6 hours of browsing, 7 hours of video and 24 hours of audio. We'll see how well these hold up when we get the phone into the labs.
What we didn't see that we had hoped for was an updated camera and bigger storage.

Monday's the big day (we hope) the day when Steve Jobs will take the stage at Apple's World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) and reveal what's in store for the next generation iPhone. The rumors have been flying hot and heavy for the past month, but what are we really going to see on Monday? Here's our list, sorted by likelihood.
