A Beta client of the MSN Direct for Windows Mobile Standard Edition has been released by Microsoft. The plug-in can be downloaded for free on the Microsoft Direct website. For the uninitiated, MSN Direct uses SPOT watch technology which makes it possible to use the Internet for data delivery instead of FM. Via the plug-in news, weather, and stocks will be directly displayed on the homescreen.

Microsoft to buy Danger
Added on 2008-02-11 09:14:00
by Alfredo Padilla

It looks like Microsoft is on an aqcuisition streak. In addition to its recent decision to try and by Yahoo Microsoft is also making a move in the mobile space to buy Danger Inc. Danger makes the Sidekick smartphone, which is popular amongst the younger set. There's no information about how much Microsoft is paying for Danger or what they intend to do with it. Microsoft, of course, already develops the Windows Mobile platform for smart phones.

Nokia Smartphones to be Powered by Windows Mobile?
Added on 2008-02-08 04:10:00
by Tanya Palta

If certain rumors are to be believed than Microsoft is in talks with Nokia to develop Windows powered Nokia smartphones. Of course don’t dream of a Windows Mobile Nokia device popping up anytime soon.

Microsoft’s Mobile Communications Business International Marketing Director John Starkweather confirmed with iTWire that they indeed are leaning over that direction:

"they obviously have significant investments in Symbian … there are a lot of places where we have significant synergies and we would love to see the day where those synergies would extend completely with Windows Mobile."

HTC S730 (Wing) coming to AT&T?
Added on 2008-01-18 21:44:00
by Alfredo Padilla

Just dropping from the FCC was information about a version of HTC's S730 (aka Wing) Windows Mobile Standard handset. We've reported about some first looks at the S730, but one thing that it's missing is support for AT&T's 3G network. The version that just came down the FCC pipe, called the Wing200, has support for 3G on the 850 Mhz and 1900 Mhz bands, which AT&T uses.

This indicates that the handset might be coming to AT&T, giving customers another choice of Windows Mobile Standard device with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard apart from the Pantech Duo. In addition to the slide out keyboard the S730 from HTC sports a 2 megapixel camera, MicroSD expansion, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and a 2.4 inch QVGA display. We'll see if the new Wing200 does better or worse than those specs.

Windows Mobile 7 shots revealed
Added on 2008-01-06 18:08:00
by Alfredo Padilla

Looks like someone decided to leak some information about the upcoming Windows Mobile 7 update. We've already heard about the upgrades coming in Windows Mobile 6.1, but these seem to reflect a major upgrade in the software rather than incremental updates. According to the InsideMicrosoft blog Windows Mobile 7 will include better support for a touch interface, including gestures and multi-touch features. You'll also be able to shake or twist the phone to activate features, as we've seen on some Sony Ericsson devices already.

The visuals have also been upgraded, with a more Vista-like appearance and better support for interacting with the phone with your finger. The web browser is also expected to be updated to better compete with the iPhone's Safari and S60's Web and the media experience is also being upgraded. Of course none of this is confirmed, and Windows Mobile 7 isn't expected to be available until 2009, so there's a lot of time between now and then for things to change. If this does turn out to be true, though, we'll be very happy to see a lot of Windows Mobile's shortcomings addressed.

Vodaphone lineup leak
Added on 2008-01-06 14:05:00
by Mark Brezinski

The astute guys at Boy Genius eagle-eyed a few new handsets Vodaphone name-dropped in a presentation. Fortunately for us and you, noble reader, they posted the slides. There was a mystery handset (pictured right) as well as two handsets each from Nokia, BlackBerry, HP, and Palm.

The Nokia phones were the E66 (Dora), and E71 (Liam). Logic dictates the E66 is a sequel to the E65. This means it's likely to have great enterprise software, VOIP and SIP capabilities (so you can forward desk calls to your VOIP), and, more than likely, Nokia's garbage 2-Megapixel camera.

The two BlackBerry devices were the Pearl 8110 and a mysterious 8000 series device that was previously fabled as a flagship 9000 series device.

HP's handsets are the Silver and Oak. Both will run Windows Mobile and have GPS and wi-fi.

Palm's devices, the Drucker and Wanda, will also run Windows Mobile and sport GPS. The Drucker will have wi-fi. The Wanda looks suspiciously like the Treo 500v.

Free alternate UI for Windows Mobile phones
Added on 2008-01-02 14:43:00
by Mark Brezinski

Though not the first custom user interface for Windows Mobile phones, PointUI (official site) is one of the cheapest. Tipping the price scales at $0.00, PointUI is a very good looking interface that's free. It's definitely more of a finger-friendly interface than the current Windows Mobile Professional user interface, obviating the need for a stylus. We'd recommend anyone who isn't satisfied with PointUI to check it out.

Boy Genius reveals Windows Mobile 6.1 upgrade features
Added on 2007-12-07 22:40:00
by Alfredo Padilla

Looks like The Boy Genius got his hands on a phone with that new Windows Mobile upgrade we've been hearing about and has decided to give a video walk through of the new features. We have to say that the home screen looks almost identical to the T-Mobile Shadow home screen, but the Shadow definitely doesn't have the rest of the features revealed.

These include things like copy & past support, threaded text messaging and Internet Explorer looks like it might finally catch up with modern browsers by adding a full screen zoom feature that lets you get around full web pages easily. Phones with the new Windows Mobile update are supposed to start becoming available in the first half of next year, and although the update will be available for older handsets it will be up to the manufacturers and carriers whether it will be coming to a phone near you.

Vista Sideshow Coming to Windows Mobile?
Added on 2007-11-24 13:27:00
by Tanya Palta

Looks like the Windows Vista Sideshow may just come to the Windows Mobile. It may sound a tad far-fetched to some however there is evidence to back up this claim. Some enterprising soul out there unearthed a new Software Developers Kit on the Windows Sideshow Team blog which highlights features like;

    * Portrait QVGA UI designed for remote controls
    * New Universal driver for Windows SideShow that supports USB and Bluetooth communication
    * New Bluetooth menu commands

So what does this entail? If indeed MS is working on this, then not only can you connect your mobile device to your Windows Media Center but also use it as a remote.

First Call: T-Mobile Shadow
Added on 2007-11-09 12:50:00
by Alfredo Padilla

We just got the T-Mobile Shadow in and we have to say that first impressions are good. The Shadow is the latest Windows Mobile Standard device from T-Mobile and is manufactured, of course, by HTC. Sporting a slide out SureType-esque keyboard with two letters to each key the Shadow is small, slim and attractive. We got the "copper" version but it is also available in "sage". The Shadow feels very solid, in stark contrast to the Pantech Duo, another Windows Mobile Standard device we're in the process of reviewing. We also like the large 2.6 inch display and the rotating D-Pad that allows you to quickly scroll up/down lists. Read on for the rest of our first call.

First Call: Pantech Duo
Added on 2007-11-01 07:50:00
by Alfredo Padilla

The Pantech Duo is the latest Windows Mobile Standard handset to join AT&T's stable, and it has been eagerly awaited by fans of Windows Mobile because of its innovative form factor. Like it's cousin the Helio Ocean (also made by Pantech), the Duo has a dual sliding mechanism that reveals a full QWERTY keyboard when slid to the side and a standard phone keypad when slid up. Although a good idea in principle, the Duo's implementation leaves something to be desired. Read all of our first impressions after the jump.

Added on 2007-10-23 03:49:00
by Tanya Palta

Good news for Windows Mobile users. If reports from PocketInfo.NL are to be believed then one will be privy to a new interface of Windows Mobile 6.1 by February 2008. The interface will be reminiscent of the Windows Media Centet by Microsoft and expect improvements in Wi-Fi functionally and Bluetooth pairing.

First Call: HTC Touch
Added on 2007-10-19 14:51:00
by Alfredo Padilla

The HTC Touch was the first of what we expect will be many HTC handsets running the TouchFlo interface over Windows Mobile Professional. Sprint is currently the only carrier in the US to pick up the Touch, and we're sure they're positioning the device as a competitor to the iPhone. In this First Call we give you our impressions of the Touch as available from Sprint. More after the jump.

HTC shows off the Touch Cruise (Polaris)
Added on 2007-10-19 08:27:00
by Alfredo Padilla

Looks like HTC's been showing off their latest Windows Mobile handset, the Touch Cruise (aka Polaris) looks like quite the little work horse. Pocketinfo.nl (Dutch) picked up the information at an HTC event in the Netherlands and apparently the Touch Cruise sports GPS, quad-band GSM and tri-band HSDPA support, a 3 megapixel auto-focus camera, 400 Mhz processor and 128 MB of RAM. According to rumors this will be the updated version of HTC's Athena, which lacks a QWERTY keyboard, but there are no verified pics of the actual device available right now. Based on the name we assume the "cruise" part refers to the GPS while the "touch" part probably indicates it will be running HTC's TouchFlo interface.

HTC to Sprint: Touch me
Added on 2007-10-17 08:12:00
by Alfredo Padilla

We've heard rumors of this for awhile now, but this morning we got confirmation that Sprint will be carrying the HTC Touch. The Touch is a Windows Mobile 6 device that sports HTC's TouchFlo technology, which is an interface addition that allows users to more easily interact with the device using their finger. This includes things like finger scrolling in contacts and the web browser. It doesn't look like Sprint user will be able to get their hands on HTC's recently announced Touch Dual yet, instead they'll have to make do with the older Touch that lacks a slide out keypad. It will be rocking EVDO and support for 4GB Micro SD cards though, and will also support Sprint services like their music store and TV service.

The Touch is likely Sprint's answer to the iPhone, and given that it has been extremely successful overseas it's probably a good choice. The Touch should be available November 4th.

BenQ E72 Smartphone
Added on 2007-10-01 14:16:00

The BenQ E72 is the latest smartphone from the company and is quite a relief from its bulky counterparts. The E72 runs on the WM6 OS and will be available in select countries in the Asia Pacific and European regions in Q4, 2007. The phone supports GSM/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 MHz and comes equipped with the now mandatory 2MP camera.

HTC unveils 4th quarter lineup
Added on 2007-10-01 08:58:00
by Alfredo Padilla

HTC today unveiled their lineup for the fourth quarter of 2007. In addition to a version of their Touch device with a slide out keyboard/keypad called the Touch Dual they have also added the HTC S730, an update to their small candy bar smart phone with a slide out QWERTY Keyboard. The S730 adds 3G support and a faster processor compared to its predecessor the S710. The third phone unveiled was the HTC P6500. This is a larger handset with a 3.5 inch touch screen and includes enterprise focused tools like a barcode and fingerprint scanning capabilities.

The Touch Dual is interesting because it will be coming in two variants, one with a standard phone keypad and another with a "suretype-esque" QWERTY keyboard. It will also be sporting an updated version of HTC's TouchFlo technology, which allows you to more easily interact with the touch screen using just your fingers. Unfortunately it is still a Tri-Band GSM device and only supports the European/Asian flavor of 3G. We have to admit we find this a little annoying. HTC has been a leader in creating phones that support global GSM and 3G standards and they seem to have abandoned this with the Touch Dual.

Pictures and links after the jump.

Sony Ericsson To Offer Windows Mobile Smart Phones?
Added on 2007-09-19 14:41:00
by Richard Baguley

Is Sony Ericsson going to follow in Palm's footsteps and offer phones running two operating systems? This report at Digitimes claims that it is, saying that the company has asked HTC to manufacture a smart phone for them running Windows Mobile instead of their usual Symbian OS. The report claims that the phone will go on sale in 2008. This is interesting for two reasons: if true, it would be the first time that HTC has made a phone for Sony Ericsson, and it would also be a big shift for SE; they have previously been a stanch supporter of Symbian.

HTC Juno for T-Mobile USA?
Added on 2007-09-12 13:37:00
by Alfredo Padilla

According to a Boy Genius Report source the HTC Juno will be coming to T-Mobile in the U.S. in October. It will be a Windows Mobile Professional device with a slider form factor and what looks like a suretype QWERTY keyboard. BGR speculates that it will be sporting HTC's TouchFlo technology, which allows you to more easily manipulate the interface with your finger via the touch screen. However the picture shows the home and back buttons that are used on the standard version of Windows Mobile, which lacks a touch screen. If it does have a touch screen with TouchFlo we're sure that it's being positioned as an alternative to the iPhone.

I-Mate Ultimate 6150 approved by FCC
Added on 2007-08-29 10:49:00
by Alfredo Padilla

The I-Mate Ultimate 6150 has just been approved by the FCC. This Windows Mobile 6 handset sports a 2 megapixel camera, VGA screen, and support for global 3G/HSDPA, meaning it will work both in Europe and Asia as well as on AT&T's 3G network. I-Mate has struggled since HTC decided to stop allowing the company to resell it's handsets, and it's Ultimate lineup of phones is an attempt to grab the high ground in the marketplace by selling high end handsets with impressive spec sheets. Check out I-Mate's spec sheet for the 6150 here.
