Samsung Instinct on June 20th for $129.99
Added on 2008-06-18 08:37:00
by Alfredo Padilla
Sprint confirmed today that the Samsung Instinct will be available on June 20th for $129.99. Although Sprint has not been confirmed before we've heard numbers ranging from $200 - $300, which indicates that Sprint may be moving to cut the price in order to better compete with the new $199 iPhone. Like the iPhone the Instinct is a touch screen phone with advanced capabilities, although it does not run a smart phone operating system. We expect to get our review phone in shortly and we'll have our usual thorough review up shortly thereafter, so keep an eye on the site.

Parting Shots: Samsung Ace
Added on 2008-04-29 12:58:00
by Alfredo Padilla
We wrapped up our review of the Samsung Ace from Sprint today and the phone turned out to be a solid smart phone. That's not to say that it doesn't have its negatives, however, starting with the poor camera, lack of Office Mobile and a price tag twice as high as comparable smart phones. The Ace's key feature is the ability to function on both Sprint's CDMA network and international GSM networks. This makes it a big winner for international travelers. If this isn't an issue for you we recommend saving $100 and going with the Palm Centro (review), which provides similar functionality. If you're not married to Sprint you can also go grab the Blackjack II (review), which is very similar to the Ace but with some upgrades like a better camera, from AT&T for half the price as well. Plus it will work on any international GSM network as well.

First Call: Samsung Ace
Added on 2008-04-10 14:50:00

The Samsung Ace from Sprint is basically the CDMA version of the Blackjack, which has been available from AT&T for awhile now. The Ace lacks the updates we saw on the Blackjack II (review)like the two megapixel camera, but it's not identical to the original Blackjack either. In particular the phone seems to have addressed one of the biggest issues of the original BlackJack: the D-Pad. On the Blackjack the D-Pad was flush with the surrounding buttons, which led to constant mistaken presses. On the Ace the D-Pad has been raised above the surrounding buttons, although it still seems a little on the small side.
The QWERTY keyboard on the Ace is also different, with each key sloping above and below a center peak. The keys are spaced more closely together than the original Blackjack. In our initial use of the keyboard we found that they were too close together, leading to mistaken presses. We also found the feel of the keyboard to be a little strange. We'll see how we do in our actual words per minute test after we've spent some more time with the handset, but one of the things we liked about the original Blackjack was that the keys were comfortably spaced. Check out our gallery of photos after the jump and expect the full review in a week or so.

Parting Shots: Samsung M520
Added on 2008-04-08 09:31:00
by Alfredo Padilla
After returning from CTIA 2008 we were able to wrap up our look at the Samsung M520 (review), a slim slider phone for Sprint that sports some impressive features like GPS at a fairly low price point. After spending a couple of weeks with the device we've come away with a generally positive feeling about the phone as an entry-level device. It's not perfect, for example talk time is shorter than average and the camera is poor, but given that you'll be paying only $49.99 for this handset with a two-year contract you have to expect some compromises. For those looking for a budget handset on Sprint the M520 should definitely be on your list for consideration. If you want some more functionality you can step up to the Palm Centro (review) for about twice the price.

Sprint delays Xohm
Added on 2008-04-03 10:21:00
by Mark Brezinski
Engadget has apparently kidnapped a Sprint PR person and beat some priviliged information out of them. Among the tidbits was the news that Xohm, Sprint's commercial WiMAX, will not be available this month, as was planned. Instead, it will launch "later on in the year," which means any time from summer to seconds before '09. Of course, this delay probably won't mean additional coverage will be offered. Therefore, unless you're around Chicago or the Baltimore-D.C. area, you'll still be out of luck.

Sprint will incorporate its Nextel Direct Connect push-to-talk (PTT) service into the upcoming Sanyo Pro-200 and the Sanyo Pro-700 handsets. Powered by Qualcomm's QChat(R) technology, these phones will be able to set up PTT calls in less than one second and also handle one-to-one interoperability.

Samsung Instinct Video Preview
Added on 2008-04-01 22:46:00
by Mark Brezinski
As mentioned before, the Samsung Instinct is what we'd expect the child of an iPhone and the HTC Touch to look like. With more time to fool around with the phone, we noticed that the touch screen does seem to be a bit better than the Touch, and is about the same as the LG Prada. The haptic feedback is definitely a nice feature, though it's nowhere near as good as the localized vibrations seen on the Motorola ROKR E8. In any case, the touch screen is worse than the iPhone's, but better than a Windows Mobile phone.

Samsung Instinct touch screen phone coming to Sprint
Added on 2008-04-01 10:27:00
by Alfredo Padilla
Sprint will be releasing a new touch screen device from Samsung dubbed the Instinct. The Phone will feature EVDO Rev A for fast download speeds, GPS and what is dubbed a "real Internet Experience". Also on board is a two megapixel camera and threaded SMS. The device will be available in June with no information about pricing available. Interestingly the Instinct will ship with two 1000 mAh batteries, which is either a very nice extra or portends a very poor battery life. We'll be back with more info on the phone and some photos when we got a hold of them.
Update: we were able to grab a photo of the Instinct for you courtesy of Gizmodo. Go Mr T! We also picked up some pics from Sprint that you can see after the jump, but we still love Mr T!

Palm Centro hits 1,000,000 units sold
Added on 2008-03-31 21:23:00
by Mark Brezinski
Congrats, Palm Centro, on your one-millionth unit sold. That's right: if you pool together the 10 countries the Centro is available in, one million of the little guys have found themselves loving homes. Like we said in our review of this scrappy little device, if you can offer what everyone else is offering, but do it for less money, you will sell one-million units. Given the insane number of cobwebs hanging from the Palm OS rafters, we're surprised the elderly interface had any fight left in it. It just goes to show that a zippy new case and a low price can do wonders for sales, even if the phone has a bad keyboard.

First Call: Samsung M520
Added on 2008-03-25 10:18:00
by Alfredo Padilla
The Samsung M520 is a slim, professional looking slider available exclusively from Sprint. Our first impressions of the device are that it's a simple, easy to use cell phone, but does have its drawbacks. Principal amongst these are the rather small screen. When you first look at the Samsung M520 you'll think that it has a much larger screen because of the large reflective area that takes up most of the front. Unfortunately only a small part of this area is actually used for the display.

Sprint to combine CDMA with WiMAX
Added on 2008-02-29 09:35:00
by Mark Brezinski
Sprint has decided not to dwell on their ridiculously bad 4th quarter, instead focusing on the future and its 4G technologies. New CEO, Dan Hesse, talked a bit about the next generation, mentioning possible devices that would be both CDMA and WiMAX compatible, operating on Sprint's XOHM service. This news would certainly help CDMA compete with GSM, which is used by just about every country. Not mentioned was the date this would launch, if this would be a soft launch or an actual launch, or how many devices would feature this capability.
We'll be interested to see if CDMA can actually combat the omniscient Goliath that is GSM.

Everyone says me too to unlimited plans
Added on 2008-02-19 17:13:00
by Alfredo Padilla
In what has to be the most gratuitous example of "me too!" it seems like almost everyone announced that they will be offering various flavors of unlimited calling plans today. Verizon's announcement (via Engadget) was expected, but now AT&T (via Phonescoop) and T-Mobile (via Gizmodo) have thrown their hats in the ring as well. All the plans start at $99 a month for unlimited calls with various additional charges for unlimited data and text messages. Of course they're all johnny-come-latelies since Sprint got there first and Helio's been there for awhile too. We can only say that we hope the real competition gets started now. How about unlimited everything for twenty bucks a month? We can only hope.
