Motorola Z9 Video Preview
Added on 2008-04-02 02:20:00
by Alfredo Padilla
Motorola's latest handset for AT&T does not, alas, stop their long streak of failed innovation. The Z9 resembles a slider version of the Razr2 (review) with some extras like GPS thrown in. Given all the problems Motorola has had lately we're not surprised to see that they haven't set CTIA on fire, perhaps next year. Video after the jump.

While there is no word on pricing or availability, this quad-band GSM/EDGE phone may just make an appearance at CTIA. To get all the dirt on this phone head over to the FCC site.

CES 2008: Conclusions
Added on 2008-01-14 08:01:00
by Mark Brezinski
So we're all back from CES, and we can definitively say it wasn't the best show for cell phones. We knew it wouldn't be CIAA, but the sheer dearth of anything interesting was a bit surprising. We made video previews for a few interesting handsets: Sony Ericcson's w760 and w350, Motorola's Z10 and ROKR E8, and Samsung's Serenata. We've written First Impression reviews on three of these: ROKR E8, Serenata, Z10. We'll be posting a First Impression review on the w760 soon as well.
Cell phones were certainly much bigger players at CES in the past. Why was there such a poor showing this year? Honestly, we think niche-oriented shows, such as CTIA or 3GSM, are the reason. With a huge show like CES that covers so many different fields of electronics, it's easy for smaller, more finesse-oriented gadgets to get lost in the shadows of the 150" plasma TVs and the giant trucks that are 65% speakers. CES seems to be more about flashy hardware than great software; it's hard for a tiny brick with a 2-3" screen to pull many eyes away from the grandeur of the rest of the show. We think the fear of being lost in the shuffle is causing cell phone manufacturers to stay away from general electronics shows, concentrating instead on niche shows like CTIA. When you only have other phones to compete against and all the press is there specifically for cell phones, your handset has a much better chance of getting noticed.
We'll be at the next CTIA, checking out all the phones that were too skittish to show up at CES.

Motorola announces ROKR E8 and Z10
Added on 2008-01-07 12:22:00
by Mark Brezinski
Motorola has announced two new handsets: the ROKR E8 and the Z10. The ROKR E8 is a candybar with an touch keypad. The E8 boasts a different sort of haptic feedback than the usual vibration pulse, and should feel like hitting an actual button. It will feature a 2-Megapixel camera, but Motorola doesn't have the best track record with quality photo. You shouldn't run into memory issues, however, as the 2GB on-board memory can be augmented with a MicroSD card. The Z10 is a sequel to the Z8, and is essentially the same handset barring a few upgrades. You'll be able to edit video with the phone, which is an incredibly rare feature on a mobile phone. The Z10 has a 3.2-Megapixel camera and also accepts MicroSD cards.

Motorola Denies Clock Features A Certain Part Of Male Anatomy
Added on 2007-10-19 05:18:00
by Tanya Palta
Remember the questionable silhouette (so to speak) that some sharp eyed individuals spotted on certain Motorola handsets? The whole world and its uncle had an opinion on what exactly it represented, but Motorola took the more predictable no comments route. However the company finally broke its silence and insist that it’s not what our dirty minds were thinking.
“The image that you see is actually the result of shading applied to the clock background graphic to give it more of a three-dimensional appearance, in line with the theme of the phone. The graphic is actually built as concentric circles stacked on top of each other, with a lighting filter applied to give it depth. Unfortunately, the result is something that has some readers questioning what they see, and Motorola apologizes for any perception of impropriety as it was certainly not our intent at all.”

Motorola! What kind of woman do you take us for?
Added on 2007-10-17 14:20:00
by Mark Brezinski
Who choses to have an analog clock display on their cell phone? No one, right? This is exactly how a phallic silhouette managed to repeatedly escape detection, and manage to appear in the background of several different Motorola models. Apparently you can find Motorola's dirty little secret just by activating the analog clock in the default theme/skin on a few phones, including the V9m and KRZR. There are additional rumors flying around about whether or not the image was intentional (employee prank/joke/revenge/etc.), but there's no real proof of that.
We tried to find it on our Motorola phones, but we were sadly unable to find the offending image for some reason. To be honest, while the pictures circulating around this internet of ours certainly resembles what everyone claims it does, it could very well just be a failed attempt at drawing glare or adding a 3D effect. If it is something so glamorous as an employee prank, we'll let you know as soon as we find out. At any rate, if your phone is so equipped, we're sure it'll be worth a few chuckles, and a great way to reassure yourself that no, no one really matures past second grade.
If you really must see the pictures, Boy Genius is hosting a good screen grab below.
