iPhone App Store Live
Added on 2008-07-10 06:02:00
by Alfredo Padilla
Although we're still waiting for the iPhone 2.0 software upgrade so we can actually install iPhone applications the iPhone app store has gone live with today's update to iTunes 7.7. The app store has around 500 applications, with many free ones, but the selection can only be called sparse when compared to the range of applications available for Windows Mobile or Palm. It did just launch, however, and we're sure that it will quickly be ramping up over the next few months. Screenshots after the break.

Mossberg, Pogue and Baig review the iPhone 3G
Added on 2008-07-08 21:03:00
by Alfredo Padilla
Well, the first reviews are out the door from the people you'd expect. Walt Mossberg, David Pogue and Edward Baig all have their reviews live several days before the release of the iPhone 3G this Friday. Major points;
- No Copy & Paste
- No MMS
- No Video recording
- No improved Bluetooth Stack
- Battery drains faster with 3G (duh!)
- 3G is 3-5 times faster than Edge
- Improved audio
- No info on the software store yet
We'll be standing in line with the rest of the masses, but check back for our live comparative review, we promise we'll be writing more words than all three of these guys put together.

by Alfredo Padilla
So now that AT&T has announced definitive pricing for the iPhone 3G we can take another look at what the new iPhone is going to cost you. Of course Apple is making a big deal about "Twice the speed, half the price", but the reality is a bit different. More after the jump.

Apple posts guided tour for iPhone 3G
Added on 2008-07-01 09:24:00
by Alfredo Padilla
Apple posted another of its helpful (annoying?) guided tours for the new iPhone 3G. Nothing's new here, but a couple of tidbits we thought were worth mentioning:
- Support for multiple calendars
- Search in contacts
- Support for zip files (perhaps only for currently supported file types)
- No copy and paste :(
Check it out to kill another twelve minutes before the iPhone 3G launch.

8am for iPhone 3G release
Added on 2008-07-01 09:03:00
by Alfredo Padilla
Looks like those rumors about an early morning for anyone who wants an iPhone 3G are correct. AT&T confirmed today that they will be opening their doors at 8:00 AM on July 11th to sell the iPhone 3G. We haven't heard anything about Apple stores but we'd be surprised if they don't follow suit. The increased pricing plans have also been confirmed, with the 450 minute entry level plan with unlimited data starting at $69.99, ten dollars more than the first gen iPhone's plan. Oh, and those of you who aren't eligible for an upgrade can expect to pay an extra $200 for the iPhone. The plans also don't include text messages, so you'll have to shell out extra for those. Start your campouts!

Talking iPhone: One step forward, two steps back
Added on 2008-06-10 09:17:00
by Alfredo Padilla
Now that we've put about a day between ourselves and the ridiculous hype surrounding any Steve Jobs keynote address we can take a step back and consider what was revealed at yesterday's World Wide Developer Conference. Our first impressions are: eh. The addition of 3G and GPS to the iPhone have long been expected, and frankly we were hoping for more. Still, an upgrade is an upgrade and the price cut certainly sweetens the pot. Of course what Apple giveth with one hand AT&T taketh with the other.

Apple announces new iPhone 3G
Added on 2008-06-09 13:41:00
by Alfredo Padilla
Today Apple took the wraps off their new iPhone with 3G support and GPS. The device will see a price drop with the 8GB version available for $199 and the 16GB version for $299. Sporting beveled edges, a plastic back, improved audio and a flush headphone jack. The signature feature, of course, is 3G support, with Steve Jobs demonstrating that page that took 59 seconds to load on the slower EDGE network took only 21 seconds via 3G. Apple also claims solid battery life, 300 hours of standbye, five hours of talk time (10 hours on EDGE), 5 to 6 hours of browsing, 7 hours of video and 24 hours of audio. We'll see how well these hold up when we get the phone into the labs.
What we didn't see that we had hoped for was an updated camera and bigger storage.

Today at WWDC Apple announced a new web based service called Mobile Me. Replacing their older .Mac service Mobile Me will be found at Me.com and will allow you to synchronize data across multiple devices including Mac and Windows computers as well as your iPhone. Synchronization will be supported for calendar, contact, files and photos.
It will also provide push email to your iPhone. On the Mac side synchronization will be supported with the built in applications, on the Windows side it will synchronize with Outlook. This is Apple's move to bring Exchange-like functionality to consumers. They've also built web-based applications that look much like their Mac desktop applications.
Mobile Me will cost $99 per year and will replace their existing .Mac service. It will include 20 GB of online storage.

Apple to allow subsidized iPhones?
Added on 2008-06-08 21:42:00
by Alfredo Padilla
A report out of the Financial Times once again brings up the idea that Apple will allow carriers to begin subsidizing the price of the iPhone (review) beginning with the new 3G version that should be released later this month and announced tomorrow. Apple had previously required carriers to sell the iPhone at full price and required carrier partners to share a portion of the monthly revenues from iPhone carriers. It may be that resistance from many carriers to such a model has led Apple to change their approach in an effort to ensure that the iPhone is sold in as many markets as possible.

AT&T's effort to roll out their 3G network as quickly as possible, possibly spurred by the imminent launch of the 3G iPhone, is one possible cause of a sharp spike in falling deaths from cell phone towers according to a Fortune Story. According to the story AT&T ordered their contracter to do refresher training after the first two of three deaths associated with the carrier. Three additional deaths, for a total of six, have occured in the past five weeks.

Accessorize Me: Radtech Procable iPhone headphone review
Added on 2008-05-22 10:11:00
by Alfredo Padilla
The last time I spoke to you about iPhone (review) headphones was to warn you about the V-Moda Vibe Duo headphones. After that failure I went looking for another solution, in the meantime I went through my fourth pair of Apple's iPhone headphones. I finally settled on Radtech's Procable headphones, which purported to provide noise isolation technology and a microphone and button that allows you to use the headphones just like Apple's headphones. All this at a pretty reasonable price of $24.95.

No Black iPhone Says AT&T
Added on 2008-05-13 04:57:00
by Tanya Palta
As previously reported by mobile blogs like Engadget, there is no Black iPhone on the horizon. AT&T in an official statement to the blog said:
“The reference to 'iPhone Black' was simply a temporary placeholder used over the weekend for a scheduled catalog update. It was meant to temporarily distinguish the various iPhone models-4GB, 8GB and 16GB-but was never reassigned. We're changing the site now."
The logic doesn'texactly make much sense honestly but maybe there is method is AT&T’s madness?
