HTC's Dash update, the Cavalier, heads through the FCC
Added on 2007-07-03 13:17:00
by Randall Bennett

Well well, Cavalier, we meet again.  Despite seeing an overseas release a few months back on Dopod, we're still pretty excited to see the device head our way.  If you don't remember the Cavalier, take what you like about the T-Mobile Dash, add in some 3G, a faster 400MHZ processor and add in WiFi luv and voila!  Still, just because we've seen it head through Uncle Sam's labs [PDF link!] , it doesn't guarantee a US release, but we'd speculate AT&T might want to continue its hot streak of acquiring sweet phone exclusives and potentially add it to the lineup.  After all, it needs at least some phone to take care of 3G since the iPhone can't handle it.

iPhone battery life 50% of Apple's estimate?
Added on 2007-07-01 23:06:00
by Randall Bennett

We're still running the iPhone through all the tests possible (and you thought the weekend was for sleep, pshaw) and have some pretty big results thus far: looks like the iPhone didn't get all the battery life Apple had estimated.  We'd been hearing people having battery life problems in an informal dialog, but now some of our test results show the iPhone gets almost half of Apple's eight hours of promised talk time per charge.  We're still working to verify the results and finish some of our other crazy tests, but we'll keep you tested as we keep going.  We've got more than one phone, so after we run our initial tests, we'll run them again and again with different phones.

iDead: MacWorld's iPhone D.O.A.
Added on 2007-06-29 21:50:00
by Brittany Braudo

A MacWorld writer believes he may have the world's first Dead on Arrival iPhone. Dan Moren waited in line and brought his phone home, only to find that it was unresponsive. He plugged it into the dock, briefly saw the Apple logo, and then the screen went dark, "seemingly forever."

He says all CPR attempts on his iPhone have failed, and Apple's troubleshooting has not fared any better. He hopes that the battery may recharge if he keeps the iPhone plugged in to the AC adapter overnight, but he expects he may hear that inevitable flatline anyways. Hold back the tears, Moren. We are all praying for you.

Update: Jim Dalrymple, also from MacWorld, was unable to activate his own iPhone, and is also considerably upset. Anti-MacWorld conspiracy, anyone?

Update 2: After spending a good amount of time contemplating life and finding peace with his dead iPhone, Moren has discovered numerous ways to utilize your new $600 paperweight, if you're one of the unlucky who's iPhone is iDead.
-Stare into the inky blackness of the dead iPhone screen
-Straighten that wobbly kitchen chair
-Bait to lure unsuspecting iPhone wanters down a dark alley and take their wallet
-A make-up mirror
-Conversation piece
-Blunt object to brain people with when the conversation turns to "Hey, is that a dead iPhone?"
-Make phone calls... to the dead

Moren has made a Genius Bar appointment for tomorrow. It will be the first test of how well Apple deals with dead iPhones. Stay tuned.

Preliminary reports of shortages?
Added on 2007-06-29 14:57:00
by Randall Bennett

We talked briefly with a man who seemed to be an AT&T employee (AT&T blue shirt, we're thinking manager?) and while he couldn't give us specifics until 6PM, we asked him why he was counting the number of people in line.  His response?  He wanted to be sure they had enough phones for everyone.  Fair enough, but then our next logical question?  "Do you have enough phones?"  His reply, "I can't tell you officially till six, but we should have barely enough for the people in line."

That would set the phones at this particular AT&T store at 30-40 phones.  We're not sure about everywhere in the world, but we're thinking shortages might be likely.  Anyone else have any similar experiences?

EDGE speeds improving since TDMA shutdown?
Added on 2007-06-29 12:28:00
by Randall Bennett

We've heard some reports around the web of AT&T's EDGE network delivering relatively blazing speeds, for EDGE at least.  Some of our friends at Engadget and Gizmodo report seeing speeds well over 200KBPS, which is an absolute shock.  Forum posters on the topic say the speed increase started with the shutdown of the former AT&T Wireless' TDMA networks (not to be confused with AT&T, or AT&T Mobility.)  Whatever the case, the masses waiting in line for the iPhone (which includes us) aren't complaining.

AT&T 8525 sees price drop
Added on 2007-06-29 11:02:00
by Randall Bennett

As we've been standing in line for over twelve hours now, we're pretty sick of talking about / hearing about / thinking about Apple's wonderPhone.  It's only six more hours and we'll all have them to play with.  Just in case you're not down for some mobile OSX love, one of our favorite Windows Mobile devices just saw a pretty significant drop in price, maybe due in part to the launch of the wonderPhone.  Head to AT&T (and step in front of the line waiters) and pick up an 8525 from HTC/AT&T for $299.  If the iPhone doesn't quite tickle your fancy, the 8525 might be a good place to start looking for a replacement.

Jobs: Every Apple employee gets a free iPhone
Added on 2007-06-28 14:56:00
by Randall Bennett

Steve Jobs was feeling in a generous mood this morning at an employee-only all-hands meeting.  He told all gathered employees who have been in the company longer than a year they'd score a free 8gb iPhone.  Free iPhones, but not free service.  (You gotta get your cash back through the subscriptions, right? We kid.)   He also breezed over the reasons for using EDGE instead of 3G, chiefly being battery and network deployment issues.

Jobs also said some non-phone news about a new iPod ala the iPhone (think iPhone sans communication features,) also some word that the new Macs will be off the charts, but you didn't really come here to hear about those things, did you?

iPhone launch deets from AT&T's perspective
Added on 2007-06-28 13:18:00
by Randall Bennett

The Boy Genius uncovered an Apple & AT&T training manual detailing the iPhone launch from AT&T's perspective.  The document details the AT&T sales strategy from walk in through activation.  Every AT&T employee will as you to perform a pre-paid credit check to ensure you can afford the phone.  If you fail, you've got two options: One, you could pony up $250 for a prepaid plan as a security deposit, or two you can apparently activate the iPhone as a GoPhone using PickYourPlan.  That means no contract, no deposit, and also no fee for canceling service.  Now, to figure out exactly how to make my credit awful in the next day or so.

Anyone looking for some eBay profiteering will be limited to two phones per person, but they can go pick up those phones till Midnight.  Once you pick up your two iPhones, Apple stores will have trainers available at the Genius Bar so you can figure out how to use your $500 combination of plastic and metal.

Apple store employees forced to surrender cameraphones
Added on 2007-06-28 08:35:00
by Randall Bennett

In case you're thinking about interviewing for a job just to get behind the velvet rope of the Apple store, think again.  One of our tipsters says when wrapping up some paperwork for her first day at one of the east coast Apple stores, the manager asked if she had a cell phone with a camera.  When she replied yes, the manager took the phone and placed it on a conference table with loads of other cameraphones, apparently with all the other Apple employees on-shift.  That'll show you, Apple employees, for trying to leak some iPhone shots.

iPhone plans get official
Added on 2007-06-26 07:55:00
by Randall Bennett

Apple unveiled one of the last big questions for potential iPhone purchasers: The plan.  For $60 to $100 per month, you net yourself a smorgasboard of AT&T plan features.  The $60 set includes 450 minutes, 5000 night and weekend minutes, rollover, Apple's "Visual voicemail," 200 text messages, unlimited data and unlimited mobile to mobile calling.  The $80 plan includes 900 minutes and unlimited night and weekends, and the $100 has 1350 minutes.  If you're rich enough to get a $500 phone, looks like you're going to be rich enough to afford a $60 - $100 phone plan. Oh, and for those of you keeping score on tipsters, looks yesterday's tipsters were just making stuff up.

iPhone madness: It's on in New York
Added on 2007-06-25 17:31:00
by Randall Bennett

It's no surprise to us that Apple heads would start lining up the day before the iPhone goes on sale, but in the most densely populated city in the US, there are bound to be one or two crazy folks who decided to start standing in line for the iPhone today.  Seriously, we're not joking.  The two dudes pictured on the right are in line 100+ hours before the multi-touch wonder graces any of our fingertips.  We're inclined to cite sheer craziness as the reason, but somehow the guys don't want to be left without an iPhone and figure 100+ of their arch rival fanboys will show up at 7PM, a full four days before the launch.

Hey, ya gotta be best at something.  We'll give these two guys the title of best "Apple Fanboy Line Waiters (of doom.)"  Way to be first.

Video of iPhone display at Apple store

We actually took a stroll out of the office today to see what all the hubub was about, headed down to the CambridgeSide Galleria and hit up the Apple store with our trusty video camera in tow.  It's no dramatic chimpmunk, but check out the video for three minutes of iPhone mania.

Server logs yield iPhone specs
Added on 2007-06-20 10:05:00
by Randall Bennett

The iPhone hype (and counter-hype) is getting to an almost unbearable level, but there is still interesting news coming out about the device. The developer of GasApp revealed some iPhone specs by combing through server logs looking for visits by non-standard devices. He did find an iPhone entry detailing some of the iPhone's specs.  The iPhone reported a resolution of 320 x 396, and as we reported earlier, doesn't support Flash.

More iPhone specs get out, and the anticipation builds, but the spec that really counts? 9.  That's how many days left till your grubby little hands can grace the glass exterior.

iPhone gets YouTube app
Added on 2007-06-20 08:54:00
by Randall Bennett

Looks like YouTube is indeed headed to the iPhone, as Apple officially confirmed YouTube's presence as the twelfth bundled application.  The player uses the support originally intended for Apple.TV (to our knowledge, anyway) using h.264 streaming support.  YouTube has converted about 10,000 videos over for today's launch of YouTube on the AppleTV, and YouTube says they're planning to continue to convert videos to h.264 till their entire library plays on the AppleTV and iPhone, which should be complete in the fall.

Check out Apple's demo video of YouTube on the iPhone.

Apple says iPhone gets 8 hours talk, 10 days standby
Added on 2007-06-18 08:15:00
by Randall Bennett

Worried that their "up to five hours" of talk time claim during January's iPhone reveal announcement wasn't enough, Apple put out a press release stating the iPhone would get eight hours of talk time, six hours of internet use, seven hours of video playback or 24 hours of audio playback plus ten days of standby time.  Apple also says that instead of plastic, the front of the iPhone will flaunt glass, in order to stop scratches and improve optical clarity.

That's great and all from the manufacturer, but instead of taking their word for it come back to our site on June 29th.  We'll have a real-life battery test going on from the second it gets fully charged in our labs till the second it dies.  That, and scads of other iPhone coverage coming at you in just 11 days.

Rumored iPhone launch details
Added on 2007-06-15 13:48:00
by Randall Bennett

Just in case you've been waiting with baited breath like we have for the iPhone launch plan, apparently Boy Genius once again grabbed the early word.  His typically reliable sources are saying the store will be open normally, then close at 4:30pm.  During the 4:30 to 6:00 window, the phones should be delivered as well as displays set out during that time.  His sources also report the stores should stay open as late as midnight to account for the rush.

We'll see more when it happens on June 29th, and trust us, we'll be first in line to get our hands on the phone.

First unconfirmed iPhone sighting?
Added on 2007-06-14 11:27:00
by Randall Bennett

Sure, the dude is wearing white headphones, but is that truly an iPhone in his hands?  Flickr user Chasingfun popped off this shot on his Treo 755p, and while we can't be sure, the zoomed in photo sure looks like an iPhone (click "Read More" to read it.)  Now, Apple fanboys the world 'round will head to San Francisco to ride random CalTrains in hopes of spotting the legendary device.

Breathe fanboys, you've only got a little over two weeks left.
